Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Black St. Domingo Legion Saved the Patriot Army in the Siege of Savannah, 1779 Take thy banner may it wave Proudly o'er the good and brave; Take thy banner and if e'er Thou shoulds't press the soldier's bier And the muflled drum shall beat To the tread of mournful feet, Then the crimson flag shall be Martial cloak and shroud for thee. The warrior took that banner proud. And it was his martial cloak and shroud rect impressions. The attack upon Savannah was well-planned and thoroughly well considered; and it failed only because the works were so ably defended, chiefly by British regulars, under brave and skillful officers. In a remote way, which it is the purpose of this pa per to trace, that sanguinary struggle haa a wider bearing upon the progress of liberty in the Western World than any other one battle fought during the Revolution. But first let us listen to the story of the battle itself. Colonel Campbell with a force of three thousand men, captured Savannah in December 1778; and in the January followmg, General Prevost ar rived, and by March had established a sort of civil government in Georgia, Savannah being the capital. In April, the American gen eral, Lincoln, feeble 111 more senses than one, perhaps, began a move' ment against Savannah by way of Augusta; but Prevost, aware of his purpose, crossed into South Carolina and attempted an attack up on Charleston. Finding the city too well defended, he contented. Himself with ravaging the plantations over a wide extent of adjacent country, and returned to Savannah laden with rich spoils, among which were included three thousand slaves, of whose labor he made good use later. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Savannah in December, 1864, and the Confederate Operations in Georgia and the Third Military District of South Carolina During General Sherman's March From Atlanta to the Sea To perpetuate the Confederate memories connected with the march of General Sherman from Atlanta to Savannah is the design of the following pages. To be guided in all that he relates by the genuine circumstances of the action has been the author's care. This sad chapter in the history of Georgia has been written only by those who made light of her afflictions, laughed at her calamities, gloated over her losses, and lauded her spoilers. A predatory expedition, inaugurated with full knowledge of her weakness, conceived in a spirit of wanton destruction, conducted in violation of the rules of civilized warfare, and compassed in the face of feeble resistance, has been magnified into a grand military achievement worthy of all admiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege and Evacuation of Savannah, Georgia, in December 1864: An Address Delivered Before the Confederate Survivors' Association, in Augusta, Georgia, on the Occasion of Its Twelfth Annual Reunion on Memorial Day, April 26th, 1890 By the necrological record of each recurring year are we reminded, my Comrades, that the mortality among those who were actively engaged in the military and civil service of the Confederacy is augmenting in a rapidly increasing ratio. We had scarcely departed from this Hall, a twelve month ago, when we were apprised of the death near Paris, France, in absolute retirement and at a very advanced age, of the Hon. A. Dudley Mann who, during the war, was entrusted with an important diplomatic mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True to the Old Flag: A Tale of the American War of Independence You have probably been accustomed to regard the war between England and her Colonies in America as one in which we were not only beaten but to some extent humiliated. Owing to the war having been an unsuccessful one for our arms, British writers have avoided the subject, and it has been left for American historians to describe. These, writing for their own countrymen, and drawing for their facts upon gazettes, letters, and other documents emanating from one side only, have naturally, and no doubt insensibly, given a very strong colour to their own views of the events, and English writers have been too much inclined to accept their account implicitly. There is, however, another and very different side to the story, and this I have endeavoured to show you. The whole of the facts and details connected with the war can be relied upon as accurate. They are drawn from the valuable account of the struggle written by Major Stedman, who served under Howe, Clinton, and Cornwallis, and from other authentic contemporary sources.
