Book excerpt: William Newell once wrote, If the keys of the Bible, up to the book of Psalms, hang on Moses books, those of the rest of the Bible, through Revelation, hang on Daniel; and indeed very many of the prophetic Psalms fail to open to us till we see their solution in the wonderful visions of the faithful seer of the captivity. Empire of Gold sprang from a series of Bible studies on Daniel. The information collated and compiled herein opens to us the biblical books of this crucial time in history. Empire of Gold is a series of historical novels set in the time of a pantheon of biblical and historical greats. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Josiah, and Nebuchadnezzar live again as Empire expounds their deeds and the chaos of their world. Foundations tells the story that leads up to the world war that changed everything. Review In the introduction to Empire of Gold, the author asks, "Who said history was boring?" And this book takes away any doubt, dramatizing history with solid characters and full-bore action. We follow Jeremiah from his youth through the final scene as he is told he is the "prophet to the nations." We end up caring about him and what happens. The author does a good job of weaving biblical events, historical facts and imagined events and dialogue. The book brings the stories alive, and is a page-turner. Overall, a thorough, lively accounting. ---Judge, 2nd Annual Writers Digest Self-Published eBook Awards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two centuries hundreds of apparitions of the Virgin Mary have been reported, drawing crowds to the seers and the sites and constituting events of great religious significance for millions of people worldwide. Here Sandra Zimdars-Swartz provides a detective-like investigation of the experiences and interpretations of six major apparitions, including those at La Salette and Lourdes in France during the mid-nineteenth century; at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917; and the more recent ones at San Damiano, Italy; Garabandal, Spain; and Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, where the apparitions continue. Adopting a phenomenological approach to these "encounters with Mary"--one that is neither apologetic nor antagonistic--the author explores the tension between the personal meaning of the events for their subjects and the public appropriation of this meaning by a larger religious community. Along the way she examines the backgrounds of the seers, their willingness or reluctance to talk about the apparitions and their messages, the amount of emotional support they received from family and community as news of the apparitions spread, the reports of miracles at apparition sites, the reactions of local authorities, and the steps taken by the Roman Catholic Church in officially recognizing or rejecting the apparitions as worthy of belief. The author concludes with a survey of religious worldviews based on Marian apparitions, focusing especially on the now-popular transcultural apocalyptic nature of these messages to the modern world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jarrod L. Whitaker examines the ritualized poetic construction of male identity in the Rgveda, India's oldest Sanskrit text, arguing that an important aspect of early Vedic life was the sustained promotion and embodiment of what it means to be a true man. The Rgveda contains over a thousand hymns, addressed primarily to three gods: the deified ritual Fire, Agni; the war god, Indra; and Soma, who is none other than the personification of the sacred beverage sóma. The hymns were sung in day-long fire rituals in which poet-priests prepared the sacred drink to empower Indra. The dominant image of Indra is that of a highly glamorized, violent, and powerful Aryan male; the three gods represent the ideals of manhood. Whitaker finds that the Rgvedic poet-priests employed a fascinating range of poetic and performative strategies--some explicit, others very subtle--to construct their masculine ideology, while justifying it as the most valid way for men to live. Poet-priests naturalized this ideology by encoding it within a man's sense of his body and physical self. Rgvedic ritual rhetoric and practices thus encode specific male roles, especially the role of man as warrior, while embedding these roles in a complex network of social, economic, and political relationships. Strong Arms and Drinking Strength is the first book in English to examine the relationship between Rgvedic gods, ritual practices, and the identities and expectations placed on men in ancient India.
