Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shaw Bulletin, Vol. 4: Catalogue Number 1934-1935, Announcements for 1935-1936 Shaw University was founded in December 1865 when a theologi cal class was formed in the old Guion Hotel situated where the State Museum now stands. This class was formed by Dr. Henry Martin Tupper who was honorably discharged from the Union army after serving for three years as a private and as a chaplain. On October 10, 1865, Doctor Tupper settled in Raleigh with his bride, Mrs. Sarah B. Tupper, and in December organized the class which was to develop into Shaw University. Shortly after the formation -of the theological class, Dr. Tupper saw the need Of expansion of his activities. With $500 which he had saved while in the army, he purchased a lot at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets and there erected a two-storied wooden structure. With the help Of a few faithful followers, he constructed this building from timber prepared from trees that they themselves had felled in the forests. The Raleigh Institute, as it was called, was one Of the largest strue tures of its kind in the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered across the South-East Asian massif, a few dozen ethnic groups (numbering around 50 million) maintain highly original cultural identities and political and economic traditions, against pressure from national majorities. They face the same challenges. The means by which social change has been imposed by the lowlanders are similar from country to country, and the results are comparable. The originality of this book lies in the combination of multi-disciplinary mixing of social anthropology, history and human geography; multi-culturality grouping together several cultural contexts; trans-nationality straddling five countries and bridging the traditional divide between South China and Mainland South-East Asia; and history reaching back 300 years.

We know so much more about the Christian and church life of black Americans than we did even a dozen years ago, but all the recent discoveries whet our insatiable appetites to know it all. That goal will never be attained, of course, but there do remain many conquerable worlds. Sherry Sherrod DuPree set her mind to conquering one of those worlds. She has persisted, with the results detailed here. A huge number of items are available to inform us about Holiness, Pentecostal, and Charismatic congregations and organizations in the African-American Christian community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of Music in Black American Life collects research and analysis that originally appeared in the journals American Music and the Black Music Research Journal, and in the University of Illinois Press's acclaimed book series Music in American Life. In these selections, experts from a cross-section of disciplines engage with fundamental issues in ways that changed our perceptions of Black music. The topics includes the culturally and musically complex Black music-making of colonial America; string bands and other lesser-known genres practiced by Black artists; the jubilee industry and its audiences; and innovators in jazz, blues, and Black gospel. Eclectic and essential, Music in Black American Life, 1600–1945 offers specialists and students alike a gateway to the history and impact of Black music in the United States. Contributors: R. Reid Badger, Rae Linda Brown, Samuel A. Floyd Jr., Sandra Jean Graham, Jeffrey Magee, Robert M. Marovich, Harriet Ottenheimer, Eileen Southern, Katrina Dyonne Thompson, Stephen Wade, and Charles Wolfe
