Do you wish there was a magazine that was all about nostalgia? If so, Popular Retro is exactly what you’ve been looking for; it’s a quarterly periodical designed for people who miss the classic TV shows, pine for the computer games of their youth, and marvel at the curios of days gone by - from flares and drainpipes to BMX bikes. Each issue covers everything from music and films to gaming, popular culture, fashion and much more, with in-depth articles serving up a memorable slice of the things that you still love… even if you’d forgotten about them until now! In this first issue, we review forty years of Sir Clive Sinclair’s ground-breaking ZX81 computer, check out the best Ghostbusters toys (from the 1980s, obviously) and look back at everyone’s favourite helicopter-based TV show, Airwolf. You’ll also find a monster retrospective feature deep-diving into the Philips CD-i console and its games, reviews of some classic horror films (on VHS) and even has a pull-out poster for your bedroom wall in the greatest traditions of the magazines from your childhood. At Popular Retro, old is ALWAYS still fashionable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes three phenomena in digital media. Firstly, it concerns the 8-bit personal computer ZX Spectrum produced by the British company Sinclair Research since 1982. As a publication about a specific platform, it falls into the mainstream category of platform studies and it pays special attention to how the computer was used for creative purposes. Secondly, the story about the platform will also be presented from the perspective of the community that flocked around it. Therefore, it is mainly a book about people who identify with the ZX Spectrum. We do not describe all the users of the platform here (players, people using apps), rather we adopt the demoscene criterion (which we explain below). And the last and third phenomenon discussed in our book deals with the decentering of digital media or discovering digital phenomena from beyond the hegemonic center. Therefore, even though the ZX Spectrum was created in Great Britain the use of the computer in the country of its birth will not interest us. Thanks to its creator, Sir Clive Sinclair, the ZX Spectrum was designed as a computer primarily for educational purposes. As it often happens, the work detached itself from its creator and took on a life of its own. In our narrative, we will focus on the acquisition (cloning) and creative use of the computer in Eastern and Central Europe.

Book excerpt: From the age of five, when he helped his deaf father negotiate advertising contracts, Richard Desmond has always had an eye for business. In The Real Deal he offers a no-holds-barred account of an extraordinary career that has taken him from cloakroom attendant at a north London club to billionaire media owner. En route he tells of his early life as a rock and roll drummer, his first steps in the world of magazine publishing as a purveyor of leisure and top-shelf titles, and finally, after decades of paying his dues building smaller brands, his arrival in the big league with the launch of OK! magazine and the acquisition of Express Newspapers, his purchase and sale of Channel 5, and his £80 million investment in the Health Lottery, combining business innovation with help for good causes. Along the way, he imparts many of the secrets of his astounding success, as well as giving his forthright opinion (and he always has one) on such diverse subjects as politicians, religion, and the similarities between being a rock and roll drummer and running a business – as well as his views on a cast of characters ranging from Alan Sugar to Victoria Beckham and from Simon Cowell to Jennifer Aniston. Often controversial, frequently revelatory, always entertaining, The Real Deal is the brilliantly frank account of a life spent at the sharp end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ZX Spectrum was created as a computer for the masses rather than the classes. A follow-up to the hugely successful Sinclair ZX81, the Speccy - as it affectionately became known - was advertised as the first colour computer that could be bought for under £100. Thanks to its affordable price, wide range of software, easy to learn BASIC language and simple set-up, the Spectrum went on to become the best-selling computer in the UK and revolutionised the country's games industry. This book takes you through the history of the much-loved platform, sampling a varied cross-section of the many thousands of games from the very first releases to modern retro classics and even previously unreleased prototypes. Each entry features a screenshot, review and publishing information, along with the author's personal rating for the title. With ten entries for each letter of the alphabet, this is not supposed to be a list of the best or the worst games; neither is it a complete guide to all that's available. It is simply a meandering journey through well over thirty years of home computing history, designed to interest both the dedicated fan and the casual reader. A Compendium of ZX Spectrum Games is a celebration of Sir Clive's wonder machine, filled with nostalgic memories, new opinions, interesting stories and so much more!

Book excerpt: Gaming: it’s the greatest British invasion of them all. Lara Croft is an international icon and the British-born Grand Theft Auto and its spin-offs have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. The UK’s games industry is now bigger than either its cinema or its music. Yet the medium’s birth in Thatcher’s Britain was almost accidental. While politicians championed computers like the BBC Micro and the ZX Spectrum as engines of learning, it was left to a grassroots culture of amateur programmers to unlock their true potential. And from bedrooms and classrooms across the country, a brilliant profusion of innovative and idiosyncratic games soon emerged – propelling their young creators to fame, riches and, eventually, a place on the world stage. This is the story of those teenage coders – tracing their journey from the first home computers to the age of the smartphone. A mix of oddball characters, programming miracles and moral panics, Grand Thieves & Tomb Raiders reveals how the unique history of British computing led to some of the greatest games of all time.
