Book excerpt: In one hundred case studies, the experience of 40 years of surgery is summarized in this collection of hand drawings made by the author. From a multitude of his drawings, cases with interesting diagnoses or especially elaborate drawings were selected by the author and presented in combination with a description of the case history and often with radiographs of the individual case. A large part of the book treats visceral surgery, including the gastrointestinal tract and its glands. Besides, vascular surgery and thorax surgery are covered.

Book excerpt: A surgeon shares true stories of life, death, and the human body in an essay collection that “will nail you to your chair” (Saturday Review). With settings ranging from the operating theater to a Korean ambulance, and topics as varied as the disposition of a corpse and the author’s own childhood, these nineteen captivating, wry, and intimate vignettes offer a poignant examination of health, humanity, and, of course, mortality. Sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous, the essays offer a physician’s viewpoint that goes beyond the medical to also consider the most meaningful issues and questions we face, whether as doctors or patients, cared for or caregiver. Praised by Kirkus Reviews as “an impressive display of knowledge and art, magic and mystery,” Mortal Lessons is a classic reflection on the human body and the human experience, and will resonate with readers for generations to come.

In other cases, the arteries and capillaries of a tract of tissue being thus plugged by embola, the blood in the veins leading l'rom the part will coagulate; and this coagulation, spreading into veins beyond the part primarily affected, will cause thrombosis of some larger veins. Should a piece of the thrombus projecting into a vein become detached, it will be carried on in the circulation until arrested at some point, as in the lungs, or, being arrested in and obstructing a venous trunk, it may give rise to ao-called phlebitis. Book excerpt: A guide to "when to" and "what to" rather than "how to," this book provides evidence-based surgical reviews to provide credible answers to age-old surgical management questions. The management issues presented are oriented toward interventions and use evidence-based techniques to assess the safety and efficacy of new treatments and rehabilitative or preventative interventions. Each chapter is organized around the key questions essential to delineating the current status of evidence related to the subject reviewed. Publications from the past decade are cited that provide Level I and II evidence using the Oxford scale. Throughout Elective General Surgery, careful assessment of the validity of intervention studies and the strength of the evidence that they provide underlies the choices of cited publications. The information presented in this volume guides the scientific surgeon in providing state-of-the-art care and in optimizing the use of medical resources without losing sight of the need to address the unique needs of individual patients.
