Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Port Arthur: Records of an Eye-Witness The suddenness and success of the torpedo attack on the Russian fleet anchored in reck less security in the outer roadstead, which Opened the war, marked for Russia the begin ning of irretrievable disaster, and was the first blow struck for the honour of Japan; and ever afterwards, when they met, the flag of Russia went down before the banner of Japan, on land and on the sea. Russians heard the dismal tale of that first encounter on the Yalu with rankling bitterness born of defeat at the hands of a despised foe, and they little thought that because a Russian army had been forced to retreat, it had been thoroughly beaten by the Skill and courage of Japanese troops; for they had a dream of military supre macy woven around vast armies that were to drive the insolent foe into the seas, and the adverse issue of that first engagement could not dispel this dream. But afield, the effect of this first overthrow of Russian arms was most disastrous in its consequences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Port Arthur, the Siege and Capitulation These objections, which apply so forcibly to an attempt to write a history of the campaign in Man churia, only in a small measure exist when an eye witness essays to write the story of the Siege of Port Arthur. The work of the artillery and engineers, which played such an important part in the siege, could be easily watched; but beyond that, there was no opportunity for a display of grand strategy or the high art of war before the Russian stronghold. Both were limited to the placing of thousands of men in as close proximity as possible to the enemy's works, and at periodical intervals calling upon them to attack. Book Synopsis A Secret Agent in Port Arthur (Classic Reprint) by : Wirt Gerrare
Download or read book A Secret Agent in Port Arthur (Classic Reprint) written by Wirt Gerrare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Secret Agent in Port Arthur No one who has seen anything of the fighting between the Russians and the Japanese needs to make any apology when presenting to the public a truthful account of any events of which he was an eye-witness. Very little was actually seen by any newspaper correspondent, and every history of the war, and even of each campaign, must depend for many particulars upon official reports, with which the public are familiar. I do not profess to have attempted to compile anything like a detailed story of the siege. Instead, I have preferred to give merely my own experiences in Port Arthur and elsewhere in Manchuria and the Far East; to describe what I saw, to repeat something of what was told to me, to say what I thought of such happenings as interested me, and to write of the people whom I met when in quest of information. Some of the things I have set down may throw sidelights upon certain phases of the war, and if what I have written induces readers to think for themselves what ought to be the policy in the Far East of Great Britain and the United States, then my object will have been attained. Book Synopsis From Ally to Enemy by : Philip Towle
Download or read book From Ally to Enemy written by Philip Towle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, closely researched by Philip Towle over the past thirty years, is principally concerned with the military relations between Britain and Japan during the first half of the twentieth century and the ambivalence, misunderstandings and misconceptions that informed their relationship, described by the author as ‘an epic tragedy’. Following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902, Japan was held up as a model in Britain and Britain in Japan. But within a generation, the British came to see Japan as the first country to challenge the League of Nations and to begin a new age of imperialism. Conversely, the Japanese armed forces saw Britain as the greatest obstacle to Japanese ambitions in China and elsewhere. In 1936, Lieutenant Commander Tota Ishimaru’s book Japan Must Fight Britain was printed in Britain, its significance ignored at many levels, and five years later the two countries were at war. ‘The feelings stirred up by that conflict,’ notes Towle, ‘still have resonance today.’ From Ally to Enemy brings together a most important body of research that is long overdue in book form and will be widely welcomed by historians and researchers of the period, as well as those seeking more detailed analysis of specific aspects of the pre-war Anglo-Japanese military relationship.

Book Synopsis Depictions and Images of War in Edwardian Newspapers, 1899-1914 by : G. Wilkinson
Download or read book Depictions and Images of War in Edwardian Newspapers, 1899-1914 written by G. Wilkinson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-12-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a detailed examination of newspaper coverage from 1899-1914, this book seeks to understand the vicarious experience of warfare held by Edwardians at the outset of the First World War. The attitudes towards and perceptions of war held by those who participated in it or encouraged others to do so, are crucial to our understanding of the origins of the First World War. Taking into account media history, cultural studies and military history, Wilkinson argues that the press depicted war as distant and safe; beneficial and desirable and even as some kind of sport or game. We are cautioned to avoid the same misconceptions of war in our own contemporary discussions of armed conflict.
Book Synopsis The Other Great Game by : Sheila Miyoshi Jager
Download or read book The Other Great Game written by Sheila Miyoshi Jager and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatic new telling of the dawn of modern East Asia, placing Korea at the center of a transformed world order wrought by imperial greed and devastating wars. In the nineteenth century, Russia participated in two “great games”: one, well known, pitted the tsar’s empire against Britain in Central Asia. The other, hitherto unrecognized but no less significant, saw Russia, China, and Japan vying for domination of the Korean Peninsula. In this eye-opening account, brought to life in lucid narrative prose, Sheila Miyoshi Jager argues that the contest over Korea, driven both by Korean domestic disputes and by great-power rivalry, set the course for the future of East Asia and the larger global order. When Russia’s eastward expansion brought it to the Korean border, an impoverished but strategically located nation was wrested from centuries of isolation. Korea became a prize of two major imperial conflicts: the Sino-Japanese War at the close of the nineteenth century and the Russo-Japanese War at the beginning of the twentieth. Japan’s victories in the battle for Korea not only earned the Meiji regime its yearned-for colony but also dislodged Imperial China from centuries of regional supremacy. And the fate of the declining tsarist empire was sealed by its surprising military defeat, even as the United States and Britain sized up the new Japanese challenger. A vivid story of two geopolitical earthquakes sharing Korea as their epicenter, The Other Great Game rewrites the script of twentieth-century rivalry in the Pacific and enriches our understanding of contemporary global affairs, from the origins of Korea’s bifurcated identity—a legacy of internal politics amid the imperial squabble—to China’s irredentist territorial ambitions and Russia’s nostalgic dreams of recovering great-power status.
Book Synopsis The Russo-Japanese War in Global Perspective by : John Steinberg
Download or read book The Russo-Japanese War in Global Perspective written by John Steinberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Volume one, Volume two of The Russo-Japanese War in Global Perspective examines the Russo-Japanese War in its military, diplomatic, social, political, and cultural context. In this volume East Asian contributors focus on the Asian side of the war to flesh out the assertion that the Russo-Japanese War was, in fact, World War Zero, the first global confl ict of the 20th century. The contributors demonstrate that the Russo-Japanese War, largely forgotten in the aftermath of World War I, actually was a precursor to the catastrophe that engulfed the world less than a decade after the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth. This study also helps us better understand Japan as it emerged at the beginning of its fateful 20th century.
