Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarlett Rose has a story to finish, and like her name, it doesn't entirely belong to her. Fifteen years have passed since she ran away and built a new life in New Orleans-fifteen years without speaking to her mother, Faye Waverly, the person responsible for separating her from Julian Rose, the scarred boy whose magical eyes and mysterious rum bottles have never stopped haunting... and finding her. Now, after nearly two decades of estrangement, Faye has called Scarlett back to the Waverly family's sprawling Georgia estate to care for her ailing father, Roy. Leaving Louisiana means allowing her mother to interfere with her life again, which has consistently resulted in heartache. She'll have to leave behind the sisterhood she's formed with Pinkie Perideaux and her adoptive daughter, Genevieve, who is slowly recovering from severe amnesia. When Scarlett settles in Georgia, she remains in touch with the women, continuing her story, including how she lost Julian Rose for what she believed was forever. As she shares her memories, she not only uncovers Genevieve Perideaux's true identity, but in making good on a promise to Ms. Pinkie, secrets are revealed, and they connect the Vodou Seer to everyone Scarlett loves most. As time passes, Scarlett worries that Ms. Pinkie's third and final binding ritual-the one performed to bring Julian back to her again-has failed. But the magical woman remains hopeful, and with nothing to lose, Scarlett has no choice but to wait and see. The second book in a two-part series, The Scars We Choose is a reflective story about how we define love, the ways in which we cope when overcoming adversity, and the consequences that can arise when we allow other people, places, and events to affect our decisions, and ultimately, our happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarlett Elizabeth Nell Waverly has a story to tell and it's as big as her name. Like most stories, hers is divided into interwoven parts. The first part starts when she's young and her family buys a beach house on the Florida Gulf Coast. That's where she meets and falls in love with Julian Rose, a handsome biracial boy with a scarred face and a whacky, secret-keeping family. Just like her own. But not quite. Young Lizzie Nell's family disapproves of her friendship and budding romance with Julian Rose and they take drastic measures at keeping them apart. Julian also has a story, a story as magical as his haint blue eyes, only he's still trying to figure out where it starts and how it ends. Not long after he turns nine and learns a little about his mother's disappearance, Julian sets out to write her messages, stuffing them inside empty rum bottles and tossing them into the Gulf. Although he doesn't yet know it, there is magic in his words, a magic as remarkable as his connection to the little girl down the beach. As time moves on, and the two blossom into adolescence, Lizzie Nell can no longer live the life her family has chosen for her. She runs away-from school, from her unrelenting mother, and even from her name-setting out for New Orleans where she and Julian have planned to make a life together. But some things have a way of finding us, like our scars, the truth, and despondent mothers. The first book in a two-part series, THE SCARS WE CHOOSE is a coming-of-age story about how we define love, the ways in which we cope when overcoming adversity, and the consequences that can arise when we allow other people, places, and events to affect our decisions, and ultimately, our happiness.

Book excerpt: In The Scars We Carve: Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture, Allison M. Johnson considers the ubiquitous images of bodies—white and black, male and female, soldier and civilian—that appear throughout newspapers, lithographs, poems, and other texts circulated during and in the decades immediately following the Civil War. Rather than dwelling on the work of well-known authors, The Scars We Carve uncovers a powerful archive of Civil War–era print culture in which the individual body and its component parts, marked by violence or imbued with rhetorical power, testify to the horrors of war and the lasting impact of the internecine conflict. The Civil War brought about vast changes to the nation’s political, social, racial, and gender identities, and Johnson argues that print culture conveyed these changes to readers through depictions of nonnormative bodies. She focuses on images portrayed in the pages of newspapers and journals, in the left-handed writing of recent amputees who participated in penmanship contests, and in the accounts of anonymous poets and storytellers. Johnson reveals how allegories of the feminine body as a representation of liberty and the nation carved out a place for women in public and political realms, while depictions of slaves and black soldiers justified black manhood and citizenship in the midst of sectional crisis. By highlighting the extent to which the violence of the conflict marked the physical experience of American citizens, as well as the geographic and symbolic bodies of the republic, The Scars We Carve diverges from narratives of the Civil War that stress ideological abstraction, showing instead that the era’s print culture contains a literary and visual record of the war that is embodied and individualized.

Book excerpt: Painting a vivid picture of the original peoples of North America, long before European colonization changed the face of the continent, the Algonquin Quest novels show the traditions, the legends and the intrigue that shaped the First Nations. For Mahingan and his family, caught in the middle of a defining conflict with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), warfare is a part of life, but so are the natural world and the rich web of culture he shares with allies like the Omàmiwinini (Algonquin), the Ouendat (Huron), and the Nippissing. Includes I Am Algonquin This novel follows the story of a warrior named Mahingan and his family as they live the traditional Algonquin way of life long before Europeans arrived in North America. Hunting and warfare are daily concerns, and signs point to a defining conflict between Mahingan's nation and its enemies. Algonquin Spring Six years ago, Mahingan’s wife was taken from him by the Haudenosaunee at the Battle of the Falls. Now, after learning that she is still alive and captive, he and his remaining family struggle to survive and rescue her. But events 2,000 kilometres away, and a mysterious Mi’kmaq legend, are conspiring in ways that could snatch away Mahingan’s hopes.

Book excerpt: This book is about the spiritual journey of two people, a father and his son, who found purpose and meaning in their lives through their individual episodes of suffering, their struggle to forgive, and their faith in the power of prayer. As Daniel journeys with his son Christopher during the fi nal weeks of his short life, he acknowledges the profound spiritual learning that he experiences as he witnesses the courageous and truly Christian behavior of his son. The experience is so utterly powerful that Daniel felt compelled to share it with other people who may also be struggling to understand suffering, forgiveness, and prayer.
