It is useful to the hasty critic who wishes to avoid the trouble of reading at all, and to the more serious student who wishes to have the clue to the author's speculations put into his hands at the earliest possible period. I should be glad to be useful to both classes, to save some readers the trouble of getting through more than a couple of paragraphs, and to point out to others what is the kind of result which they may expect from a perusal of the whole work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics, Vol. 1: General Ethics Of modern Scholastic writers the author is most in debted to Professors Meyer and Cathrein, to Rev. Joseph Rickaby, Taparelli, Schififini, and Rev. Dr. Walter mcdonald, Maynooth College, whose treatises on Ethics have been of immense help to him in the preparation of his work. His most grateful thanks are due to the Rev. John Waters, b.a., of Clonliffe College, for his kindness in reading this book, and for very many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Father Waters' wide and minute acquaintance with the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas was always at the author's disposal in the difficult task of discovering and comparing the various references made by St. Thomas to any special Ethical question, references often occurring in places very wide apart, and under unpromising titles - titles apparently outside the, subject under discussion. Thanks are also due to those gentlemen who so kindly undertook the tedious and un interesting task of proof-reading, and to many others also for help given of various kinds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics as Based on the Science of Knowledge To anyone who obtains a first and superficial View of the history of philosophy it seems absurd to think of introspection as affording anything approaching the character of scientific system. There seems to be endless difference of\ Opinion. Every thinker, however, arrives at convictions of his own, although he combats the convictions of his fellows. Those who attain to any mastery of the critical system of Kant, with its higher order of introspection, reach a series of necessary truths belonging within the sphere of rational psychology. Any candid student of the History of Philosophy, who has given much time to understand the different systems, will testify that the agreements of these thinkers are numerous, and of such a character as to demonstrate the claims made for the scientific character of the higher introspection. In so far as the amateur follows the mathematical demonstrations of Newton or Leibnitz, he is forced into agreement; he sees the insight of the mathematical author he is studying. So it is in the higher introspection: sufficient care and attention will discover to the reader the philosophical necessity which the insight of a Kant or a Fichte had attained. But just as there comes a point in the study of mathe maties where the mind of the student stops before a realm of unexplored quantity, so there comes a place in philosophical introspection where the student stops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics: An Elementary System of Theoretical and Practical Morality It has been the controlling design in the preparation of this work simply to introduce to ethical studies. After a careful analysis of an act of duty by which the essential constituents of duty are ascertained, the science is unfolded in the light of this analysis, with logical exactness, into a full presentation of its principles and truths in their due relations to one another - into a well-grounded, comprehensive, and organic system of theoretical and practical morality. The elementary character of the work has precluded the introduction of the historical and critical discussion, by which ethical literature is so generally characterized. The peculiarities of the treatise are to be found mainly in the analysis of the concrete act of duty which furnishes the fundamental principles of ethical science; in the systematic development and arrangement of these principles; in their application to the particulars of ethical practice; and the more full and detailed presentation of the practical part of ethics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Moral Science Undoubtedly, if ethical facts are considered from the outside, objectively, and in their relation to other social facts, they seem to belong to the same category, and consequently to be objects of science as they are. But so long as they are manifested subjectively in consciousness under the form of duties, remorse, feelings of blame, praise, etc., they possess an entirely different character. They seem to relate exclusively to action, and to depend solely on principles of practice. Oi the two conceptions the first is unusual, the second universally received. It is not less familiar to philosophy than to common sense, and has never shocked any one. The other is proper to scientific sociology which puts forth as a principle that ethical facts are social facts, and which concludes that the same method applies to one as to the other. It nearly always awakes a feeling of instinctive distrust in those who are not accus tomed_to look at things in that manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Ethics HE complaint which is made against meta physics - that it accomplishes nothing - may perhaps as justly be made against the science of Ethics. Men have thought much upon ethical problems, but those problems still remain, for the most part, unsolved. There are still many ethi cal schools, and, though the ground of the conflict has Shifted, the conflict has not ceased. But there is still much hope that this strife may be brought to an end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Science: A Compendium of Ethics The first division, entitled The Theory of Ethics, gives an account of the questions or points brought into discus sion, and handles at length the two of greatest prominence, the Ethical Standard, and the Moral Faculty. The second division - On The Ethical Systems - is a full detail of all the systems, ancient and modern, by conjoined Abstract and Summary. With few exceptions, an abstract is made of each author's exposition of his own theory, the fulness being measured by relative importance; While, for better comparing and remembering the several theories, they are summarized at the end, on a uniform plan. The connection of Ethics With Psychology is necessarily intimate; the leading ethical controversies involve a refer ence to mind, and can be settled only by a more thorough understanding of mental processes. Although the present volume is properly a continuation of the Manual of Psychology and the History of Philosophy, recently published, and contains occasional references to that treatise, it may still be perused as an independent work on the Ethical Doctrines and Systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Study of Ethics The study of conduct which is here offered to students and teachers of philosophy was begun with the intention of furnishing simply a plain statement of the existing ethical' situation, by which I mean an analysis of the moral problem and a definition of the several types of ethical theory. But it was found impossible to make a plain state ment without adopting a point of view for the definition of the problem and the theories in question. And in the search for a satisfactory point of view I have been led to a more or less independent reconstruction of the situation as a whole. In a study like ethics, where nothing can be uttered which has not been in a measure foreshadowed, it is difficult to know how far one has succeeded in really contributing to the discussion; yet I hope that the following pages may be found not only useful to students beginning the study but of interest to those already familiar with its problems. An Objection is sometimes taken to the application of the term 'science' to such studies as these. It is said that a Science must necessarily have some department of actual existence for its subject-matter: and. There is no doubt that the term Ethical Science might, according to usage, denote studies that deal with the actually existent: viz. Either the department of Psychology that deals with pleasures and pains, desires and volitions, moral sentiments and judgments, as actual phenomena of individual human minds; or the department of Sociology dealing with similar phenomena, as exhibited by the larger organizations of which individual human beings are ele ments. We Observe, however, that comparatively few persons pursue these studies from pure curiosity, in order merely to ascertain what actually exists, has existed, or will exist in time. Most men wish not only to understand human action, but also to regulate it; they apply the ideas 'good' and 'bad, ' 'right' and 'wrong, ' to the conduct or institutions which they describe; and thus pass, as I should say, from the point of View. Of Psychology or Sociology to the point of View of Ethics or Politics. It is true that the mutual implication Of the two kinds of study is, on any theory, very close and complete, though the precise nature and extent of their connexion is. This work is intended to throw some additional light on the topic of morality. For Ethics is our theme, and Ethics is the science of morality. And if any detail of thought has a vital bear ing on man's destiny, if any branch of study helps shape his life, that detail of thought is suggested by Ethics, morality is that study. Ethics is the science of putting order in man's free acts; and, when you reflect that all sin, and much trouble, and hell itself are only varying phases of disorder, it must be evident that this science, theoretically mastered and sys tematically reduced to practice, could effect a revolution in the world. And the revolutionists would be hailed as the Emancipators Of mankind. They would go down in history, and they do go down in history as the supremest benefactors of our race. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of a Study of Ethics: An Inaugural Lecture Then, as everyone knows, the spirit of our age is scientific. The characteristic of Science is patient, thorough, systematic enquiry. Science needs no apology for its existence. It has established itself by doing its work, thus enforcing a lesson on the value of acting out our convictions if we wish others to believe in them. The in uence of scientific thought and literature is felt by the student before he enters the university, and no one can take a university training without becoming more or less familiar with scientific methods. Since Bacon wrote his Instauration of the Sciences and exposed the various that hinder the attainment of truth, authority has been discredited in science. One of the first things a student of science learns to do is to mistrust his previous opinions. In many enquiries they appear to him as mere prejudices, preventing him from seeing the truth and giving an impartial decision. We started with the assumption that we were to exclude all critical investigation of Ethics, and employ only the dogmatic method. But, as we have seen, the other in uences that we have enumerated all con cur in destroying the student's respect for the dogmatic method. The chapter on Conscience is, as I suppose, but little more than a development of his ideas on the same subject. How much more I owe to this incomparable wri ter, I know not. As it was the study of his ser mons on human nature, that first turned my at tention to this Subject, there are, doubtless, many trains of thought which I have derived from him, but which I have not been able to trace to their source, as they have long since become incorpo rate% with my own reflections. The article on the abbath, as is stated in the text, is derived chiefly from the tract of Mr. J. J. Gurney, on the same subject. Entertaining those views of the Sacred Scriptures, which I have expressed in the work itself, it is scarcely necessary to add here, that] consider them the great source of moral truth; and that a system of ethics will be true, just in proportion as it. Develops their meaning. To do this has been my object; and to have, in ever so humble a manner, accomplished it, I shall consider as the greatest possible success.
