Book excerpt: The first edition of this resource guide for educators on how to teach students about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was published in 1986. Since then, basic facts about the transmission and prevention of the AIDS virus have not changed substantially. The terminologies about the disease, however, have changed and the changing terminologies (AIDS, ARC, HIV infection) are explained in the preface of this third edition. The first section of the book explains why teenagers and young adults need to be taught about AIDS and gives suggestions for using the curriculum. Methods and concepts for teaching high school students about AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are discussed and basic information on AIDS/HIV is provided. Safe and unsafe sexual activities are differentiated and a sample lecture is included. The second section provides seven teaching plans which present different approaches to teaching AIDS in the classroom. Most plans are designed to be taught in a single-session class or expanded to fill two or three sessions. The first of the plans is a basic AIDS unit and the other six are designed to be appropriate for use in different disciplines. Also included is a supplement on how the AIDS virus infects the immune system. The next section contains teaching materials, including six worksheets and an objective test. The final section contains background materials, including supplementary teaching tips, AIDS information sources, and a glossary of terms. (NB)

Book excerpt: Teaching AIDS begins with a discussion of how teachers can create an environment of support for an AIDS education programme. Recognizing that AIDS education must differ for students of different age groups, the author presents tailored, age-appropriate content - what and how teachers should communicate AIDS information to young children, older children and teenage students.Teaching AIDS also addresses actual methods teachers can use to influence their students' attitudes and behaviour by helping them to recognize problem situations in which risks might arise, and presenting them with the actual skills they need to protect themselves in such situations.
Book Synopsis HIV/AIDS Education for Students with Special Needs by : David A. Birch
Download or read book HIV/AIDS Education for Students with Special Needs written by David A. Birch and published by American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance. This book was released on 1995 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is designed to help teachers develop and implement HIV/AIDS education programs for students with special education needs. It presents specific suggestions for adapting curricula and teaching styles to meet the needs of individual students. The introduction discusses why students with special needs should receive HIV/AIDS education and what barriers to that education exist. It notes the elements necessary for quality HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. The second component provides ideas for adapting instructions for students with special needs (e.g., determining the appropriate program, using a multisensory approach, and using task analysis). It includes adaptation strategies, a quick reference, and an HIV/AIDS checklist. The third component offers teaching activities with suggestions for adaptations to accommodate students with specific disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and visual impairment). The fourth component offers a list of references and resources on HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. (SM).

Book Synopsis Humanizing Pedagogy Through HIV and AIDS Prevention by : American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
Download or read book Humanizing Pedagogy Through HIV and AIDS Prevention written by American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the power of educators to serve as HIV and AIDS prevention agents. The definitive text represents the work of a distinguished panel of teacher educators and health scientists who identify core information and skills effective educators of HIV and AIDS prevention should learn as they are prepared to attend to the academic and human needs of students. It assigns to teachers, in the US and abroad, the novel role of prevention agents, given their extraordinary ability to access and affect young people -- to influence their behavior. Humanizing Pedagogy considers the social, economic, racial, gender and other variables that impact the prevention of HIV and AIDS. The authors collectively assert that the process of preventing HIV and AIDS, when it considers historic and social context, can compel educators to serve not only as practitioners of knowledge, but as community agents of health and well being. Attending to HIV and AIDS issues advances the capacity and ability of educators to see and attend to the complete learner. Humanizing Pedagogy is a single volume resource for educators, in the US and abroad, interested in attending to the whole needs of the learner-and saving lives.
