Book excerpt: "The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare, originally published in the First Folio of 1623. Although it was grouped among the comedies, some modern editors have relabelled the play as one of Shakespeare's late romances. Some critics consider it to be one of Shakespeare's problem plays, because the first three acts are filled with intense psychological drama, while the last two acts are comedic and supply a happy ending."

Book excerpt: Reissuing works originally published between 1984 and 1995, this set brings back into print early volumes from the Shakespearean Criticism Series originally edited by Joseph Price. The books present selections of renowned scholarship on each play, touching on performances as well as the dramatic literature. The pieces included are a mixture of influential historical criticism, more modern interpretations and enlightening reviews, most of which were published in wide-spread places before these compilations were first made. Companions to the plays, these books showcase critical opinion and scholarly debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Bernhardt, London, his own acting—Edwin Booth commented on these and hundreds of other subjects in letters to William Winter, friend of twenty years and drama critic for the New York Tribune. Since he wrote neither autobiography nor diary, the letters constitute the fullest and most detailed record of Booth's career between 1869 and 1890, and arc a new and significant source of information about the actor. The 125 letters which Daniel Watermeier has selected and arranged in this volume are fully annotated; each is preceded by a headnote which provides an introduction to its content and narrative continuity from one letter to the next. Mr. Watermeier's introduction includes biographical sketches of Edwin Booth and William Winter and sets the context of their friendship. With few exceptions, the Booth-Winter letters have not hitherto been made public. They represent a major addition to studies of Edwin Booth and to the history of the American theater. Originally published in 1971. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare, written around the middle of his career (1598 and 1599) and originally published in the First Folio of 1623. The play is a story of loss and redemption. In a fit of wild and unfounded jealousy, Leontes, the King of Sicily, convinces himself that his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend's love child. Leontes's jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Book excerpt: Unlock the more straightforward side of The Winter’s Tale with this concise and insightful summary and analysis! This engaging summary presents an analysis of The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare, a so-called ‘problem play’ that is believed to be one of the last works he ever wrote. It tells the story of Leontes, King of Sicily, who comes to (mistakenly) believe that his wife Hermione is having an affair with his friend Polixenes, King of Bohemia. After attempting to have Polixenes killed, he publicly accuses Hermione of adultery and banishes their newborn daughter. However, he comes to his senses after the apparent deaths of both Hermione and their young son, and spends the remainder of the play trying to atone for his actions. William Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest playwrights in English literary history, and the popularity of his works remains undiminished even today, several centuries after his death. Book excerpt: Named One of Esquire's 50 Best Biographies of All Time The Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, reissued with a new afterword for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. A young man from a small provincial town moves to London in the late 1580s and, in a remarkably short time, becomes the greatest playwright not of his age alone but of all time. How is an achievement of this magnitude to be explained? Stephen Greenblatt brings us down to earth to see, hear, and feel how an acutely sensitive and talented boy, surrounded by the rich tapestry of Elizabethan life, could have become the world’s greatest playwright.
