Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides us with an accurate historical view of the Sinclair family alongside Scottish history It explores the journey of the Sinclairs from their Normandy routes to Scotland. Sinclair is one of the oldest surnames in Europe and its ancestry goes back to William the Conqueror. The book identifies the origin and formation of the Sinclair Clan, shows the crest and tartans and their Earldoms and Castles. From these it guides us to places of interest today. The Sinclairs were well respected and throughout the centuries, won or were awarded property and lands. They were greatly involved in the battles of the Wars of Independence and are first mentioned in the invasion of England with William the Conqueror. This book goes on to describe in detail, all the battles looking at the first Battle of Dunbar in 1296 effectively ending in an English victory to the first battle for Independence, the Battle of Roslin. It goes on encountering the Sinclairs in the likes of the Battles of Bannochburn and Culloden to the ill fated Invasion of England in 1648 with King Charles II. It then takes us on, ending the journey at the Union of Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707.

Book Synopsis The Westford Knight and Henry Sinclair by : David Goudsward
Download or read book The Westford Knight and Henry Sinclair written by David Goudsward and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Westford Knight is a mysterious, controversial stone carving in Massachusetts. Some believe it is an effigy of a 14th century knight, evidence of an early European visit to the New World by Henry Sinclair, the Earl of Orkney and Lord of Roslin. In 1954, an archaeologist encountered the carving, long known to locals and ascribed a variety of origin stories, and proposed it to be a remnant of the Sinclair expedition. The story of the Westford Knight is a mix of history, archaeology, sociology, and Knights Templar lore. This work unravels the threads of the Knight's history, separating fact from fantasy. This revised edition includes a new foreword and four new chapters which add context to the myth-building that has surrounded the Westford Knight and artifacts like it.

Book excerpt: The history of humankind is intimately tied to the history of agriculture: powerful societies rose, persisted and waned in parallel with their food supply systems. Describing what crops were grown, the constraints on their production and the foods that were obtained, this book traces the impact of cropping and food preparation in ten societies that were among the most powerful and influential in history, detailing how technology varied and developed as it related directly to agriculture and food production. The book initially considers growing and eating grains beginning with the transition from hunter-gatherers to agrarian communities. Five early agricultural societies are examined, followed by the advancement of technology from the ancient Greeks and Romans to the present. It concludes by addressing the implications for the future of agriculture and food supply as grain production moves towards biofuels. A compelling text for all those interested in the history of society and --
