Book excerpt: Memoir of a South Bronx Childhood The Silk Purse, a memoir set in the l950s tells of Raquels ingenuity, courage, and inner strength as she struggles to keep her dreams alive while living under the close supervision of at least a dozen pairs of vigilant loving eyes. Raquels early childhood was filled with strict rules, traditional expectations, and myriad household duties imposed by her Puerto Rican Cuban extended family. From age 3-18, she lived under the watchful gaze of her parents, maternal grandparents, a great aunt, her half-sister, their majestic collie Sabu, various tenants, and many of the residents of the South Bronx, New York, apartment building where they all lived. Some episodes are touching examples of growing up; others are painful and poignant passages in the life of this young girl and her family. The story themes are about friendship, loyalty, childhood pranks, her first job, first love, first separation and much more. In spite of the cramped quarters located in the midst of a neighborhood that is showing signs of devastation, decay, and danger the apartment and building were a sanctuary for Raquel and her family. Raquel Ortiz writes with such humor and vivid description, I felt I was eating a juicy mango too! The coming of age stories of this young Latina are written with simplicity, humility and such dulzura you cant help but journey with the author to bitter sweet places in your own heart. -Linda Soto-Harmon, First Book, (A national childrens literary organization) Buy Your Copy Now!! Download or read book Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education written by Mack C. Shelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.

Book Synopsis My Silk Purse and Yours by : George Garrett
Download or read book My Silk Purse and Yours written by George Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formula critics - like the formula fiction they consider - can't tell a silk purse from a sow's ear. George Garrett can, and he isn't afraid to say so, even when his judgments aren't fashionable. My Silk Purse and Yours shows Garrett at his combative best, as he takes on everything from New York's literary "star" system to the work of Kurt Vonnegut and John Barth. "I may be wrong", writes Garrett, "but you cannot convince me that I do not read more novels and story collections than the entire professional staffs of the New York Times (Sunday and daily) and the Washington Post (ditto) put together". The essays and reviews collected here should convince even the most skeptical reader of Garrett's claim. Whether he is pondering the problems and paradoxes of literary biography taking apart the capriciousness of the publishing industry, or divulging the source of "the best Bloody Mary in England", Garrett's voice is the voice of one who knows. Garrett rarely strays from the firm grounding of his own experience as a reader. Eschewing literary "stars", who too frequently eclipse lesser-known but often more talented artists, Garrett explores such underappreciated writers as Mary Johnston, Madison Smartt Bell, and Reynolds Price. He champions writers who tackle subjects that will never make them popular. Of Shelby Foote's The Civil War he writes, "Even assuming the good fortune of living to complete his marathon enterprise and doing it tolerably well, the odds were strong, if not overwhelming, that in a time of instant attention and instant oblivion, (Foote) would find himself and his work cheerfully forgotten". Garrett writes of the Elizabethans, "Their words are not only their greatest gift tous, but they are also the only true map we have to lead us to their world and safely back to our own". In My Silk Purse and Yours Garrett's explorations of American literary art always lead him back to his starting point. Opinionated, daring, and always enlightening, My Silk Purse and Yours is a shrewd and entertaining celebration of the lost art of reading and the troubled art of writing.
Download or read book The Mermaid's Purse written by Ted Hughes and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mermaid's Purse, Ted Hughes explores the ocean. From starfish and seagulls to mermaids and monsters, 28 poems capture the beauty, drama, and mystery of the sea and the seashore. Here is the ghostly cormorant: "Drowned fishermen come back/As famished cormorants/With bare and freezing webby toes/Instead of boots and pants." The strange and comical flounder: "The flounder sees/Through crooked eyes./Through crooked lips/The flounder cries." And the mermaid herself: "Call her a fish, /Call her a girl./Call her the pearl/Of an oyster fresh/On its pearly dish." By turns lyrical, whimsical, and robust, The Mermaid's Purse showcases the distinctive voice and appreciation of the natural world that made Ted Hughes among the most respected of late-20th-century poets. Made doubly accessible by Flora McDonnell's distinctive black-and-white art, this sea-themed collection will delight children and be welcomed by educators.

Book Synopsis The First Book of Fashion by : Ulinka Rublack
Download or read book The First Book of Fashion written by Ulinka Rublack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating book reproduces arguably the most extraordinary primary source documents in fashion history. Providing a revealing window onto the Renaissance, they chronicle how style-conscious accountant Matthäus Schwarz and his son Veit Konrad experienced life through clothes, and climbed the social ladder through fastidious management of self-image. These bourgeois dandies' agenda resonates as powerfully today as it did in the sixteenth century: one has to dress to impress, and dress to impress they did. The Schwarzes recorded their sartorial triumphs as well as failures in life in a series of portraits by illuminists over 60 years, which have been comprehensively reproduced in full color for the first time. These exquisite illustrations are accompanied by the Schwarzes' fashion-focussed yet at times deeply personal captions, which render the pair the world's first fashion bloggers and pioneers of everyday portraiture. The First Book of Fashion demonstrates how dress – seemingly both ephemeral and trivial – is a potent tool in the right hands. Beyond this, it colorfully recaptures the experience of Renaissance life and reveals the importance of clothing to the aesthetics and every day culture of the period. Historians Ulinka Rublack's and Maria Hayward's insightful commentaries create an unparalleled portrait of sixteenth-century dress that is both strikingly modern and thorough in its description of a true Renaissance fashionista's wardrobe. This first English translation also includes a bespoke pattern by TONY award-winning costume designer and dress historian Jenny Tiramani, from which readers can recreate one of Schwarz's most elaborate and politically significant outfits.
