Buchanan: Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, I do not propose this afternoon to be at all formal. As far as I can I wish to speak in a simple, humble and direct manner, and I wish to give, as far as possible, not other men's discoveries, but what I have myself seen, what I have myself been so fortunate as to discover, and what I think this audience will be the first public audience in the world to hear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel Key Words: Studied From the Original With Special Reference to Those Who Do Not Read Greek but of Equal Value to Those Who Do It is the aim of this book to aid in answering the question, What saith the Scriptures? When we discover what the Holy Scriptures really say, we are well along on the way toward their true interpretation. If we want to understand a message from the Lord, we must first understand the language of' that message. Truly the' Word of God is living and powerful, but we can draw upon its life and avail ourselves of its power only to such extent as we comprehend what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of its meaning. It is to help enlarge such comprehension that this little book has been prepared. It was the habit of Jesus and the apostles - and the Bereans, to search the Scriptures daily. But they had the obvious advantage over many of us in being able to read the Word in the languages in Which 'it was J originally written, and largely too in the languages in which they themselves spoke and taught. We are obliged to study the Bible through the medium of a translation - an imperfect medium, even when well done. For example, a given word in English may represent from two to ten different words in the Greek, and a given word in the Greek be rendered by. Half a dozen different words in English: Since in translation only one word or phrase can be used in a given place, the meaning of the original may be left ambiguous, or vague, or be given a slant that is misleading. More than this, words that are clear often lose much of the Wealth of their meaning through the, transfer of ideas to another language. It is to help supply our own deficiency in the knowledge of languages, to help remedy weaknesses inherent in translation, and to enrich the meaning of words, that this little work has been prepared. It is fitting to add here that I was led to see the need of this book by frequent inquiries, in person and by mail, on the meaning of words and passages in the original Greek, and by numerous requests that I prepare something of this kind as an aid to the Bible student who does not read Greek. It is the latter class that I have kept specially in mind, yet if I can judge by my own experience in preparing the manuscript, the Greek student will find it equally beneficial and usable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freer Gospels The Freer Gospels first claimed the attention of modern scholars in the autumn of 1906, when a Gizeh dealer showed it with other ancient Biblical manuscripts to Dr. Grenfell and Dr. Hunt in Cairo. The manuscript with its three companions was purchased on December 19, 1906, by Mr. Charles L. Freer, and was sent to America. At a meeting of archaeologists held in Chicago on December 30, 1907, it was announced and briefly discussed, by Professor Henry A. Sanders. The text of the manuscript, which Professor Gregory has designated W, has since been carefully collated by Professor Sanders with an Oxford edition (1880) of the Received Text. The limited currency of that text and particularly of that edition in this country, and probably also in England, and the fact that we are dealing not with a mediaeval cursive, but with an ancient uncial, make it seem desirable to put forth a collation with the text of Westcott and Hort, as the one most generally in use among English-speaking students. The appearance through the munificence of Mr. Freer of an excellent facsimile edition of the Freer Gospels and the distribution of this edition among leading libraries make such a collation easy, but not superfluous, since relatively few of those who feel an interest in the text of the manuscript will have convenient access to the facsimile edition, and few who do will have leisure for a continuous collation. How the new manuscript relates to Westcott and Hort is moreover what many students wish to know. To make the testimony of the Freer Gospels accessible to the widest possible circle of textual students, therefore, I have undertaken to provide a collation of its text with that of Westcott and Hort. I have sought to make this collation substantially complete; but mere itacisms, except in some proper names, and in some words where they may have a certain significance, I have disregarded, as well as Imam/179 for 'iwaiw;s and the habitual addition of v-movable to e'an', third singulars in 'e, and words in m. This is so constant that I have sought to record in a special note only W's failures to insert it where it might have stood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theo logy is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theo logian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of' everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'the Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love Revealed: Meditations on the Parting Words of Jesus With His Disciples in Chapter XIII., XIV., XV., XVI., XVII., Of the Gospel by John Nothing of all this. Having loved his own during the long years of their fellow-pilgrimage, he loved them unto the end. To them his thoughts were given. All his solicitude was for them. Every emotion of their hearts, every utterance of their lips, had for him the profoundest importance. They were his own. The angels are not his own in any such sense, and therefore his thoughts were now given, not to the angels, but to his disciples. If we would but know it, the preference given by Christ to the impure chil dren of earth, whom he yearned to purify, over the unfallen sons of God, was repeated hour by hour dur ing the whole of his life; and the triumph of his love was in the perseverance with which he maintained unto the last this preference, notwithstanding the new and sad revelations of their unloveliness. We are fully assured, that there is very much in the four Gospels which manifest the Divine perfections and distino tive beauties of each one, which has not yet been brought forth by those who have sought to explore their inexhaustible depths; that there is here a wide field for diligent research, and that those who will pursue this study, prayerfully, for themselves, will be richly rewarded for their pains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Gospel: An Exegetical and Practical Explanation So said the poet, wisely, of the symbolic teachings of the Gospel; and assuredly nowhere has divine Truth assumed a more win ning air, nowhere worn a more condescending yet conquering guise than in those tales told by a divine Teacher. And yet can it be said that their true and full meaning is easily seized? Have not their details and their general drift alike been from the beginning disputed and misunderstood? Has not human falli bility found herein room to stray and heretical obstinacy means for self-blinding? Nay, has not there hung round the parables from the beginning a peculiar and mysterious dispensation of obscurity? That seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand?1 In them, truly, are set forth the divine lore of the kingdom of Heaven, of God's fatherhood, of the Redemption, of the service of God, of man's duties on earth and destinies hereafter, in the most appealing and vivid form. Yet it is clear that Christ intended many things to be necessary ere all this become, for any one of us, actually the Word of Life. Qui potest capere, capiat. There must be docility of spirit, the beginnings (at least) of Faith, the desire for more light, and humility, - unless ye become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. There must be, normally, finding and acceptance of the enlightened and authorized ex pounder. To teach men through these means to lead to sal vation by external ministries of grace this is the strangely constant method of Providence.
