Download or read book Sirius Matters written by Noah Brosch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since very early times Sirius was a point of attraction in the night sky. It served to synchronize calendars in antiquity and was the subject of many myths and legends, including some modern ones. It was perceived as a red star for more than 400 years, but such reports were relegated to the Mediterranean region. Astronomically, Sirius is a very bright star. This, and its present close distance to us, argues in favor of it being the target of detailed studies of stellar structure and evolution. Its binary nature, with a companion that is one of the more massive white dwarfs, is an additional reason for such studies. This book collects the published information on Sirius in an attempt to derive a coherent picture of how this system came to look as it does.
Book Synopsis Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars by : Kaspar von Braun
Download or read book Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars written by Kaspar von Braun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relations between physical parameters of extrasolar planets and their respective parent stars. Planetary parameters are often directly dependent upon their stellar counterparts. In addition, the star is almost always the only visible component of the system and contains most of the system mass. Consequently, the parent star heavily influences every aspect of planetary physics and astrophysics. Drs. Kaspar von Braun and Tabetha Boyajian use direct methods to characterize exoplanet host starts that minimize the number of assumptions needed to be made in the process. The book provides a background on interferometric techniques for stellar diameter measurements, illustrates the authors' approach on using additional data to fully characterize the stars, provides a comprehensive update on the current state of the field, and examines in detail a number of historically significant and well-studied exoplanetary systems.
Book Synopsis Reports on Astronomy 2006-2009 (IAU XXVIIA) by : Karel A. van der Hucht
Download or read book Reports on Astronomy 2006-2009 (IAU XXVIIA) written by Karel A. van der Hucht and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-23 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transactions XXVIIA Reports on Astronomy 2006-2009 provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of what has been achieved in astronomy during the years 2006 to 2009. These insightful and up-to-date reviews have been written by the presidents and chairpersons of the IAU scientific bodies: the Divisions, the Commissions, and the Working Groups. Topics covered in this wide-ranging volume include: fundamental astronomy; the Sun and heliosphere; planetary sciences; stars; variable stars; interstellar matter; the Galactic system; galaxies and the Universe; optical and infrared techniques; radio astronomy; space and high-energy astrophysics; and other IAU activities. The reviews have been written at a level suitable for colleagues in the same fields, but will also be useful for students and researchers wishing to gain an overview of astronomical fields beyond their own research area.
Book Synopsis Eclipsing Binary Stars: Modeling and Analysis by : Josef Kallrath
Download or read book Eclipsing Binary Stars: Modeling and Analysis written by Josef Kallrath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-14 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomers learn much of what they know about the mass, brightness, and size of stars by observing binary systems, in which two stars orbit each other, periodically cutting off the others light. This book provides astronomers with a guide to specifying an astrophysical model for a set of observations, selecting an algorithm to determine the parameters of the model, and estimating the errors of the parameters.

Download or read book Evolution of Binary and Multiple Star Systems written by Peter P. Eggleton and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The latest research on the theory of binary and multiple star systems is presented in these papers from a summer 2000 conference. Papers are organized in sections on stellar evolution, the formation of binary and multiple stars, triple systems, tidal evolution, magnetic activity, binary populations, common-envelope evolution, Type Ia supernova and gamma-ray burst progenitors, white-dwarf binaries, neutron-star binaries and binary pulsars, and black hole binaries. The fate of submillisecond pulsars, the population of faint transients in the galactic center, the violent past of Cygnus X-2, and orbital period behavior of some semi-detached eclipsing binaries during the last few decades are some of the subjects discussed.
