Book excerpt: In this influential work, Otto Willmann explores the social and historical dimensions of education. He argues that education is not simply a matter of imparting knowledge and skills, but is deeply embedded in the social and cultural contexts in which it takes place. This book offers a valuable perspective on the sociology of education and the role of education in shaping society. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Felix Marie Kirsch and Otto Willmann explore the ways in which education reflects and shapes the broader social and historical context in which it takes place. Drawing on insights from sociology, psychology, and philosophy, the authors argue that true understanding of education requires an understanding of its social and historical context. Whether you are a teacher, a student, or simply interested in the study of education, The Science of Education is an essential work that will transform the way you think about this critical topic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Education, Vol. 1 of 2: In Its Sociological and Historical Aspects In his latest Report the President of Columbia University, Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, makes the following confession: "For a quarter century past, American educational practice has been steadily losing its hold upon guiding principle and has, therefore, increasingly come to float upon the tide of mere opinion, without standards, without purpose and without insight." Any one familiar with recent educational history will bear out the truth of this statement. Hence the writer ventures to think that The Science of Education by the late Dr. Otto Willmann, now made accessible to English readers, has a mission for our day and our country, since it offers those guiding principles of which American education stands in sore need. Dr. Willmann acts on the principle that the history of education must be our guide in educational matters. Whatever has stood the test of the ages, bids fair to prove of value in the future also. The present volume undertakes to ascertain from the history of education, what is the basis of our culture and civilization and what must, consequently, ever remain the essence of our courses of study. This volume is probably the best defence extant of what may be called the "ars educandi perennis." But Dr. Willmann is not a blind worshipper of past glory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology contains selected papers from the 'Science as Culture' conference held at Lake Como, and Pavia University Italy, 15-19 September 1999. The conference, attended by about 220 individuals from thirty countries, was a joint venture of the International History, Philosophy and Science Teaching Group (its fifth conference) and the History of Physics and Physics Teaching Division of the European Physical Society (its eighth conference). The magnificient Villa Olmo, on the lakeshore, provided a memorable location for the presentors of the 160 papers and the audience that discussed them. The conference was part of local celebrations of the bicentenary of Alessandro Volta's creation of the battery in 1799. Volta was born in Como in 1745, and for forty years from 1778 he was professor of experimental physics at Pavia University. The conference was fortunate to have had the generous financial support of the Italian government's Volta Bicentenary Fund, Lombardy region, Pavia University, Italian Research Council, and Kluwer Academic Publishers. The papers included here, have or will be, published in the journal Science & Education, the inaugural volume (1992) of which was a landmark in the history of science education publication, because it was the first journal in the field devoted to contributions from historical, philosophical and sociological scholarship. Clearly these 'foundational' disciplines inform numerous theoretical, curricular and pedagogical debates in science education. Contemporary Concerns The reseach promoted by the International and European Groups, and by the journal, is central to science education programmes in most areas of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Social History of Educational Studies and Research examines the development of the study of education in the UK in its broader educational, social and political context since its early beginnings in the first part of the twentieth century. By providing a historical analysis of the contested growth of the field this book examines the significant contribution that has been made by institutions of higher education, journals, text books, conferences, centres, and academic societies. It discusses the problems and opportunities of the field, and its prospects for survival and adaptation to current changes in the decades ahead. The work draws on documentary sources, social network analysis, and interviews with leading figures from across the field. This book highlights international influences on the development of educational studies and research in the UK, its role in the growing internationalisation of the field as a whole, and also comparisons and contrasts with the nature of the field elsewhere. It relates the development to the wider social, political and economic changes affecting higher education in general and educational studies and research in particular. It addresses the historical development of disciplines in higher education institutions and the nature, extent and limitations of interdisciplinarity. A Social History of Educational Studies and Research discuss the problems and opportunities facing the study of education today, and its prospects of adapting to changes in the decades ahead. It is a distinctive and original analysis of educational studies and research that provides the first comprehensive study of its type.
