Book Synopsis Real Knockouts by : Martha McCaughey
Download or read book Real Knockouts written by Martha McCaughey and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of women's self-defense culture and its relationship to feminism. I was once a frightened feminist. So begins Martha McCaughey's odyssey into the dynamic world of women's self- defense, a culture which transforms women involved with it and which has equally profound implications for feminist theory and activism. Unprecedented numbers of American women are learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. Sales of mace and pepper spray have skyrocketed. Some 14 million women own handguns. From behind the scenes at gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering Cardio Combat, and in padded attacker courses like Model Mugging, Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse. And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and women physically fighting back, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new brand of feminism.
Book Synopsis Small Dojo Big Profits by : Mike Massie
Download or read book Small Dojo Big Profits written by Mike Massie and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, Small Dojo Big Profits has guided martial arts instructors through the risky yet highly rewarding process of starting and running a highly successful and profitable martial art school. Eschewing the conventional wisdom that says you must have a huge school with 300 or more students to be financially successful, the author instead shows you how to take on less risk while working smarter and not harder by running a lean, mean, efficient martial arts studio operation. Author Mike Massie has started three successful martial arts studios from scratch, and has the distinction of opening his first studio with no start-up capital, zero credit, and in a town where he was a complete stranger. Yet, he was able to go from teaching in part-time locations to running his own full-time studio in under a year, and he achieved this while staying in profit from month one. The process he followed is the same one this book is based upon, and this updated version of Small Dojo Big Profits also draws on the author's experience in starting and growing two more successful studios during the recent mortgage crisis and economic recession. A common sense martial arts school start-up and business operations manual, this completely updated version of the classic martial arts business guide is perfect for anyone who wants to maintain their integrity while building a successful martial art school. If you're looking for the best source of complete information for starting, launching, growing, and running a martial art school from scratch, this is it.

Book Synopsis In Defense of Witches by : Mona Chollet
Download or read book In Defense of Witches written by Mona Chollet and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mona Chollet's In Defense of Witches is a “brilliant, well-documented” celebration (Le Monde) by an acclaimed French feminist of the witch as a symbol of female rebellion and independence in the face of misogyny and persecution. Centuries after the infamous witch hunts that swept through Europe and America, witches continue to hold a unique fascination for many: as fairy tale villains, practitioners of pagan religion, as well as feminist icons. Witches are both the ultimate victim and the stubborn, elusive rebel. But who were the women who were accused and often killed for witchcraft? What types of women have centuries of terror censored, eliminated, and repressed? Celebrated feminist writer Mona Chollet explores three types of women who were accused of witchcraft and persecuted: the independent woman, since widows and celibates were particularly targeted; the childless woman, since the time of the hunts marked the end of tolerance for those who claimed to control their fertility; and the elderly woman, who has always been an object of at best, pity, and at worst, horror. Examining modern society, Chollet concludes that these women continue to be harrassed and oppressed. Rather than being a brief moment in history, the persecution of witches is an example of society’s seemingly eternal misogyny, while women today are direct descendants to those who were hunted down and killed for their thoughts and actions. With fiery prose and arguments that range from the scholarly to the cultural, In Defense of Witches seeks to unite the mythic image of the witch with modern women who live their lives on their own terms.

Book Synopsis In Defense of the Princess by : Jerramy Fine
Download or read book In Defense of the Princess written by Jerramy Fine and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's no secret that most girls, at some point, love all things princess: the poofy dresses, the plastic tiaras, the color pink. Even grown-up women can't get enough of royal weddings and royal gossip. Yet critics claim the princess dream sets little girls up to be weak and submissive, and allows grown women to indulge in fantasies of rescue rather than hard work and self-reliance. Enter Jerramy Fine -- an unabashed feminist who is proud of her life-long princess obsession and more than happy to defend it. Through her amusing life story and in-depth research, Fine makes it clear that feminine doesn't mean weak, pink doesn't mean inferior, and girliness is not incompatible with ambition. From 9th century Cinderella to modern-day Frozen, from Princess Diana to Kate Middleton, from Wonder Woman to Princess Leia, Fine valiantly assures us that princesses have always been about power, not passivity. And those who love them can still be confident, intelligent women. Provocative, insightful, but also witty and personal, In Defense of the Princess empowers girls, women, and parents to dream of happily ever after without any guilt or shame.

Book Synopsis Perceptions of Female Offenders by : Brenda Russell
Download or read book Perceptions of Female Offenders written by Brenda Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female offenders are often perceived as victims who commit crimes as a self-defense mechanism or as criminal deviants whose actions strayed from typical ‘womanly’ behavior. Such cultural norms for violence exist in our gendered society and there has been scholarly debate about how male and female offenders are perceived and how this perception leads to differential treatment in the criminal justice system. This debate is primarily based upon theories associated with stereotypes and social norms and how these prescriptive norms can influence both public and criminal justice response. Scholars in psychology, sociology, and criminology have found that female offenders are perceived differently than male offenders and this ultimately leads to differential treatment in the criminal justice system. This interdisciplinary book provides an evidence based approach of how female offenders are perceived in society and how this translates to differential treatment within the criminal justice system and explores the ramifications of such differences. Quite often perceptions of female offenders are at odds with research findings. This book will provide a comprehensive evidence-based review of the research that is valuable to laypersons, researchers, practitioners, advocates, treatment providers, lawyers, judges, and anyone interested in equality in the criminal justice system.
