Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shaw Bulletin, Vol. 4: Catalogue Number 1934-1935, Announcements for 1935-1936 Shaw University was founded in December 1865 when a theologi cal class was formed in the old Guion Hotel situated where the State Museum now stands. This class was formed by Dr. Henry Martin Tupper who was honorably discharged from the Union army after serving for three years as a private and as a chaplain. On October 10, 1865, Doctor Tupper settled in Raleigh with his bride, Mrs. Sarah B. Tupper, and in December organized the class which was to develop into Shaw University. Shortly after the formation -of the theological class, Dr. Tupper saw the need Of expansion of his activities. With $500 which he had saved while in the army, he purchased a lot at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets and there erected a two-storied wooden structure. With the help Of a few faithful followers, he constructed this building from timber prepared from trees that they themselves had felled in the forests. Book excerpt: How could Bernard Shaw have found anything to admire in Queen Victoria? Or in the passionate evangelical "General" William Booth of the Salvation Army? What possible connections could there be between Shaw, the passionate socialist, and the Tory Winston Churchill, who seemed to represent everything Shaw should have rejected and despised? In Shaw's People, noted Shaw scholar Stanley Weintraub explores the relationships between Shaw and twelve of his contemporaries, including Queen Victoria, Oscar Wilde, H. L. Mencken, James Joyce, and Winston Churchill. Weintraub chose these individuals as lenses through which to look at Shaw but also for the ways in which their lives are illuminated through their often paradoxical relationships with Shaw. While Shaw never met Queen Victoria, his sovereign during the first forty-five years of his life, the degree of her influence is apparent in Shaw's reference to himself, in his ninth decade, as "an old Victorian." Weintraub explores those in the literary world who interacted with Shaw, such as H. L. Mencken, one of Shaw's earliest American fans, who turned against his hero at the peak of his translatlantic reputation, and James Joyce, who was loath to confess his respect for his fellow Irishman. He investigates the curious mutual admiration between Shaw and W. B. Yeats and Shaw's championing of Oscar Wilde despite the vast difference in their lifestyles. Weintraub's skillful investigation of each of these twelve relationships illuminates a different facet of Shaw, from his pre-dramatist years in London through the close of his long life.

In a review of Frank Harris on Bernard Shaw (1931), Richard Aldington dismisses Shaw as human being, thinker, and dramatist: "You must be a Shavian to admire and love Shaw the artist." In an interview with Leon Hugo, biographer Michael Holroyd discusses his biography of G.B.S., responses to his biography, and future work involving G.B.S. Jeffrey M. Wallmann argues that alienation in Shaw's plays enhances their contemporary value. Bernard F. Dukore investigates Shaw's reasons for discarding the original final act of The Philanderer. Rodelle Weintraub argues persuasively that You Never Can Tell requires the audience to choose between "Crampton's reality" and "Crampton's dream." Mark H. Sterner, weighing the various charges against Ann Whitefield's character in Man and Superman, concludes that Shaw's treatment of her and Tanner "as significantly different, but nevertheless equal . . . in itself was a revolutionary change in the status of sexual power relationships." Julie A. Sparks identifies W. W. Henley's sonnet "'Liza" as a likely source not only for some of Eliza's traits in Pygmalion but also for images in Man and Superman and Major Barbara. Charles A. Carpenter considers Buoyant Billions and Farfetched Fables in the context of Shaw's response to the birth of the atomic age. Paul Bauschatz, evaluating the differences between My Fair Lady and Pygmalion, illustrates why the film can reflect Shaw's play "only uneasily."
