Book excerpt: A young adult romantic comedy that will appeal to fans of 10 Things I Hate About You and Jenn Bennett’s Alex, Approximately. Seventeen-year-old Brynn Riley is on a hundred committees, has earned teacher’s pet in practically every class she’s ever taken, and is on track to make valedictorian. But one night, Brynn makes a mistake. A big one. Why wouldn’t the cops show up on the one night she’s ever cut loose in her life? Why wouldn’t she be assigned community service for one tiny mistake? And why, of all things, wouldn’t a boy from school happen to work at the pitbull rescue where she chooses to do her community service hours? Oliver West’s dad owns the rescue. And Oliver works there as his second in command. And Brynn and Oliver both know that she absolutely screwed him out of a major scholarship opportunity at school earlier in the semester. If he tells anyone at school that she was arrested, everything she’s worked so hard for will be disappear. If Brynn doesn’t want her secret spilled, she’d better start taking Oliver seriously. He’ll keep quiet if she helps him get another shot at the scholarship project (since she ruined it, after all). As the two get closer, the stakes begin to shift. Brynn starts to want Oliver for more than the community service checkmark that will give her back her squeaky-clean record, and Oliver, as it turns out, takes Brynn Riley very, very seriously. But, well . . . you know what they say: Nothing brings people together like blackmail, pitbulls, and court-ordered community service.
Book Synopsis The Lucifer Effect by : Philip Zimbardo
Download or read book The Lucifer Effect written by Philip Zimbardo and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive firsthand account of the groundbreaking research of Philip Zimbardo—the basis for the award-winning film The Stanford Prison Experiment Renowned social psychologist and creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment Philip Zimbardo explores the mechanisms that make good people do bad things, how moral people can be seduced into acting immorally, and what this says about the line separating good from evil. The Lucifer Effect explains how—and the myriad reasons why—we are all susceptible to the lure of “the dark side.” Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent men and women. Here, for the first time and in detail, Zimbardo tells the full story of the Stanford Prison Experiment, the landmark study in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into “guards” and “inmates” and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners. By illuminating the psychological causes behind such disturbing metamorphoses, Zimbardo enables us to better understand a variety of harrowing phenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide to how once upstanding American soldiers came to abuse and torture Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib. He replaces the long-held notion of the “bad apple” with that of the “bad barrel”—the idea that the social setting and the system contaminate the individual, rather than the other way around. This is a book that dares to hold a mirror up to mankind, showing us that we might not be who we think we are. While forcing us to reexamine what we are capable of doing when caught up in the crucible of behavioral dynamics, though, Zimbardo also offers hope. We are capable of resisting evil, he argues, and can even teach ourselves to act heroically. Like Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem and Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate, The Lucifer Effect is a shocking, engrossing study that will change the way we view human behavior. Praise for The Lucifer Effect “The Lucifer Effect will change forever the way you think about why we behave the way we do—and, in particular, about the human potential for evil. This is a disturbing book, but one that has never been more necessary.”—Malcolm Gladwell “An important book . . . All politicians and social commentators . . . should read this.”—The Times (London) “Powerful . . . an extraordinarily valuable addition to the literature of the psychology of violence or ‘evil.’”—The American Prospect “Penetrating . . . Combining a dense but readable and often engrossing exposition of social psychology research with an impassioned moral seriousness, Zimbardo challenges readers to look beyond glib denunciations of evil-doers and ponder our collective responsibility for the world’s ills.”—Publishers Weekly “A sprawling discussion . . . Zimbardo couples a thorough narrative of the Stanford Prison Experiment with an analysis of the social dynamics of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.”—Booklist “Zimbardo bottled evil in a laboratory. The lessons he learned show us our dark nature but also fill us with hope if we heed their counsel. The Lucifer Effect reads like a novel.”—Anthony Pratkanis, Ph.D., professor emeritus of psychology, University of California

Download or read book The Healthy Rebel written by Jessica M Pfeufer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been a journey into cooking – A tribute to friends long gone and to the ones still inspiring me. Recipes are meant to be discovered, shared and experienced with the people you love. It brings people together in conversation and laughter. Cooking is an expression of one’s soul in creativity. I began collecting recipes at a young age. I wish I knew where that little tin box full of index cards was today, what wonders it held! I suppose I could trace my first cooking experiences back to childhood, but my journey really began years later in the kitchen of my beautiful and amazing friend, Rosario Patti. He made cooking fun. He would always scold me with, “pay attention – I won’t be around forever.” Sadly, he wasn’t, and I was stuck trying to remember the words he spoke as we cooked the perfect pasta carbonara! To this day, I am still in search of it. So, as a reminder to all, if someone makes a dish you can’t stop thinking about or want to share with everyone you know, don’t hesitate to ask them how to make it. Write it down, learn it and share it. It is what food is all about! It’s EXACTLY why I began the journey of “I learned it from my Friends.”
Book Synopsis A History of Boxing in Mexico by : Stephen D. Allen
Download or read book A History of Boxing in Mexico written by Stephen D. Allen and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violent sport of boxing shaped and was shaped by notions of Mexican national identity during the twentieth century. This book reveals how boxing and boxers became sources of national pride and sparked debates on what it meant to be Mexican, masculine, and modern. The success of world-champion Mexican boxers played a key role in the rise of Los Angeles as the center of pugilistic activity in the United States. This international success made the fighters potent symbols of a Mexican culture that was cosmopolitan, nationalist, and masculine. With research in archives on both sides of the border, the author uses their life stories to trace the history and meaning of Mexican boxing.
Book Synopsis Pesos and Politics by : Mark Wasserman
Download or read book Pesos and Politics written by Mark Wasserman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between business and politics is crucial to understanding Mexican history, and Pesos and Politics explores this relationship from the mid-nineteenth century dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz through the Mexican Revolution (1876–1940). Historian Mark Wasserman argues that throughout this era, over the course of successive regimes, there was an evolving enterprise system that had to balance the interests of the Mexican national elite, state and local governments, large foreign corporations, and individual foreign entrepreneurs. During and after the Revolution these groups were joined by organized labor and organized peasants. Contrary to past assessments, Wasserman argues that no one of these groups was ever powerful enough to dominate another. Because Mexican governments and elites committed themselves to economic models that relied on foreign investment and technology, they had to reach a balance that simultaneously attracted foreign entrepreneurs, but did not allow them to become too powerful or too privileged. Concentrating on the three most important sectors of the Mexican economy: mining, agriculture, and railroads, and employing a series of case studies of the careers of prominent Mexican business people and the operations of large U.S.-owned ranching and mining companies, Wasserman effectively demonstrates that Mexicans in fact controlled their economy from the 1880s through 1940; foreigners did not exploit the country; and, Mexicans established, sometimes shakily, sometimes unplanned, a system of relations between foreigners, elite and government (and later unions and peasant organizations) that maintained checks and balances on all parties.
Book Synopsis Rebel with a Cause by : Hans Eysenck
Download or read book Rebel with a Cause written by Hans Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Eysenck is one of the world's leading psychologists and undoubtedly the most controversial. Throughout a long and illustrious career his work on personality and intelligence has aroused impassioned debate and attacks, both verbal and physical, on Eysenck himself. In his compelling and absorbing autobiography, Eysenck recounts in some detail the battles he had to fight in order to establish his major conclusions, as well as the reasons why he investigated these subjects. He also discusses his work on such topics as the health hazards of smoking, the prophylactic effects of behavior therapy on cancer and coronary heart disease, parapsychology, astrology, and other matters. In a new foreword, written for this edition, Eysenck expresses his pleasure regarding the fact that his autobiography is now being published in the United States. He discusses how much of his scientific life has been bound up with American psychology. Also new to this American edition is a chapter titled "Genius, Creativity, and Vitamins," in which Eysenck talks about the research he has worked on since his retirement in 1983. Rebel with a Cause is an intriguing autobiography and will be of paramount interest to psychologists, sociologists, and genetic scientists.
Book Synopsis Hungry for Revolution by : Joshua Frens-String
Download or read book Hungry for Revolution written by Joshua Frens-String and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungry for Revolution tells the story of how struggles over food fueled the rise and fall of Chile's Popular Unity coalition and one of Latin America's most expansive social welfare states. Reconstructing ties among workers, consumers, scientists, and the state, Joshua Frens-String explores how Chileans across generations sought to center food security as a right of citizenship. In so doing, he deftly untangles the relationship between two of twentieth-century Chile's most significant political and economic processes: the fight of an emergent urban working class to gain reliable access to nutrient-rich foodstuffs and the state's efforts to modernize its underproducing agricultural countryside.
Book Synopsis Vendors' Capitalism by : Ingrid Bleynat
Download or read book Vendors' Capitalism written by Ingrid Bleynat and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico City's public markets were integral to the country's economic development, bolstering the expansion of capitalism from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. These publicly owned and operated markets supplied households with everyday necessities and generated revenue for local authorities. At the same time, they were embedded in a wider network of economic and social relations that gave market vendors an influence far beyond the running of their stalls. As they fed the capital's population, these vendors fought to protect their own livelihoods, shaping the public sphere and broadening the scope of popular politics. Vendors' Capitalism argues for the centrality of Mexico City's public markets to the political economy of the city from the restoration of the Republic in 1867 to the heyday of the Mexican miracle and the PRI in the 1960s. Each day vendors interacted with customers, suppliers, government officials, and politicians, and the multiple conflicts that arose repeatedly tested the institutional capacity of the state. Through a close reading of the archives and an analysis of vendors' intersecting economic and political lives, Ingrid Bleynat explores the dynamics, as well as the limits, of capitalist development in Mexico.

Download or read book Doctor Rat written by William Kotzwinkle and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This World Fantasy Award winner in the vein of Animal Farm delves into a lab worthy of a mad Nazi scientist—but run by a brilliantly sadistic rodent. In the annals of American literature, there has never been a character quite like Doctor Rat, PhD. From one of the most indispensable storytellers in speculative fiction, this biting satire introduces a narrator of learned charm and humor, and a twisted logic that is absolutely chilling. Doctor Rat is a credit to his species. A survivor of the most refined scientific experiments, now removed from the maze, he has become a valued and productive member of the academic community. When he must administer a lethal dose, he comforts his fellow rats with his compassionate slogan: “Death is freedom.” But everything changes when animals worldwide begin to rebel, refusing to accept their proper places in the natural order of things: as test subjects, pets, or food. And only Doctor Rat has the courage to defend mankind from the ungrateful animal kingdom. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “dazzlingly original” and “occasionally quite beautiful,” Doctor Rat is a sly and stylish indictment of fanaticism in mice and men. “A truly imaginative impresario . . . [Doctor Rat] teases your conscience with educated wit and versatile improvisation, not to mention the casual flick of the tail about to be cut off.” —Kirkus Reviews
