Book Synopsis Constitutionalizing Secession in Federalized States by : Miodrag A. Jovanović
Download or read book Constitutionalizing Secession in Federalized States written by Miodrag A. Jovanović and published by Eleven International Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thorough and professional study about secession. Starting from the perspective of contemporary political philosophy, the book explores the relevance of this issue for the theory and practice of federalism, as well as its status under current public international law, and concludes with a comparative constitutional analysis of the subject matter. In the final chapter, it provides a constitutionalized procedure of secession, based on fundamental liberal-democratic values. The book argues that a liberal-democratic response to the secession controversy might consist of the constitutionalization of a right to secession. While a number of recent works in political theory point to the fact that, under certain circumstances, the moral right of a group to secession should be recognized, only a few of them are ready to defend the institutionalization of that right through the instruments of constitutional law. This topical and thought-provoking book is a welcome contribution to the ongoing debate on secession and will be of interest to academics in a variety of disciplines, such as law, history, politics, international relations, philosophy and applied ethics, and to politicians and constitution-drafters.

Book Synopsis Federalism, Secession, and the American State by : Lawrence M. Anderson
Download or read book Federalism, Secession, and the American State written by Lawrence M. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One important tradition in political science conceives of the Civil War in the United States serving as the functional equivalent of the English and French Revolutions, bringing with it the victory of liberal democratic industrialism over aristocratic agriculturalism. From this perspective, the Civil War is notable for its impact on the American state. Surprisingly however, little attention has been paid to the distinguishing features of this historic rupture in American politics. Through primary source research and the re-analysis of the rich historical literature about the antebellum era and the causes of the Civil War, Lawrence A. Anderson explores the relationship between federalism and the movement for secession in the United States during the pre-civil war era. Focusing primarily on South Carolina, Anderson carefully revisits theory on institutional analysis of political development to expose what caused secession in the United States.
Book Synopsis The Counterrevolution of Slavery by : Manisha Sinha
Download or read book The Counterrevolution of Slavery written by Manisha Sinha and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-06-19 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive analysis of politics and ideology in antebellum South Carolina, Manisha Sinha offers a provocative new look at the roots of southern separatism and the causes of the Civil War. Challenging works that portray secession as a fight for white liberty, she argues instead that it was a conservative, antidemocratic movement to protect and perpetuate racial slavery. Sinha discusses some of the major sectional crises of the antebellum era--including nullification, the conflict over the expansion of slavery into western territories, and secession--and offers an important reevaluation of the movement to reopen the African slave trade in the 1850s. In the process she reveals the central role played by South Carolina planter politicians in developing proslavery ideology and the use of states' rights and constitutional theory for the defense of slavery. Sinha's work underscores the necessity of integrating the history of slavery with the traditional narrative of southern politics. Only by taking into account the political importance of slavery, she insists, can we arrive at a complete understanding of southern politics and the enormity of the issues confronting both northerners and southerners on the eve of the Civil War.

Book Synopsis Partisans of the Southern Press by : Carl R. Osthaus
Download or read book Partisans of the Southern Press written by Carl R. Osthaus and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl R. Osthaus examines the southern contribution to American Press history, from Thomas Ritchie's mastery of sectional politics and the New Orleans Picayune's popular voice and use of local color, to the emergence of progressive New South editors Henry Watterson, Francis Dawson, and Henry Grady, who imitated, as far as possible, the New Journalism of the 1880s. Unlike black and reform editors who spoke for minorities and the poor, the South's mainstream editors of the nineteenth century advanced the interests of the elite and helped create the myth of southern unity. The southern press diverged from national standards in the years of sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Addicted to editorial diatribes rather than to news gathering, these southern editors of the middle period were violent, partisan, and vindictive. They exemplified and defended freedom of the press, but the South's press was free only because southern society was closed. This work broadens our understanding of journalism of the South, while making a valuable contribution to southern history.
