Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Century Prose Although it is usual for the sake of convenience to classify great writers according to the century in which they flourished, the division must always be an arbitrary one, since the beginning and ending of a century does not necessarily coincide with the beginning and ending of other things. It does, however, so happen that the authors selected for this volume, with one exception, all lived and worked and died within the seventeenth century. Before the seventeenth century English Literature has little to show of what is by common consent regarded as literary prose in the modem sense of the term, that is, prose which follows the approved rules, so far as there can be any, of style. Sir Thomas More, Roger Ascham, Tyndale, the translator of the Bible, Sir Philip Sidney, Richard Hooker, Sir Walter Raleigh, Francis Bacon, to mention only the chief names, wrote literary prose before that era, and their work forms important steps in the evolution of English prose. But the old superstition, if we may so call it, that prose could only be properly written in Latin still lingered. Book excerpt: Alistair Fowler's celebrated anthology includes generous selections from the work of all the century's major poets, notably Donne, Jonson, Milton, Drayton, Herbert, Marvell, and Dryden. It strikes a balance between Metaphysical wit and intellect and Jonsonian simplicity, while also accommodating hitherto neglected popular verse. The result is a truer, more Catholic representation of seventeenth-century verse than any previous anthology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Half of the Seventeenth Century A word by way of preface is requisite, if only to explain to the reader, who may take up this volume without recalling its place in a series, why there is no chapter on Spain in a history of European literature during the first half of the seventeenth century. The present writer undertook his task on the understanding that the Spanish literature of the epoch was covered by Mr Hannay's chapters in The Later Renaissance. It was explained there that the principle of overlapping, which must be admitted in any attempt to divide European literature into epochs, is specially applicable to the case of Spain; and the six chapters devoted to the literature of Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in that volume preclude the necessity of treatment in this. The same principle has been applied, to a certain extent, in the chapters on Dutch literature, with which this volume opens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Century Anthology A habit has prevailed among the less studious readers, of connecting the poets of the later seventeenth century with those of the early eighteenth. There is a common impression that the "Restoration" had already put on the perruque, raised the heel, and practised the strut. But it was not so. The long locks were arranged by a French coiffeur, but they grew where they were curled. Not to carry the slight parable too far, there was abundant nature in the poetry of that splendid time, naturel ven over abundant, and amid the "conceits" which the playful and impassioned pods practised with all ingenuity and artifice, there lived a wild sweetness of nature something wilder and more natural, more rapturous and unrestrained than the spirit of the simpler Elizabethans. The truth is that no two ages of English poetry are so unlike, so completely divided, so suddenly severed, as the seventeenth century and the eighteenth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Beauties of the Seventeenth Century Comparatively speaking, to the task of the judges of a modern living beauty competition, theirs was an easy one, for the feelings of the ladies had not to be taken into account, nor their muscular development and power of retaliation should they be unsuccessful in drawing a prize. So varying are our ideals of beauty that the odds are a jury of twelve picked connoisseurs would never agree. And yet these things are officially settled somehow. Warren Billings brings together more than 200 period documents, organized topically, with each chapter introduced by an interpretive essay. Topics include the settlement of Jamestown, the evolution of government and the structure of society, forced labor, the economy, Indian-Anglo relations, and Bacon's Rebellion. This revised, expanded, and updated edition adds approximately 30 additional documents, extending the chronological reach to 1700. Freshly rethought chapter introductions and suggested readings incorporate the vast scholarship of the past 30 years. New illustrations of seventeenth-century artifacts and buildings enrich the texts with recent archaeological findings. With these enhancements, and a full index, students, scholars, and those interested in early Virginia will find these documents even more enlightening.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salem: A Tale of the Seventeenth Century The requirements of literary conventionally seem to demand a preface as a necessary adjunct of a book - we had nearly written a necessary evil; and as the beaten path is acknowledged to be the safest, we yield in cheerful acquiescence - although to call that a preface which is usually written after the book is completed, would seem to unassisted reason very like a misnomer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Century Lyrics Some experience in compiling selections has taught me that it is scarcely possible, so far as the reader is concerned, to take too little trouble in explaining the method on which they are compiled. I shall only say as briefly as possible that I have construed the term 'seventeenth Century liberally, but not, I hope, too liberally, by extending the terminus a ouo a little into the sixteenth. The death of Dryden, the last singer for many years who really sang in anything but comic vein, coincides so exactly with the century's close that no trespass there was necessary, or possible. For the rest, I have seldom considered the familiarity, and never the strangeness, of the pieces I have chosen that is to say, I have seldom been deterred from giving a place to anything that I thought superlatively good because it was already well known, and I have.
