Book Synopsis Guidelines for Historic Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement by : Mary Elizabeth McCahon
Download or read book Guidelines for Historic Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement written by Mary Elizabeth McCahon and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2008 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a literature search, findings of a survey on the current state of historic bridge rehabilitation or replacement decision making by state and local transportation agencies, and nationally applicable decision-making guidelines for historic bridges. The guidelines are intended to be used as the protocol for defining when rehabilitation of historic bridges can be considered prudent and feasible and when it is not based on engineering and environmental data and judgments. The guidelines include identification of various approaches to bringing historic bridges into conformance with current design and safety guidelines/standards, and the effect or implications of remedial action on historical significance. There are currently no such nationally applicable decision-making guidelines, but there are a variety of state and local processes and policies for managing historic bridges. Effective practices for the various processes inform the nationally applicable guidelines. The guidelines are in narrative and matrix format.

Book excerpt: Everything you need to know to save an old historic, truss-style bridge. The chapters are full of practical things: Sometimes this advice is offered in essay form. More often it is presented as to-do lists. In fact, the book begins with a comprehensive checklist of everything you need to know before you get started on saving a bridge. It's all here. There are even job descriptions for volunteers and interview questions for professionals who will need to be brought into the process. Useful case studies abound. An appendix of truss-bridge types gives prospective bridge-savers a useful starting point, and forty-one photographs give them a vision of the goal.

Book excerpt: Explore Historic Bridge Design through the Perspective of Modern Engineering Historic Bridges: Evaluation, Preservation, and Management provides both an admiring and a technical account of bridge engineering through an exploration of several remarkable examples. From ancient China to modern-day Minnesota, the book discusses the history and structural evaluation of bridges, as well as their preservation, and restoration. With chapters written by renowned engineers, this unique resource -- Compares the techniques and materials used in building three railroad bridges that traversed the Mississippi at the same site in 1865, 1887, and 1910 Investigates a legendary stone-arch bridge constructed in Ancient China in 606 A.D. Demonstrates how historians and engineers in Milwaukee found an approach to new bridge design that balances modern design standards with aesthetic interpretation Details a collaborative team approach to historic bridge management in Minnesota Considers the design and repair process of rapidly disappearing wrought iron bridges Discusses preservation of stone masonry aqueducts on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal An educational treatise for engineers and historical preservationists, this work includes a wealth of illustrations and scientific tables. Demonstrating historic engineering significance beyond their utilitarian function, the bridges encountered in these pages are true landmarks, as worthy of emulation as they are preservation.
