Now including the extended poetry cycle The Silver Veins of Dreams: "Appearing in the heart of a warm sky, and aflame with the tender tinge of gold. The radiant sun above a blue earth, and below it the silver veins of dreams, like the keepings of angels, or the rushing floods of time, against a backdrop of vast and starry space, which can be seen as the seat of possibility, or the place of inspiration. For somewhere there is a plane of incalescent light, that makes music of our lives, whenever we approach it with hope in our hearts, faith and a strong aspiration, or the deep fire of belief, that is like the secret to being alive, and thriving under the sun."

Book excerpt: The timeless realm of the underworld stretches across infinity, each kingdom protected in a unique way to defend the dark lords that reside within. On the far side lies a portal that exits to the land of the living, but beyond that gate is an island ravaged by war, hiding horrors rivaling those of the underworld. And somewhere on this war-torn island is one of the greatest treasures ever created: The Singing Sapphire, a gemstone imbued with the ability to sing with such power it can bring the greatest warrior to tears. Quinton has been granted sixty days by the elf king to make the journey, find the sapphire and return it to his court. Only then will he be given the information he so desperately seeks, but as Quinton travels deeper into darkness, the truths revealed there threaten to consume him. Now, he must confront the truths hidden within and retrieve the sapphire before time runs out.

Book excerpt: A dynamic, poetic work that plums the soul of the reader--through song lyrics--by delving into the aspirations, heartbreaks, and commitments of both everyday and extraordinary people who strive to understand themselves and their worlds through acts of love, hope, desperation, and humor that define them and their environments . . . and drive each of them toward the better life we all hope to achieve. The title, The Black Sapphire, is derived from the personal reminiscence of the author, and is a metaphor for Anthracite coal.

As the ladies investigate, they have other problems to occupy them. Elinor is unsure if she will be welcomed back into high society, and worse, Beresford is being a bit too overbearing in his attempts to protect her. Meanwhile, Perry seems to have his own romantic troubles, this time with the devastatingly gorgeous Jaq. Then a vampiri goes missing, and Elinor’s inquisitiveness leads her closer to a killer. This time, it will take all her friends’ ingenuity to save her from death. Who killed the royal advisor? What is the Sapphire Library? And who would like mermaid tears with their tea? Enjoy the third mystery in the Lady Diviner series, set in a Regency England full of magic, manners, and romance.

Book excerpt: Verses fly out of layers of time and soar into the universe, like passionate butterflies darting into the fire, when I leaf through my poetry book. This collection includes English translation and original Chinese version of my 170 poems. Poetry evokes transhistorical empathy. I write in classical Chinese and translate them into modern English because I want to facilitate the understanding between Chinese and American by transferring the beauty of one language to another. If everyone lives their life with the heart of poetry, then happiness prevails in the world. If everyone understands each other with empathy, then harmony prevails in the world. If everyone learns about different cultures with compassion, then peace prevails in the world.

Book excerpt: Sapphires is written to entertain. Its conflict of ideals and outcome may surprise some, startle a few, and morally disturb many. Hopefully the reader will cry a little, think a little, and laugh a little. During the Vietnam conflict, Hanoi ingeniously created a drug-cash-weapons triangle, patiently exploiting greed and personal weaknesses in its victorious efforts. Using narcotics from Burma as an offensive and defensive weapon, Hanoi directed the sale of drugs to military personnel and used the profits to purchase arms and munitions, often from U.S. supply depots. In addition, Hanoi used strategic timing and flooded U.S. troops with cheap narcotics, hindering military effectiveness. Thailand was a major highway for drugs into Vietnam. Prevented, by diplomatic treaty, from taking direct military action, the Joint Chiefs of Staff created a multi-service covert unit, code name Sapphire, to interrupt the drug-cash-weapons triangle and identify as many corrupt U.S. military personnel as possible. U.S. Army colonel and Sapphire group leader, code name Blue, was John Leopold. John, a former SEAL, is a darling of the Joint Chiefs and on track to become a general officer. His carefully handpicked team consists of a navy lieutenant, code name Orange; a marine captain, code name Green; an air force nurse, code name Black; a Thai national, code name Clear; and a Burmese national, code name Yellow. The Sapphires' main opponent is a Burmese family who raise and package for market a highly profitable farm product - heroin. The Zawatees, headed by the family matriarch, Su Song, use profits from heroin to supply educational, health care, electric, and other services for the citizens of their southern Burma district, a district with a higher standard of living than in all of Burma. The Zawatees, and the citizens of their district, fight for the right to export their highly profitable farm product in order to afford and enjoy a high quality of life and first-world privileges. The Sapphires'; through diplomacy, battle, personal sacrifice, and tragedy, manage a degree of success. While planning and carrying out the final Sapphire-Zawatee confrontation, Colonel Leopold, who has come to admire his adversary, resolves some very strong personal and cultural ideals.

Book excerpt: Representations of music were employed to create a wider 'Orient' on the pages, stages and walls of nineteenth-century Britain. This book explores issues of orientalism, otherness, gender and sexuality that arise in artistic British representations of non-European musicians during this time, by utilizing recent theories of orientalism, and the subsidiary (particularly aesthetic and literary) theories both on which these theories were based and on which they have been influential. The author uses this theoretical framework of orientalism as a form of othering in order to analyse primary source materials, and in conjunction with musicological, literary and art theories, thus explores ways in which ideas of the Other were transformed over time and between different genres and artists. Part I, The Musical Stage, discusses elements of the libretti of popular musical stage works in this period, and the occasionally contradictory ways in which 'racial' Others was represented through text and music; a particular focus is the depiction of 'Oriental' women and ideas of sexuality. Through examination of this collection of libretti, the ways in which the writers of these works filter and romanticize the changing intellectual ideas of this era are explored. Part II, Works of Fiction, is a close study of the works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard, using other examples of popular fiction by his contemporary writers as contextualizing material, with the primary concern being to investigate how music is utilized in popular fiction to represent Other non-Europeans and in the creation of orientalized gender constructions. Part III, Visual Culture, is an analysis of images of music and the 'Orient' in examples of British 'high art', illustration and photography, investigating how the musical Other was visualized.
