Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From foreword: Few psychological variables affecting the lives of children are given as much emphasis by mental health professionals and the general public as self-esteem. Psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan viewed the concept of self as the "bedrock of the human personality," and a deterioration in self-esteem has long been associated by both clinicians and researchers with a wide range of difficulties - from depression and delinquency to eating disorders and school failure. The message has not been lost on parents and teachers, who constantly search for ways to improve the motivation and well-being of their children by helping them enhance their self-concept. As one popular book on the subject tells its readers, self-esteem is no less than the "mainspring that slates every child for success or failure as a human being." Careful observations of the child tend to reinforce the validity of such views-and thus the importance of this unusually rich volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does success in school protect teenagers from drug use? Does drug use impair scholastic success? This book tackles a key issue in adolescent development and health - the education-drug use connection. The authors examine the links and likely causal connections between educational experiences, delinquent behavior, and adolescent use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. The book uses data from the University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future project. It focuses on a large and nationally representative sample of 8th grade students in the United States who were initially surveyed in 1991-1993 and then followed over the vitally important developmental period between ages 14 and 22. The volume uses a variety of statistical analysis techniques, and the findings can be understood by individuals with limited, as well as with extensive, backgrounds in research design. The findings convincingly demonstrate that if young people can be successful in school, it can improve a broad range of outcomes in their lives, not the least of which is their ability to resist pressures to use drugs. The book provides: a summary of the findings and conclusions; a review of relevant literature; a detailed discussion of the survey and analysis methods; the academic attainment of those in the longitudinal panel; the delinquent behaviors of panel members as they relate to measures of educational success; and the patterns of initiation, continuation, and cessation for each substance: cigarettes, marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. This book is intended for anyone who deals with education and/or substance use, including educational, developmental, and social psychologists; sociologists; epidemiologists; educators; and policy makers. The analysis of panel survey data, using a variety of techniques, will also appeal to survey methodologists and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Research investigating the relationship between delinquency and the self-concept has generally concluded that delinquency is caused by some internal pathology. In contrast to these findings, however, a developing body of literature suggests that delinquency may be motivated by a need to enhance the self-concept. This research is not clear, however, regarding who should be most likely to seek self-enhancement through delinquency. The current investigation examines the hypothesis that delinquency may provide an important source of self-affirmation for youths who are limited in their exposure to more conventional sources of affirmation. Because success in school is an important conventional source of affirmation for adolescents, it was hypothesized that juveniles who are uninvested in academics would be particularly likely to consider delinquent alternatives when other conventional sources of affirmation were also limited. As such, the pressure to be delinquent should be greatest for individuals who are the most limited in the number of conventional resources to which they have access. Because Blacks have fewer conventional resources on average than Whites, the enhancing effect of delinquency on the self-concept was expected to vary by academic investment and racial group membership. Thus, it was hypothesized that Blacks who are academically uninvested would be most likely to find affirmation in delinquency. In order to test this hypothesis, two sets of secondary analyses were conducted using data from the Youth in Transition study (1966-1968) and National Youth Survey (1976-1977). Findings across both studies confirmed the hypothesis that among Blacks who were academically uninvested, initial delinquency enhances subsequent self-regard. Whites who were uninvested in school did not show this effect, and Blacks and Whites who were academically invested did not show this effect. These findings challenge conventional interpretations of delinquency and suggest that delinquency can be an important source of affirmation for juveniles who have few alternatives. Future research directions, and the implications of these findings, are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The Panel on Juvenile Crime: Prevention, Treatment, and Control convened a workshop on October 2, 1998, to explore issues related to educational performance, school climate, school practices, learning, student motivation and commitment to school, and their relationship to delinquency. The workshop was designed to bring together researchers and practitioners with a broad range of perspectives on the relationship between such specific issues as school safety and academic achievement and the development of delinquent behavior. Education and Delinquency reviews recent research findings, identifies gaps in knowledge and promising areas of future research, and discusses the need for program evaluation and the integration of empirical research findings into program design.
