Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep and the Goats She looked in the cool, Shaded drawing-room for a figure which had been wont, of late, to take large possession of that pleasant place, seizing upon its easiest chair, lopping over either end Of its sofa, squatting, with the grace inseparable from its long, limber proportions, on the floor, if that position happened to commend itself. Now the room was empty. SO was the wide garden, through which she searched in vain for the form which SO frequently basked on its sunny lawns, and haunted its shady nooks. Download or read book Wild Oxen, Sheep Goats of All Lands written by R. Lydekker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Oxen, Sheep Goats of All Lands: Living and Extinct IN its general treatment of the subject this volume follows the lines of T/ze Deer of All Lands; generic and sub-generic groups, as well as species and sub-species, being, so far as possible, made to have the same relative rank as in the latter. A similar prominent position is also given to the English names of the various animals described. Much that appears in the introductory portion of the companion volume has a bearing on the present work. And it has accordingly been deemed unnecessary to repeat either the distinctive characteristics of the group Pecora, the subdivisions of the Tertiary period, or the names and limits of the geographical regions into which the surface of the globe may be divided all these being detailed in T/ze Deer q/l Lana/5. One feature of the latter - the numerous photographs of living animals - will be missed in the present volume. But this is unavoidable, as there is no collection in this country of the animals described in the sequel comparable with the one which afforded the illustrations in question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This promises to be the only book on sheep you will ever need! Packed full of detailed information, The Sheep Book for Smallholders covers every aspect of keeping sheep on a small scale. Beginning with a brief overview of the sheep industry, and the rise and fall of the artisan shepherd, the author has logically divided the book up into the shepherd's calendar, so that the sheep keeper knows what to expect with each season. All aspects of looking after the flock are covered, including selection, culling, nutrition, housing, lambing, grassland management, ailments and prevention. There are also sections on home slaughter and butcher, and, uniquely, processing the byproducts, including the fleece and keeping sheep for dairying. Unusually, the book also has a section on training sheepdogs. Supported by stunning photography and clear illustrations, as well as huge and useful appendices. This is a welcome addition to the smallholder's bookshelf, and is going to be a reference classic in years to come.

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Synopsis The Rocky Mountain Goat (Classic Reprint) by : Madison Grant
Download or read book The Rocky Mountain Goat (Classic Reprint) written by Madison Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rocky Mountain Goat HE white or Rocky Mountain goat shares with the musk-ox the honor of being the least known of the game animals of North America and descriptions of it written even as recently as ten years ago are valueless, as in many cases this animal is confused with white mountain sheep and even with deer. The explanation of this lack of knowledge lies in the extremely re mote and inaccessible habitat of the goat, which begins in the northwestern United States, among the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains and of the coast'ranges and extends north, through British Columbia, into Alaska. The material in most natural histories, relating to this animal, is scanty and based on very inadequate information, since the opportunity to see and hunt it has not been granted to many. In captivity, we have had, on the Atlantic coast, only eight immature specimens, two in Boston in 1899, two in Philadelphia in 1893, and the four now (1905) living in the New York Zoological Park. One well grown male is living at this time in the 'london Zoological Garden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cattle, Sheep, Goats and Swine No apology seems called for in presenting to English-speaking veterinary surgeons and students a treatise 011 the diseases of cattle. To those entrusted with the onerous task of preventing or curing disease in cattle, sheep, and swine the scantiness of permanent literature dealing with the subject must always have proved a matter of some embarrass ment, while to teachers and students alike the want of a concise and modern text-book has long been a difficulty of the first order. It is hoped that the present volume may go some way towards remedying this state of affairs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
