The Mintek synergist (0.25 M), in combination with a branched carboxylic acid, specifically Neodecanoic acid (0.50 M in Sasol C12-C13 aliphatic diluent) gives a good separation between the extraction vs. pH curves for nickel and calcium (2.40 pH units) and a reasonable separation between cobalt and manganese (0.9 pH units). In a batch countercurrent extraction experiment with three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9, high recoveries of nickel (99.9 per cent) and cobalt (84.7 per cent) were obtained, with only small co-extractions of calcium (1.5 per cent), manganese (2.7 per cent) and magnesium (0.04 per cent). To increase the recovery of cobalt, the pH in extraction would have to be increased slightly.

Synergistic enhancements of extraction were found with aldoximes, but not with ketoximes. The synergistic effects are larger for nickel than for cobalt, with the result that the selectivities of the carboxylic acids for nickel over cobalt are considerably enhanced in the presence of aldoximes. The influence of the molecular structure of the oxime and carboxylic acid components upon the synergistic effects is rationalized in terms of the prevailing stereochemical and electronic effects. The extracted complexes were shown to be octahedral in structure, with the compositions NiA2(oxime)4 and CoA2(oxime)4. The mixed reagent systems may prove useful for the selective extraction of nickel in the presence of cobalt.

Book excerpt: The effect of alkylpyridines and related compounds upon the extraction of divalent nickel and cobalt from nitrate media by solutions of some carboxylic acids in xylene was studied. Addition of the pyridine compounds caused substantial synergistic shifts in the pH50 values for the extraction of both metals, and these were greater for nickel than for cobalt in any given system. With regard to the influence of the nature of the individual extractants on the extent of the synergistic effects, the shifts in the pH50 values were found to increase with increasing pKa and with increasing steric bulk of the carboxylic acid component. These observations can be rationalized in terms of the ease of replacement of solvating carboxylic acid ligands (HA) by the N-donor ligands (L). In contrast, the synergistic effects were somewhat less dependent on the structure of the pyridine derivative, and the shifts did not usually decrease significantly when L contained an electron-withdrawing group. However, the shifts were greatly decreased when the substituent group on the pyridine ring was located adjacent to the nitrogen atom (i.e. the metal-coordinating site), presumably for steric reasons. Batch countercurrent experiments were carried out with an aqueous feed solution containing 5 gL-1 nickel and 5 gL-1 cobalt, and an organic phase containing 0.50 M 4-(5-nonyl)pyridine and 0.25 M 4-^Itert^R-bytylbenzoic acid. Four extraction stages of pH 4.9 and two scrubbing stages were use to obtain a 99.6% pure nickel product and a 98.7% pure cobalt product. Complete stripping of the loaded organic phase was readily achieved by contact with dilute mineral acid to give an equilibrium pH of 3.0.
