Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 7 The accompanying volume represents the practical experience and research of the author and those about him, for a period of nearly half a century. In his work he has not sought to create something that was his own so much as he has to develop something of value to railroads and, incidentally, to the commerce of the world. While he has given the subject his best thought all his life, he has at the same time sought to supplement his knowledge and at best limited experience, with that of others. In this he has been, owing to the kindness of those about him and those generally connected with railroads, more fortunate than could have been expected. It is on these grounds that he has written the book and now ventures to offer it to the public. The first of the two books that make up this volume explains briefly the principles that surround the buying and handling of railway supplies. The subject is one of supreme importance to railroad corporations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Out of the necessities of their lives many of the devices in use today originated. The greatest, however, it is probable, is our alphabet. The cuneiform and pictorial writings used by surrounding nations, while answering the purposes of monumental writing or a re stricted business, were not adequate to the ex tended commerce of the tnicians. They re quired some simple and expeditious means of writing up their accounts and of communicating easily with persons at a distance; a method at once cheap, simple, easily learned and capable of particularizing the wants of trade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 12 Naturally, in my books, practical questions that concern the operations of railroads take prece dence of all others. But those who would comprehend the subject in its entirety must understand the principles of political economy that permeate it throughout as well as more practical details. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 15 It was the impossibility of separating the duties of particular departments 'oi the service and describing them apart that first constrained me to take up the subject as a whole. I started out to describe particular branches of the serv ice, but quickly found that their connection with the others was so close as to render a de scription of the whole necessary. Thus I was led reluctantly and contrary to my original in tention to take up the subject in its entirety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 2 Few men have the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the minutiae of railway affairs in all their phases. This renders books of reference both necessary and valuable. The employer, the employe and the community are alike benefited by them. It was this thought that suggested the accompanying volumes. They treat of specific things, but do not reflect the methods of any particular property or organization. Polybius, in describing the Roman constitution, says if the reader finds the matter in his work to be trustworthy, he must assume the omissions to be intentional and unimportant. I cannot say this of the accompanying volumes. To treat exhaustively the science of railroads would fill a library. I do not attempt anything so elaborate, but seek only to point out essential principles and practices. On almost every railroad we find manuals in a more or less advanced state, but nowhere an attempt to explain the principles which govern as well as the rules and regulations which are to be observed. Download or read book Railway Equipment written by Marshall Monroe Kirkman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Equipment: Forming One of the Twelve Volumes of the Revised and Enlarged Edition of the Science of Railways I do not set out to write an exhaustive account of railway affairs, but rather to discuss those things which every railroad man may reasonably desire to form a part of his knowledge, if not of his experience. In the early history of railroads ignorance was general. This is no longer the case. Railway men now recognize that they must not only know thoroughly the particular work assigned them, but have more than a cur sory knowledge of the duties of others. No man's experience is, in itself, wide enough to command this knowledge, and it is the object of this work, the result of forty years' practical experience and extended research, in some measure to supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 3 of 12: Operation of Trains Of the facilities of the ancients for trans porting travelers historians tell us very little. Even Herodotus, that most voluble, curious and amiable of gossips, is silent. He describes his journeys, the people he visited and heard about, but says nothing as to how he traveled from place to place. And this notwithstanding his voyages necessitated the most varied transporta tion; that peculiar to sea and river, desert and highway, mountain and valley. He tells us, with a relish that time can never dull, of the habits of the people he saw and heard about; their idiosyncracies, foibles and weaknesses - especially their weaknesses - but not a word about his means Of transportation.
