Book Synopsis Modular Forms, a Computational Approach by : William A. Stein
Download or read book Modular Forms, a Computational Approach written by William A. Stein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007-02-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This marvellous and highly original book fills a significant gap in the extensive literature on classical modular forms. This is not just yet another introductory text to this theory, though it could certainly be used as such in conjunction with more traditional treatments. Its novelty lies in its computational emphasis throughout: Stein not only defines what modular forms are, but shows in illuminating detail how one can compute everything about them in practice. This is illustrated throughout the book with examples from his own (entirely free) software package SAGE, which really bring the subject to life while not detracting in any way from its theoretical beauty. The author is the leading expert in computations with modular forms, and what he says on this subject is all tried and tested and based on his extensive experience. As well as being an invaluable companion to those learning the theory in a more traditional way, this book will be a great help to those who wish to use modular forms in applications, such as in the explicit solution of Diophantine equations. There is also a useful Appendix by Gunnells on extensions to more general modular forms, which has enough in it to inspire many PhD theses for years to come. While the book's main readership will be graduate students in number theory, it will also be accessible to advanced undergraduates and useful to both specialists and non-specialists in number theory. --John E. Cremona, University of Nottingham William Stein is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Washington at Seattle. He earned a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley and has held positions at Harvard University and UC San Diego. His current research interests lie in modular forms, elliptic curves, and computational mathematics.

Book Synopsis A Primer on Mapping Class Groups by : Benson Farb
Download or read book A Primer on Mapping Class Groups written by Benson Farb and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the mapping class group Mod(S) is a classical topic that is experiencing a renaissance. It lies at the juncture of geometry, topology, and group theory. This book explains as many important theorems, examples, and techniques as possible, quickly and directly, while at the same time giving full details and keeping the text nearly self-contained. The book is suitable for graduate students. A Primer on Mapping Class Groups begins by explaining the main group-theoretical properties of Mod(S), from finite generation by Dehn twists and low-dimensional homology to the Dehn-Nielsen-Baer theorem. Along the way, central objects and tools are introduced, such as the Birman exact sequence, the complex of curves, the braid group, the symplectic representation, and the Torelli group. The book then introduces Teichmüller space and its geometry, and uses the action of Mod(S) on it to prove the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms. Topics include the topology of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, the connection with surface bundles, pseudo-Anosov theory, and Thurston's approach to the classification.

Book Synopsis The Selberg Trace Formula for PSL_2(R)^n by : Isaac Y. Efrat
Download or read book The Selberg Trace Formula for PSL_2(R)^n written by Isaac Y. Efrat and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We evaluate the Selberg trace formula for all discrete, irreducible, cofinite subgroups of PSL2 ([double-struck capital]R)[italic superscript]n. In particular, this involves studying the spectral theory of the fundamental domain, and the analysis of the appropriate Eisenstein series. A special role is played by the Hilbert modular groups, both because of their relation to the general case, stemming from a rigidity theorem, and their inherent algebraic number theoretic interest.
Book Synopsis Noncommutative Geometry by : Alain Connes
Download or read book Noncommutative Geometry written by Alain Connes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noncommutative Geometry is one of the most deep and vital research subjects of present-day Mathematics. Its development, mainly due to Alain Connes, is providing an increasing number of applications and deeper insights for instance in Foliations, K-Theory, Index Theory, Number Theory but also in Quantum Physics of elementary particles. The purpose of the Summer School in Martina Franca was to offer a fresh invitation to the subject and closely related topics; the contributions in this volume include the four main lectures, cover advanced developments and are delivered by prominent specialists.
Book Synopsis The Geometry and Topology of Three-Manifolds by : William P. Thurston
Download or read book The Geometry and Topology of Three-Manifolds written by William P. Thurston and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Thurston's work has had a profound influence on mathematics. He connected whole mathematical subjects in entirely new ways and changed the way mathematicians think about geometry, topology, foliations, group theory, dynamical systems, and the way these areas interact. His emphasis on understanding and imagination in mathematical learning and thinking are integral elements of his distinctive legacy. This four-part collection brings together in one place Thurston's major writings, many of which are appearing in publication for the first time. Volumes I–III contain commentaries by the Editors. Volume IV includes a preface by Steven P. Kerckhoff. Volume IV contains Thurston's highly influential, though previously unpublished, 1977–78 Princeton Course Notes on the Geometry and Topology of 3-manifolds. It is an indispensable part of the Thurston collection but can also be used on its own as a textbook or for self-study.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances by : Semyon Dyatlov
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances written by Semyon Dyatlov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering resonances generalize bound states/eigenvalues for systems in which energy can scatter to infinity. A typical resonance has a rate of oscillation (just as a bound state does) and a rate of decay. Although the notion is intrinsically dynamical, an elegant mathematical formulation comes from considering meromorphic continuations of Green's functions. The poles of these meromorphic continuations capture physical information by identifying the rate of oscillation with the real part of a pole and the rate of decay with its imaginary part. An example from mathematics is given by the zeros of the Riemann zeta function: they are, essentially, the resonances of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The Riemann hypothesis then states that the decay rates for the modular surface are all either or . An example from physics is given by quasi-normal modes of black holes which appear in long-time asymptotics of gravitational waves. This book concentrates mostly on the simplest case of scattering by compactly supported potentials but provides pointers to modern literature where more general cases are studied. It also presents a recent approach to the study of resonances on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The last two chapters are devoted to semiclassical methods in the study of resonances.
Book Synopsis Spectral Methods of Automorphic Forms by : Henryk Iwaniec
Download or read book Spectral Methods of Automorphic Forms written by Henryk Iwaniec and published by American Mathematical Society, Revista Matemática Iberoamericana (RMI), Madrid, Spain. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automorphic forms are one of the central topics of analytic number theory. In fact, they sit at the confluence of analysis, algebra, geometry, and number theory. In this book, Henryk Iwaniec once again displays his penetrating insight, powerful analytic techniques, and lucid writing style. The first edition of this book was an underground classic, both as a textbook and as a respected source for results, ideas, and references. Iwaniec treats the spectral theory of automorphic forms as the study of the space of $L^2$ functions on the upper half plane modulo a discrete subgroup. Key topics include Eisenstein series, estimates of Fourier coefficients, Kloosterman sums, the Selberg trace formula and the theory of small eigenvalues. Henryk Iwaniec was awarded the 2002 Cole Prize for his fundamental contributions to number theory.
Book Synopsis The 1-2-3 of Modular Forms by : Jan Hendrik Bruinier
Download or read book The 1-2-3 of Modular Forms written by Jan Hendrik Bruinier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of three series of lectures given at the summer school on "Modular Forms and their Applications" at the Sophus Lie Conference Center in Nordfjordeid in June 2004. The first series treats the classical one-variable theory of elliptic modular forms. The second series presents the theory of Hilbert modular forms in two variables and Hilbert modular surfaces. The third series gives an introduction to Siegel modular forms and discusses a conjecture by Harder. It also contains Harder's original manuscript with the conjecture. Each part treats a number of beautiful applications.
