She could go home, but why waste a new outfit and well-done hair? She decides to dine alone, but then her boss shows up, and now she doesn’t have to. Alex Barraza takes the place of Sherry’s date, and at the end of dinner, they spend the night together—bringing to life a fantasy that has played out in his mind over the past two years. One night together isn’t enough, and before long they embark on a secret affair that takes them both by surprise. But Alex hasn’t been completely honest with Sherry, and when she finds out the truth, he knows he’ll lose her. So instead of the truth, he stays silent. Because now he’s in too deep, and he can’t let her go. (Quicksand is a series of stand alone stories based on love, sex, and romance. Why Quicksand? Because love pulls you in. The more you fight, the deeper you fall. You can't fight your way out of quicksand, and you can't fight your way out of love.)

Book excerpt: The International Biological Programme (IBP) was a cooperative effort on the part of scientists throughout the world, whose goal was an integrated study of the basic processes of biological productivity. The challenge of meeting the increasing food needs of a growing population demands optimum productivity from natural and managed ecosystems, which has not hitherto appeared to be compatible with the maintenance of environmental quality. The basic problem in natural resource development is how to transfer the high productivity and stability characteristic of natural ecosystems to managed ecosystems whose yield is in more useable form. The IBP studies aimed to investigate the basic production parameters of natural ecosystems, for use as base lines to assess the factors which control agricultural production (Worthington, 1975). It was realised that much was to be gained by close cooperation between the countries within IBP, to describe global patterns of production and to utilise fully the limited financial resources and scientifically qualified personel available in the various disciplines in individual countries. Within the Terrestrial Productivity section (PT) four major habitat types (Biomes) have been recognised-woodland, grassland, aridland and tundra. In each Biome the ecosystem structure and production, the interrelationships of the various components, and the factors influencing the operation of the systems, have been analysed.

I felt numb, like I was having an out of body experience, and I was watching myself go through the motions. There were things to do; people to call, it was not the time to begin to fall apart. I had just joined an elite club of grieving mothers. This was the club no one talked about or wanted to become a member of. From that moment on my life was getting a makeover that I didnt ask for let alone consent to allowing it to happen. It was beyond my control; I was not given a choice. This was and is my life now. I am a grieving mother for the rest of my life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s unprecedented migration of people around the globe in search of work has had a widespread and troubling result: the separation of families. In The Scattered Family, Cati Coe offers a sophisticated examination of this phenomenon among Ghanaians living in Ghana and abroad. Challenging oversimplified concepts of globalization as a wholly unchecked force, she details the diverse and creative ways Ghanaian families have adapted long-standing familial practices to a contemporary, global setting. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research, Coe uncovers a rich and dynamic set of familial concepts, habits, relationships, and expectations—what she calls repertoires—that have developed over time, through previous encounters with global capitalism. Separated immigrant families, she demonstrates, use these repertoires to help themselves navigate immigration law, the lack of child care, and a host of other problems, as well as to help raise children and maintain relationships the best way they know how. Examining this complex interplay between the local and global, Coe ultimately argues for a rethinking of what family itself means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodissociation induced by the absorption of single photons permits the detailed study of molecular dynamics such as the breaking of bonds, internal energy transfer and radiationless transitions. The availability of powerful lasers operating over a wide frequency range has stimulated rapid development of new experimental techniques which make it possible to analyse photodissociation processes in unprecedented detail. This text elucidates the achievements in calculating photodissociation cross-sections and fragment state distributions from first principles, starting from multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces and the Schrödinger equation of nuclear motion. Following an extended introduction in which the various types of observables are outlined, the book summarises the basic theoretical tools, namely the time-independent and the time-dependent quantum mechanical approaches as well as the classical picture of photodissociation. The discussions of absorption spectra, diffuse vibrational structures, the vibrational and rotational state distributions of the photofragments form the core of the book. More specific topics such as the dissociation of vibrationally excited molecules, emission during dissociation, or nonadiabatic effects are also discussed. It will be of interest to graduate students and senior scientists working in molecular physics, spectroscopy, molecular collisions and molecular kinetics.

Book excerpt: A passionate intense yearning love is experienced by almost everyone at sometime in their life. Occasionally this love is returned but more often it is rejected, bringing disillusionment, pain, anger and a torment which never really goes away. Recently psychologists have found that most of us think ourselves as more desirable than others actually see us and so people we regard as of equal desirability may not see it in the same way, leading to the modern term 'delusional romantic attachment.' Edit Point tells the story of a roller coaster relationship with its euphoria and tragedies detailing the secondment of an award winning television producer sent to investigate the history of an ancient order of monks who seemed to have taken more interest in early science discoveries than their religion. Shortly after starting the project Tony Des Forges becomes involved in several interweaving relationships including fun loving Karen a young girl seeking affection and Linda a married woman that he can never put of his mind. Edit Point is a book for all seasons whether for snuggling up with in bed, lazing on a hot sandy beach, chilling out at the weekend or as a travelling companion on the way to work on the bus or train. For the right person Edit Point may be a thoughtful gift. Review When I was given Edit Point it came with a warning: "You'll hate it'.That warning was totally misplaced, I loved it. This was the most intriguing story I have read. None of the characters involved behave as you would expect in a novel, the 'hero' is a refreshingly real man with recognisable human responses to temptation and struggles to do the right thing. Can't wait for the second book Myryll Lacy author/critic
