Dictionary of Shakespeare has been carefully written in a non-technical way to insure that all levels of student and researcher will find the entries clear and uncomplicated. The entries help explain the terms used in Shakespeare's texts and in their execution and so provides the historical context required to give the reader a full background of the term. This feature sets the dictionary apart from others on the same subject that concentrate either on single plays or on the biographies of his characters. No other title explains so great a range of theatrical, historical, and"Shakespearean" terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespeare Cyclopaedia and New Glossary: With the Most Important Variorum Readings, Intended as a Supplement to All the Ordinary Editions of Shakespeare's Works Special acknowledgment is due to The New Variorum edition of Dr. Horace Howard Furness. This must form the foundation stone of all future collections of Shakespearean literature; it is so thorough, accurate and comprehensive that after consulting it upon any disputed point the student feels that he has heard all that is to be said upon the subject. In the thirteen volumes already issued (twelve plays), one is pretty sure to find a discussion of the most important Shakespearean words, allusions and. Dark passages which occur 1n the other plays, and by the aid of a Concordance it is easy to see just where to look for what is wanted. Some may think that I have drawn too freely from this noble work, but at most I have merely dipped my little bucket into the tide of a full flowing river and given my readers a taste of its pure and refreshing waters. For information in regard to Mythology and Classical Biography I have gone to the great storehouse of such knowledge, the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, edited by William Smith, D.C.L LL.D., and I cannot too fully acknowledge my indebtedness. To those who wish to extend their studies in this direction this work is invaluable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespearian Dictionary: Forming a General Index to All the Popular Expressions, and Most Striking Passages in the Works of Shakespeare; From a Few Words to Fifty or More Lines The matchless genius of Shakespeare has furnished occupation for authors, from the very age in which he wrote, down to the pre sent day; so that, independent of the innumerable editions of his plays, from the original authentic copies, to the modern mutila tions represented under his name upon the stage, we have more than two hundred works of which Shakespeare and his writings are the subject. Such being the case, it may be thought necessary, for one who ventures to add to the number, to offer some apology to the public for so doing. That tendered for the present compilation is founded on the belief, that among all these works, there does not exist one which effectively occupies the ground here taken, and very few which even attempt to connect Shakespeare's felicitous expressions -exhibiting as they do, a matchless insight into human nature with the various casualties, motives, and objects of ordinary life. Such a task, if performed with judgment and faithfulness, could hardly fail to prove both pleasing and useful. In support of the opinion that this task yet remained to be accomplished, it will be necessary to submit a few observations concerning the works which profess to have the same object, upon the comparative merits of which with the shakespearian dictionary, its pretensions to public favour must be founded. The dictionary covers works whose importance to Shakespeare has emerged more clearly in recent years due to new research, as well as explaining current thinking on long-recognized sources such as Plutarch, Ovid, Holinshed, Ariosto and Montaigne. Entries for all major sources include surveys of the writer's place in Shakespeare's time, detailed discussion of their relation to his work, and full bibliography. These are enhanced by sample passages from early modern England writers, together with reproductions of pages from the original texts. Now available in paperback with a new preface bringing the book up to date, this is an invaluable reference tool.
