These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Science of Human Nature: Our usual inability to make such predictions in the case of human beings is not because human beings are not subject to the law of cause and effect, it is not that their acts are due to chance, but that the factors involved are usually many, and it is difficult for us to find out all of them. ...Putting these two facts together-(1) that the higher types of mind are found to-day only in the higher types of animals, and (2) that a gradual development of animal forms is shown by the remains in the earth's crust-the conclusion is forced upon us that mind has passed through many stages of development from the appearance of life upon the earth to the present time. ...The main point to notice in all this is that when two individuals having diverse characteristics are crossed, the characteristics do not fuse and disappear ultimately, but that the two characteristics are transmitted in equal ratio, and each will appear in succeeding generations, and will appear pure, just as if it had not been crossed with something different. ...Most of the experiments have been with lower animals and with plants, but recent experiments and statistical studies show that Mendelism is an important factor in human heredity, in such characteristics as color of hair and eyes and skin, partial color blindness, defects of eye, ear, and other important organs. ...If the mind is dependent in every feature on the body with its sense organs, this must give to this body and its sense organs an importance in our thought and scheme of things that they did not have before.

It is written to aid parents, teachers, and pastors, in their work of character-building; incidentally, too, to aid each indi vidual to build himself. It grew out of a practical need, and was written wholly with a practical end in view. Some years ago Dr. J. H. Vincent designed, as a part of his Chautauqua University, a Chautauqua School of The ology. Its object was not to supersede the thorough courses of biblical and theological study pursued in the seminaries, but to supplement them; to aid pastors in pursuing their studies after they had already entered on their parish work, and to enable laymen and others, Who were engaged in ministerial or quasi ministerial labor, to equip themselves more thoroughly for their work. He proposed to incorporate in the curriculum of this Chau tanqua School of Theology 3. Department'of Human Nature, the object of which should be to aid the stu dent in studying man, individually and socially; human nature in history, in fiction, in the parish, and in society, thus enabling him to deal more wisely, because more truly scientifically, with the problems of individual and social life. Dr. Vincent asked me to take charge of this department, to create and to cultivate it. With much misgiving, I undertook the task; moved thereto partly by a warm personal affection and esteem for Dr. Vincent, partly by a great respect for the work which he is doing, and partly by a special interest in this particular department. Consciousness has been considered with reference to its three grand elements, and every thing has been enumerated that was calculated to throw any light on its complicated and most interesting phenomena. It appeared self-evident that certain physical, moral, and intellectual states, were more conducive to virtue and happiness than others; that there was a close connexion between them, and that the whole, might be successively elucidated, beginning with the most elementary, and ending with the most complex. It likewise seemed that to execute this; to shew the mutual dependance of these states, and the necessity of improving each, to secure the joint perfection of all, might be of some service to the cause of humanity: that religion and morality might be promoted by demonstrating, independent of other sanctions and considerations, that there was a natural bond of obligation tending to the maintenance of our well-being, which could not be infringed without the certain contingency of misery, evil, and disease. Our position on earth our expectations here and hereafter, and the detail of our various duties, are fully adequate to occupy the attention of the most zealous inquirer. It has not been thought requisite to attempt any formal demonstration of the being of a God, but it was conceived imperatively so, to enlarge on his boundless wisdom and power, and to dwell upon every practicable illustration of his Divine Providence.
