Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newberry Honour Award Winner & National Book Award Winner. Matt is six years old when he discovers that he is different from other children and other people. To most, Matt isn't considered a boy at all, but a beast, dirty and disgusting. But to El Patron, lord of a country called Opium, Matt is the guarantee of eternal life. El Patron loves Matt as he loves himself - for Matt is himself. They share the exact same DNA. As Matt struggles to understand his existence and what that existence truly means, he is threatened by a host of sinister and manipulating characters, from El Patron's power-hungry family to the brain-deadened eejits and mindless slaves that toil Opium's poppy fields. Surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards, escape is the only chance Matt has to survive. But even escape is no guarantee of freedom . . . because Matt is marked by his difference in ways that he doesn't even suspect. Praise for The House of Scorpions: 'It's a pleasure to read science fiction that's full of warm, strong characters... that doesn't rely on violence as the solution to complex problems of right and wrong. It's a pleasure to read.' Ursula K. LeGuin 'Fabulous' Diana Wynne Jones Also by Nancy Farmer: The Sea of Trolls Land of the Silver Apples The Islands of the Blessed The Lord of Opium

Book excerpt: Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, award-winning astronomy writer and popularizer, has been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Tales is the first modern guide to combine all the fascinating myths in one book, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the leading star atlases: Johann Bode’s Uranographia of 1801 and John Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis of 1729. This classic book, now in a revised and expanded edition, presents additional information on the constellations with new and enchanting illustrations. For anyone interested in the stars and classical mythology, for anyone who is an armchair astronomer, this is the perfect gift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some years ago it was my privilege to enjoy the acquaintance of Miss Frances Rolleston, of Keswick, and to carry on a correspondence with her with respect to her work, Mazzaroth: or, the Constellations. She was the first to create an interest in this important subject. Since then Dr. Seiss, of Philadelphia, has endeavoured to popularize her work on the other side of the Atlantic; and brief references have been made to the subject in such books as Moses and Geology, by Dr. Kinns, and inPrimeval Man; but it was felt, for many reasons, that it was desirable to make another effort to set forth, in a more complete form, the witness of the stars to prophetic truth, so necessary in these last days. To the late Miss Rolleston, however, belongs the honour of collecting a mass of information bearing on this subject; but, published as it was, chiefly in the form of notes, unarranged and unindexed, it was suited only for, but was most valuable to, the student. She it was who performed the drudgery of collecting the facts presented by Albumazer, the Arab astronomer to the Caliphs of Grenada, 850 a.d.; and the Tables drawn up by Ulugh Beigh, the Tartar prince and astronomer, about 1650 a.d., who gives the Arabian Astronomy as it had come down from the earliest times. Modern astronomers have preserved, and still have in common use, the ancient names of over a hundred of the principal stars which have been handed down; but now these names are used merely as a convenience, and without any reference to their significance. This work is an attempt to popularize this ancient information, and to use it in the interests of truth. For the ancient astronomical facts and the names, with their signification, I am, from the very nature of the case, indebted, of course, to all who have preserved, collected, and handed them down; but for their interpretation I am alone responsible. It is for the readers to judge how far my conclusions are borne out by the evidence; and how far the foundation of our hopes of coming glory are strengthened by the prophecies which have been written in the stars of heaven, as well as in the Scriptures of truth.

Book excerpt: An astrological guide to deepening your romantic connection—or finding the love of your life. Carolyne Faulkner knows the number-one reason her clients seek her out to consult the stars: love. After all, we are made of stardust, and understanding the cosmos can provide critical insight into our lives, our well-being, and matters of the heart. This unique guide explains how each sign matches up with the others, with the pros and pitfalls of each, and offers interactive journaling prompts to allow each reader to create a wholly personal road map to understanding themselves and their unions in romance, family, and friendship. There is no question that certain pairings cause sparks to crackle, while others grow quietly into a relationship that will last forever. Each combination has its challenges, too, but Faulkner reassures readers that the idea of “incompatibility” is a myth, and if your partner seems to come from another planet, it might just take a little more empathy and hard work to keep the romance alive. Learn what it looks like when a particular match flows well or not so well, and how the planets combine to play a role in both of your charts. Faulkner’s Dynamic Astrology™ approach offers a tried-and-tested framework to the signs—how harmonious each match is likely to be, and, more important, how to build a foundation for a forever love.

Book excerpt: The ebook of the stunning new novel from the bestselling author of SHIVER, LINGER AND FOREVER. Stay alive, stay astride, stay out of the water... Every November, the Scorpio Races are run beneath the chalk cliffs of Skarmouth. Thousands gather to watch the horses and the sea that washes the blood from the sand. The mounts are capaill uisce: savage water horses. There are no horses more beautiful, more fearless, more deadly. To race them can be suicide but the danger is irresistible. Sean Kendrick knows the dangers of the capaill uisce. With one foot in the ocean and one on land, he is the only man on the island capable of taming the beasts. He races to prove something both to himself and to the horses. Puck Connolly enters the races to save her family. But the horse she rides is an ordinary little mare, just as Puck is an ordinary girl. When Sean sees Puck on the beach he doesn't think she belongs. He doesn't realize his fate will become entwined in hers. They both enter the Races hoping to change their lives. But first they'll have to survive.

Book excerpt: These days you see so many books on zodiac signs being published that are not only completely boring but are also filled with stuff that is nothing more than cotton candy fluff with regard to astrology. These books mostly focus on trade or the commercial value of the text rather than authenticity. Through Scorpio The Deepwater, the author will mostly not distinguish between Scorpio women, men, or birth charts. Dear Scorpio, the intensity level of your energy varies, other than that your soul does understand time and is not defined by time or by gender. Even the stars care nothing for human ideas of gender. Therefore, Sami does not accept the idea that different genders express different aspects of their signs. The author wants only to capture the real essence of the Scorpio and reinforce of people own knowledge about the sign. This book is an awareness step made to the larger audience to understand how deep and passionate scorpions are into everything that they lay their hands upon. Sami is bringing the general description about Scorpio alike in manner within or wherever their sun is sitting in their chart. Scorpios are some of the most captivating people that you will ever come across in your life, yet at the same time they are some of the most mysterious individuals as well. They have an incredibly powerful presence that you can certainly not ignore under any circumstances. Regardless of all that, Scorpios have earned a bad reputation over the years, being called as some of the strongest personalities to handle. All the mentioned above makes this book incredibly important to all people who need to learn about the things that they may need to know in order to get the most out of their relationship with your Scorpio .Thus, do not wait too long. Take all the help you can get and find the perfect harmony between you and your Scorpio.
