This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS book contains 20 Czech and Slovak folk and fairy tales translated and retold in English by Parker Fillmore, with excellent illustrations and decorations by Jan Matulka. Drawn from original Slavic sources, and chosen for their variety of subject and range of interest with tales like: The Twelve Months, Zlatovlaska The Golden-Haired, The Shepherd's Nosegay, Smolicheck, The Nickerman's Wife, Batcha And The Dragon, Vitazko The Victorious and many more. Unlike stories from the Grimm brothers, here are fairy tales conceived with all the gorgeousness of the Slavic imagination; charming little nursery tales that might be told in nurseries the world over; folk tales illustrative of the wit of a canny people; and rollicking devil tales as surprising to the Anglo-Saxon imagination as they are entertaining. They are not in any sense academic translations, but vivid renditions by a man who, besides being a student of folklore, was an accomplished story-teller in his own right. The stories are further embellished by Jan Matulka’s exquisite illustrations which capture the essence of the region’s culture. Added to this Matulka commences each story with a vignette which have a distinct Picasso-esque style to them. So, get yourself a warm drink, snuggle in to a comfy chair and sit back and enjoy folklore and tales from the Heart of Europe.

Book excerpt: Herein you will find 9 Illustrated stories from “Golden Lands” compiled by May Wentworth. But why “Golden Lands”? Well, an introductory poem tells us why – There are orange groves and lime trees green That glint in the sunlight’s glowing sheen, There are deserts yellow with priceless sand, All these you will find in the Golden Land. Well, how else would you describe the lands of Fairydom? In the Preface of this exquisite book, Wentworth addresses all children everywhere – “In the pleasant Christmas-time I greet the children everywhere. To some I shall not be a stranger, for we have met before, not face to face, but in the pages of the last years little book. In the sunny days of childhood, a year is so long a time, that when the summer and winter have passed it seems like an age gone by; yet as again I bring my Christmas offering, I hope to be remembered and welcomed as the friend who loves the children well. They are the true critics, generous and fearless. For their warm hearts and keen appreciation, I write these stories of the Golden Clime. May the joy and blessedness of the holy Christmas rest upon them, and follow them through all the sunshine and rain of the coming year.” The stories in this volume are: The Little Lace-Maker Golden Snow Gracia And Catrina The Dancing Sunbeam The Young Gold-Seeker The Wishing Cap Crimson Tuft Snowdrop And Rosebud Lazarus And Bummer ============= TAGS: Folklore, fairy, tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime stories, Little Lace-Maker, Golden Snow, Gracia And Catrina, Dancing Sunbeam, Young Gold-Seeker, Wishing Cap, Crimson Tuft, Snowdrop And Rosebud, Lazarus And Bummer, orange groves, lime trees, green, glint of sunlight, glowing sheen, deserts, yellow sand, Golden Lands

This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following 38 Finnish children’s stories cover almost all of the songs and runes contained in the Kalevala, the epic of the Finnish people in a simpler, story form. These stories will lead English speaking children into an hitherto unexplored region of the fairy world, for the folklore of Finland is the least known in the West. In these 38 stories T. M. Crawford's metrical translation of the Kalevala has been closely followed. As an introduction the first story in the volume is "Father Mikko" who has been chosen as the story-teller. Thereafter you will find stories like “Illmarinen Forges the Sampo”, a classic Finnish tale, an illustration of which has been selected for the cover. Young readers will also find the stories of “The Isle of Refuge”, “Wainamoinen And Youkahainen”, “Aino's Fate”, “Wainamoinen's Search For Aino”, “The Rainbow-Maiden”, “Ilmarinen's Bride Of Gold”and many more. While some of the characters' names will, at first, be unfamiliar, but by the end of the book they will be as familiar as friends. If this volume may in any degree awake some interest in the Finnish people, the storyteller would be amply satisfied, for his objective will have been attained.

Book excerpt: This collection of 18 Romanian folk and fairy tales contains translations of tales from Romanian which, however, comprise but a small portion of the inexhaustible treasure that exists in the nation. While the originals are scattered throughout Romanian literature this volume is an excellent companion to “Roumanian Fairy Tales and Legends” ISBN: 978-8-827544-00-6 which contains a further 15 children’s tales from Romania. Given Romania’s long and diverse cultural history, it is no surprise that the country has such a rich heritage of folk tales, fairy tales, and legends. It is also fortunate that so many of these stories survived the country’s turbulent history and were passed down throughout the ages to countless Romanian children and are now retold here. The exquisite stories in this volume are: Stan Bolovan The Wonderful Bird The Twins With the Golden Star. Youth Without Age and Life Without Death The Little Purse with two Half-pennies Mogarzea and His Son Cunning Ileane The Princess and the Fisherman Little Wild-Rose The Voice of Death The Old Woman and the Old Man The Pea Emperor The Morning Star and The Evening Star The Two Step-Sisters The Poor Boy Mother's Darling Jack Tellerchen The Fairy Aurora In approximately 82 BC, the rule of the Dacian kings was replaced by the Romans, who, in turn, were forced out by the Goths, layer supplanted by the Huns a;; by the 4th C. BC. After this, a sequence of nomadic rulers, including the Gepids, the Avars, the Bulgars, the Pechenegs, and the Cumans, ruled the area. By the Middle Ages, Romanians lived in three distinct principalities: Wallachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania, which were later ruled by the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. In 1859, Moldavia and Wallachia united under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, but it was not until the end of WWI, in 1918, that Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania proclaimed unions with the Kingdom of Romania and the modern state of Romania was born. 10% of the publisher’s profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the Relief Fund for Romania. =============== TAGS: Romanian, Roumanian, Folklore, Fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, traditions, Stan Bolovan, Wonderful Bird, Twins, Golden Star, Youth Without Age, Life Without Death, Little Purse, two Half-pennies, Mogarzea, Son, Cunning Ileane, Princess, Fisherman, Little Wild-Rose, Voice, Death, Old Woman, Old Man, Pea Emperor, Morning Star, Evening Star, Two, Step-Sisters, Poor Boy, Mother, Darling, Jack, Tellerchen, Fairy, Aurora

In this volume you will find stories like “The Story Of Unlucky Daniel”, “The Vampire And St Michael”, “The Tsar And The Angel”, “The Story Of Ivan And The Daughter Of The Sun”, “The Straw Ox”, “The Golden Slipper”, “The Iron Wolf”, “The Story of the Wind” and many more, most not heard in the west for many a year. This volume of stories has been selected from a Slavonic dialect extraordinarily rich in folk-tales. The original language was Ruthenian, the language of the Ukrainian Steppe, and of the Cossacks. This was the first translation ever made from Ruthenian into English. Until Ukrainian independence the language was rigorously repressed by the Soviet Government, and has since been a foundation from which modern Ukrainian has been developed. It possesses a noble literature, numerous folk-songs and a copious collection of justly admired folk-tales, many of them of great antiquity, which are regarded, both in Russia and Poland, as quite unique of their kind. Because of this, these stories have a distinctly Slavic flavour for the Cossacks are a proud race of predominantly East Slavic-speaking people mainly located in Southern Russia and in South-Eastern Ukraine usually sparsely populated areas and islands in the lower Dnieper, Don, Terek and Ural river basins. They played an important role in the historical and cultural development of Ukraine. So, we invite you to download this collection of Cossack culture, sit back and enjoy these stories before you embark on reading them to a younger audience. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fairy tales and legends of olden China are as ancient as the land itself. They have an oriental glow which can only be found in the orient. They glitter like precious stones, shine like gold and shimmer like multicoloured silks fluttering in the breeze. They contain oriental wealth of fantastic and supernatural action, not too dissimilar to the tales in the “Thousand and One Nights”. The 73 stories herein embrace “Nursery Fairy Tales,” “Legends of the Gods,” “Tales of Saints and Magicians,” “Nature and Animal Tales,” “Ghost Stories,” “Historic Fairy Tales,” and “Literary Fairy Tales”. Like the “Arabian Nights,” they will fascinate the young reader and amply repay the attention of the older generations as well. Some are exquisitely poetic, such as “The Flower-Elves,” “The Lady of the Moon” or “The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden”; others like “How Three Heroes Came By Their Deaths Because Of Two Peaches,” carry us back dramatically and powerfully to the Chinese age of Chivalry. The summits of fantasy are scaled in the quasi-religious dramas of “The Ape Sun Wu Kung” and “Notscha,” or the weird sorceries unfolded in “The Kindly Magician.” Delightful ghost stories, with happy endings, such as “A Night on the Battlefield” and “The Ghost Who Was Foiled,” are paralleled with such idyllic love-tales as that of “Rose of Evening,” or such Lilliputian fancies as “The King of the Ants” and “The Little Hunting Dog.” It is quite safe to say that these Chinese fairy tales will give equal pleasure to the old as well as the young. They have been retold simply, with no changes in style or expression beyond such details of presentation which differences between oriental and occidental viewpoints at times compel. It is the writer’s hope that others may take as much pleasure in reading them as he did in their translation. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume you will find a further 29 illustrated children’s stories by the master story-teller - Hans Christian Andersen. This present volume is the second of the selected stories from Hans Andersen. Together both books include what, out of a larger number, are the cream of Andersen’s “crop”. "The Ice Maiden", “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” set the standards for folklorists, authors and story-tellers worldwide and have all since become children’s classics. "The Sandhills of Jutland", another volume by Andersen, was pronounced by John Ruskin to be “the most perfect story” that he knew. The tales in this volume are: The Flax The Daisy The Pea Blossom The Storks The Wild Swans The Last Dream Of The Old Oak The Portuguese Duck The Snow Man The Farmyard Cock And The Weathercock The Red Shoes The Little Mermaid Buckwheat What Happened To The Thistle The Pen And The Inkstand The Teapot Soup From A Sausage Skewer What The Goodman Does Is Always Right The Old Street Lamp The Shepherdess And The Chimney Sweep The Drop Of Water The Swineherd The Metal Pig The Flying Trunk The Butterfly The Goblin And The Huckster Everything In Its Right Place The Real Princess The Emperor's New Clothes Great Claus And Little Claus The power of his tales to charm and elevate runs like a living thread through whatever he writes. In the two books, the first of which is presented here, they have met the tests and held an undiminishing popularity among the best children's books. They have set the standard, and their place in permanent literature will grow wider and more secure as time passes. Only a few children's authors will be ranked among the Immortals, and Hans Andersen is without a doubt one of them. It adds a charm to the little stories of these two volumes to know that the genial author travelled widely for a man of his time and everywhere he went he was urged to tell the tales himself. Even though he had become world famous, he did with equal measures of charm and grace in the kitchens of the humble and in the courts of nobles and palaces of kings. As was said in the preface to the first volume, wherever there are children, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen will be read and loved for a long time yet. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities by the Publisher. =============== TAGS: Hans Andersen Fairy Tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, read, school children, homes, love to read, story-teller, imagination, sweet, sad, Flax, Daisy, Pea Blossom, Storks, Wild Swans, Last Dream, Old Oak, Portuguese Duck, Snow Man, Farmyard Cock, Weathercock, Red Shoes, Little Mermaid, Buckwheat, Thistle, Pen, Inkstand, Teapot, Soup, Sausage Skewer, Goodman, Right, Old Street Lamp, Shepherdess, Chimney Sweep, Drop Of Water, Swineherd, Metal Pig, Flying Trunk, Butterfly, Goblin, Huckster, Everything, Right Place, Real, Princess, Emperor's New Clothes, Great Claus, Little Claus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 38 Norwegian folk and fairy tales of elemental mountain, forest and sea spirits, have been handed down through the generations by hinds and huntsmen, woodcutters and fisher-folk, who led hard and lonely lives amid primitive surroundings are, perhaps, among the most fascinating the Scandinavian countries have to offer. Not only are they meant to delight children, and this they do not fail to do. “Grown-ups” who also, who take pleasure in a good story, will enjoy this book as well. Here you will find stories which are well told. Readers will enjoy the original legend of “Peer Gynt” as it existed before Ibsen gave it more symbolic meaning. You will also find a glowingly, beautiful picture of an Avalon of the Northern seas described in “The Island of Udröst.” And what could be more human and moving than the tragic “The Player on the Jew’s-Harp,” or none more genuinely entertaining than “The King’s Hares”? The thrill and fascination of black magic and mystery run through such stories as “The Secret Church,” “The Comrade,” and “Lucky Andrew.” In “The Honest Four-Shilling Piece” we have the adventures of a Norse Dick Whittington. “Storm Magic” is one of the most thrilling sea tales, bar none, ever written, but every story included in the volume seems to bring with it the breath of the Norse mountains. One cannot but believe that “The Book of Norwegian Fairy Tales” has an appeal for one and all, since it is a book in which fairy-tales mirror and reflect human yearnings and aspirations, human loves, ambitions and disillusionments, in an imaginatively festooned world. It is the translator’s hope that those who may come to know this book will derive as much pleasure from its reading as it gave him to translate it into English. Book excerpt: On the borders of the “Land o’ Dreams” and broad daylight, the real and the unreal are so strangely blended that children are puzzled to know where the boundary lies. Somewhere in that land is a room. And that room was all full of twilight; but there they sat, every one of them. I did not count them, but there were ever so many - Aladdin, Ali Baba, Fortunatis, Jack-the-Giant-Killer, Doctor Faustus, Bidpai, Cinderella, Patient Grizzle, the Soldier who cheated the Devil, St. George, Hans in Luck; and there was Sindbad the Sailor, and the Tailor who killed seven flies at a blow, as well. Alongside him was the Fisherman who fished up the Genie, the Lad who fiddled for the Jew, the Blacksmith who made Death sit in his apple-tree, and Boots, who always marries the Princess, whether he wants to or not—a rag-tag lot as ever you saw in your life, gathered from the four corners of the world, blown here by the Four Mighty Winds, brought together in Twilight Land. Each one of them had a story to tell……. In this collection of 16 enchanting tales, Howard Pyle intertwines each story with the next, crafting a unified world filled with princes and demons, genies and sorceresses, and all the characters that pitch in to wage the age-old battle between good and evil. The 16 tales told by these giants of Twilight Land are: The Stool Of Fortune The Talisman Of Solomon Ill-Luck And The Fiddler Empty Bottles Good Gifts And A Fool’s Folly The Good Of A Few Words Woman’s Wit A Piece Of Good Luck The Fruit Of Happiness Not A Pin To Choose Much Shall Have More And Little Shall Have Less Wisdom’s Wages And Folly’s Pay The Enchanted Island All Things Are As Fate Wills Where To Lay The Blame The Salt Of Life What is Twilight Land? It is a wonderful, wonderful place where no sun shines to scorch your back as you jog along the way, where no rain falls to make the road muddy and hard to travel, where no wind blows the dust into your eyes or the chill into your marrow. Where all is sweet and quiet and ready to go to bed. Where is Twilight Land? Ah! that I cannot tell you. You will either have to ask your mother or find it for yourself. We invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Fairy culture not seen in print for many-a-year; and immerse yourself in the tales and fables of yesteryear. ---------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: Twilight Land, fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, children’s stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, stool of fortune, talisman of Solomon, ill-luck, fiddler, empty bottles, good gifts, fool’s folly, good of a few words, woman’s wit, piece of good luck, fruit of happiness, pin, choose, much shall have more, little shall have less, wisdom’s wages, folly’s pay, enchanted island, fate, will, blame, salt of life

Book excerpt: Out in the Atlantic Ocean, almost due west of the Pillars of Hercules, lie the Azore Islands. It is just possible that the Azores are all that remain of the fabled, ancient city of Atlantis; for how else would such a small chain of islands end up with such a rich tapestry of folklore and fairy tales. It is here that Elsie Spicer Eells found these tales and recorded them for us to enjoy. In this volume of 34 illustrated children’s stories you will find tales like: Princess Bluegreen of the Seven Cities, The Islands of Flowers, Why Dogs Sniff, The Princess Who Lost Her Rings, The Master Of Magic, St. Anthony's Godchild, The Seven Enchanted Princes and many more. These stories will not be found in any traditional western fairy tale books. This makes these stories unique which will take children, and lovers of folklore, on a journey as yet untrodden by the majority. So, we invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Antlantean fairy culture, not seen in print for almost a century; and immerse yourself in the tales and fables of yesteryear. ---------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, children’s stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, Princess bluegreen of the seven cities, islands of flowers, Why dogs sniff, Longstaff, pinepuller, rockheaver, table, sifter pinchers, Linda branca and her mask, Fresh figs, Peter-of-the-pigs, princess who lost her rings, master of magic, St. Anthony's godchild, Trouble, young, little maid who was wise, Manoel littlebean, necklace of pearls, daughter of the king of naples, Maria-of-the-forest, seven enchanted princes, listening king, José the beast slayer, princess of the lost island, Why the alvéloa bird received a blessing, Why the codorniz bird received a curse, Outside the door like the mother of st.
