Book excerpt: The author reflects on the betrayal of Jesus and proposes a spiritual explanation for why Judas Iscariot from Judea was chosen to carry the label "traitor." This story describes apostle Judas Thaddeus' struggle with his name after Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus; it is narrated through an aspiring apostle, Barsabbas, who mistakenly believes he was overlooked for the job. Although much has been written about the 12 apostles, little is actually known about their personal lives. We do know that many were unlearned fishermen and they, no doubt, had ambitions, fears, and carnal desires similar to those of men throughout the ages. The message of this book is developed through the lives of three such men: Judas Iscariot, Judas Thaddeus, and Barsabbas. The author suggests that there is a little of Iscariot, Thaddeus, and Barsabbas in all of us. It is the conflict between their personalities which fuels the best and worst qualities of mankind; true power is not found through force but in those ideals exemplified by Barsabbas-forgiveness and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a billion dollars’ worth of art has been missing for thirty-five years. The most expensive art heist in the history of the world took place on March 18, 1990, in Boston. Priceless masterpieces were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. None of them have ever been seen again. GOING HOME follows the paintings, etchings, and other pieces that were stolen on a journey they might have taken. Forgeries of paintings and forgeries of one-hundred-dollar bills take center stage. Who will pay millions for what has been thrown into a trash can? The Camp Shoemaker reunion is in Arkansas this year, and the adventures continue. The Richardsons are building a twenty-first century resort in the idyllic woods near the Little Red River. One of the lost paintings has been found in River Springs…or has it? Is it a copy, or is it the real Vermeer that has not been seen since the last century? A backpack full of fentanyl appears, and then it disappear. Who will survive this madness?

Book excerpt: Like the Great Pyramid, mysteries surround the other pyramids as well as other features found at the Giza plateau in Egypt. For example: - Why does the second pyramid have two entrances, both off center, while the single entrance to the third pyramid is centered? - What was the purpose of the two lower chambers in the second pyramid? Moreover, why was the sarcophagus in this pyramid made to be wider than the passages that lead to the upper chamber? In a related matter, why were the bones of a bull placed in the sarcophagus? And why was the sarcophagus sunk into the floor up to its lid? - At the third pyramid, why were parts of a body dating to the Christian period wrapped in a coarse yellow woolen cloth and buried beneath three feet of rubbish in the upper chamber? - Why in the third pyramid was the lower vaulted chamber designed so that it would absorb both sound and light? - Out on the plateau, what was the purpose of the so-called trial passages? - On the south side of the Great Pyramid, why was an ancient boat dismantled and buried in a pit east of that pyramid's north-south axis? And what was stored in the other pit west of the axis? - Do the four so-called air shafts in the Great Pyramid link the three major pyramids together? And how are the compartments above the King's Chamber related to the end time? David Furlong, author of The Keys to the Temple, says "the whole of the Giza complex was based on a coherent design intended to portray a spiritual theme" (page 89). Volume 2 of Books Written in Stone: Enoch the Seer, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Last Days provides the evidence to support this thesis.

Book excerpt: Surely you remember Wi, a name especially chosen to fit our attention spans? The world-record kidnappee, nabbee, swipee, snatchee, hoisted so many times even he’s lost count? (How about those three times in five minutes effort? That takes rare raw talent, that does.) I mean, if it wasn’t for our Wi how many of these yabbers, yarns, shaggy dogs and yank-your-chain whoppers could I trot out for you? Even getting across one’s not easy when it’s always against the wind from people laughing in your face. No, really, without our Wi, where would all the odd-balls be, drowning their sorrows by ingesting the food in Dominic’s Eatery, swallowing whole mouthfuls without a thought for their own safety? Would any plate get the Wi wipe and come out miraculously unscathed from what had been just laid upon it? Without Wi, how many screwballs could have hired him to do all they’ve always wanted to do? God knows, and the Talls say ‘God knows’ because, if you take it that God made him in His own image, then maybe you’ve stumbled across the one time God spoke too soon. Okay, setting that aside, coming to you is a cast of Lankan characters – and you’d cast too -- and barf, and burp – if you had some of Dominic’s food inside you, let’s not kid ourselves. Not all of us have cast-iron guts and can absorb what could canonize you if you kept it down. And our Wi can’t help being White, either. Did he ever ask for the hoists he’s had to suffer, or complained about the lack of duty-of-care his kidnappers have shown him -- their kidnappee, after all? No. All he asked was a hideaway high above the stars so bright. At least he got that. And, though having to watchfully wait, at least he received the epiphs, too. With the epiphs, he could epiphicatedly dream, so I guess he had something going for him. And let’s not forget he’s Talls recorded as having said, ‘Just let me know if I’m breathing too much and I’ll stop’. Hey, what kidnappee or country like Australia gets a kidnappee so considerate? Is he a peach of a pooch, or what? ---------------------- Bill Reed is an Australian novelist, playwright and short-story writer with national awards for all three. He now lives in both Australia and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem many pilgrims came to Jerusalem. The translations in this book are of seventeen western accounts of pilgrimage, written between 1099 and 1185, and there are two additional accounts from eastern pilgrims, Abbot Daniel from Russia and John Phocas from Antioch. As a whole this collection shows the gradually developing way in which western Christians understood the Holy Places. Some early pilgrims depended on authorities, many of whom by 1099 were out-of-date. They tried to deliver the truth about the Holy Places and to be reticent about their own reactions. But the pilgrims who appear later in the collections made their own archaeological judgements, and were more free about their own reactions. Pilgrimage after 1099 was altered by the fact that by their victory over Jerusalem the Dome of the Rock fell into the Crusader's hands. Otherwise the differences of practice between eastern and western pilgrims were slight. Thus eastern pilgrims visited the Greek and western pilgrims the Latin monasteries. Western pilgrims had a different idea of the location of Emmaus, and before 1185 a western Way of the Cross was beginning to take shape. These were slight differences, and in general all Christian pilgrims, whether from east or west, visited the same Holy Places as they had during the preceding period. Most of the works in this collection were translated into English a century ago by the Palestine Pilgrim's Text Society. But these texts were produced separately as pamphlets, and lacked a general introduction. In this book therefore the texts are retranslated, sometimes from more accurate texts. In introducing the texts some valuable new evidence from archaeology has been used and enabled a new assessment of their dates.

Book excerpt: The eleventh book in this series, this text focuses on textual comments and believer edification of the gospel of Matthew. Although the text isn't focused on textual research of a theological exegesis, the commentary does try to bring the ideas and assertions made by the disciple Matthew in the days of the Messiah Jesus Christ in the nation of Israel. This book is handy for anyone who wants to read into commentary history as well as to get a good solid look at how the texts of Matthew apply to our lives.

Dunn examines in depth the major factors that shaped first-generation Christianity and beyond, exploring the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism, the Hellenization of Christianity, and responses to Gnosticism. He mines all the first- and second-century sources, including the New Testament Gospels, New Testament apocrypha, and such church fathers as Ignatius, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus, showing how the Jesus tradition and the figures of James, Paul, Peter, and John were still esteemed influences but were also the subject of intense controversy as the early church wrestled with its evolving identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long overshadowed by the apostle Paul, Peter has received increased scholarly attention of late. Building on that resurgence of interest, nineteen internationally prominent scholars of early Christian history examine and reassess the historical Peter and his significance in Christian texts from the first three centuries. Giving due attention to archaeological data and recent scholarship, the contributors offer a comprehensive view of Peter through analysis of both New Testament texts and later, noncanonical literature. Markus Bockmuehl concludes the volume by considering present-day questions about the role of Peter, popes, and church leadership.
