Book excerpt: As a rare account by a woman and a Loyalist during the French and Patriot attack on British forces at Newport in September 1778, Mrs. Almy's account provides valuable insights into a civilian woman's reactions to the war and to the situation in Newport. Among many other things, she graphically describes her attempts to protect her children as the French naval squadron under the Comte d'Estaing fought its way in and out of Narragansett Bay during the Battle of Rhode Island.

Book excerpt: Requests Whipple's opinion on the best course of action regarding the siege of Newport now that The Count De Estaing...abandoned us in the present Enterprise and opened the Harbour for...Reinforcements. Believes the British have only 6,000 men, while the American forces number 8,174. Rank & File exclusive of 628...Artillery Men. Asks Whipple whether he thinks it best to continue the siege without French naval support and risk the British reinforcing their position by sea, or to attack immediately with what seems a superior force, or to withdraw at once. Desires that Whipple's reply explain the reason for his choice and how best to carry it out. General Sullivan posed this question to a number of officers. GLC03232 is a reply by John Crane to a letter of Sullivan's that must have been almost identical to this one. The French and Americans had planed to mount a joint assault on the British at Newport. When many of the French ships were damaged in a storm their commander Vice Admiral d'Estaing was forced to move his fleet to Boston for repairs, taking his 4,000 French troops with him. Sullivan was furious at d'Estaing, and was forced to quickly abandon the siege.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed account of Britain’s Siege of Charleston is “a welcome addition to the history of South Carolina and of the American Revolution” (Journal of Military History). In 1779 Sir Henry Clinton and more than eight thousand British troops left the waters of New York, seeking to capture the colonies’ most important southern port, Charleston, South Carolina. Clinton and his officers believed that victory in Charleston would change both the seat of the war and its character. In this comprehensive study of the 1780 siege and surrender of Charleston, Carl P. Borick offers a full examination of the strategic and tactical elements of Clinton’s operations. Drawing on an impressive array of primary and secondary sources, Borick contends that the British effort against Charleston was one of the most critical campaigns of the war. He examines the shift in British strategy, the efforts of their army and navy, and the difficulties the patriots faced as they defended the city. He also explores the roles of key figures in the campaign, including Benjamin Lincoln, William Moultrie, and Lord Charles Cornwallis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the beliefs of the Branch Davidians? This is the first full scholarly account of their history. Kenneth G. C. Newport argues that, far from being an act of unfathomable religious insanity, the calamitous fire at Waco in 1993 was the culmination of a long theological and historical tradition that goes back many decades. The Branch Davidians under David Koresh were an eschatologically confident community that had long expected that the American government, whom they identified as the Lamb-like Beast of the book of Revelation, would one day arrive to seek to destroy God's remnant people. The end result, the fire, must be seen in this context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were the Hessians? Where did they come from? Were all Hessians truly Hessians? Were they mercenaries or auxiliary troops of the British? This well-researched historical narrative answers these questions and more as it vividly portrays the events of the Rhode Island campaign, which lasted from December 8, 1776 to October 25, 1779. Information gleaned from source diaries and unit journals, originally recorded in German, provide a wealth of insight into the daily life of the German soldiers who were committed to the Rhode Island campaign. In light of modern travel and technology, it is difficult to imagine the perilous two-month journey across the Atlantic to America that was just the beginning of the hardships, dangers, and fears to be experienced by these eighteenth-century German soldiers. The 1776 occupation of Newport, troop movements, raids and incursions, the Treaty of Paris, the 1778 siege of Newport, the Battle of Rhode Island, and much more are examined in detail. A bibliography and an index add to the value of this work.
