Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 paperback edition. Written in 1895, George Bernard Shaw's "Sanity of Art" essay is a response to Max Nordau's 1892 book, "Degeneration," which criticized fin de siecle modernist trends by suggesting its practitioners were irrational, amoral, and possibly even insane with neurasthenia. Eschewing conventional morality, Shaw advocates for the right of individuals to decide for themselves the saneness of the maniacal geniuses cultivating the new aesthetic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A MASTERFUL BOOK ABOUT BREATHING LIFE INTO ART AND ART INTO LIFE "Stephen Nachmanovitch's The Art of Is is a philosophical meditation on living, living fully, living in the present. To the author, an improvisation is a co-creation that arises out of listening and mutual attentiveness, out of a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity. It is a product of the nervous system, bigger than the brain and bigger than the body; it is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, unprecedented and unrepeatable. Drawing from the wisdom of the ages, The Art of Is not only gives the reader an inside view of the states of mind that give rise to improvisation, it is also a celebration of the power of the human spirit, which — when exercised with love, immense patience, and discipline — is an antidote to hate." — Yo-Yo Ma, cellist

Book Synopsis Sanity and Insanity (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Mercier
Download or read book Sanity and Insanity (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Mercier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanity and Insanity The other day a corn merchant consulted me about one of his children who had some nervous malady. "I took her," he said, "to Sir Omicron Pie, and" (indignantly) "he gave her bromide!" It struck me as a fact of remarkable significance that a man who was immersed all day and all the year round in his own business, should have sufficient knowledge, and sufficient intelligent interest, in a somewhat special department of a widely different profession, to observe what particular drug was ordered for his daughter, and to form his own judgment as to the propriety of administering that drug in that case. Thirty years ago such a remark would have been impossible. Then the medical man was looked upon as an oracle, who was regarded vaguely and generally as clever or the reverse, but whose dicta were to be accepted or rejected; not criticized. The ordinary intelligent layman gathered his notion of the professional ability of his medical adviser from general grounds, and not from critical observation of particular prescriptions. Nowadays it is different. The patient and the patient's friends expect a detailed description of the precise seat and character of the disorder; and what is more, they consider themselves quite capable of judging whether the explanation given is rational, and whether the treatment is appropriate. Medical terms are glibly used, and medical theories are freely discussed in general society, and inability to join in a medical discussion is regarded as evidence of deficiency of general culture. Book Synopsis Living with Leonardo: Fifty Years of Sanity and Insanity in the Art World and Beyond by : Martin Kemp

This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death, the world- renowned da Vinci expert recounts his fifty- year journey with the work of the world’s most famous artist A personal memoir interwoven with original research, Living with Leonardo takes us deep inside Leonardo da Vinci scholar Martin Kemp’s lifelong passion for the genius who has helped define our culture. Each chapter considers a specific work as Kemp offers insight into his encounters with academics, collectors, curators, devious dealers, auctioneers, and authors— as well as how he has grappled with legions of “Leonardo loonies,” treaded vested interests in academia and museums, and fended off fusillades of non- Leonardos. Kemp explains his thinking on the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, retells his part in the identification of the stolen Buccleuch Madonna, and explains his involvement on the two major Leonardo discoveries of the last 100 years: La Bella Principessa and Salvator Mundi. His engaging narrative elucidates the issues surrounding attribution, the scientific analyses that support experts’ interpretations, and the continuing importance of connoisseurship. Illustrated with the works being discussed, Living with Leonardo explores the artist’s genius from every angle, including technical analysis and the pop culture works he inspired, such as The Da Vinci Code, and his enduring influence 500 years after his death.

Book excerpt: 'I have a more or less irresistible passion for books' Vincent van GoghVincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was famously driven by his passion for God, for art - and for books. Vincent's life with books is examined here chapter by chapter, from his early adulthood, when he considered becoming a pastor, to his decision to be a painter, to the end of his life. He moved from Holland to Paris to Provence; at each moment, ideas he encountered in books defined and guided his thoughts and his life. Vincent's letters to his brother refer to at least 200 authors. Books and readers - whether dreaming or deeply absorbed - are frequent subjects of his paintings.Vincent not only read fiction, he also knew many works of art from detailed descriptions and illustrations in monographs, biographies and museum guides. Always keeping up to date, he never missed the latest literary and artistic magazines. This thought-provoking and original study takes the reader on an artistic-literary journey through Vincent's discoveries, his favourite authors and best-loved books, revealing a continuous dialogue between his own work, the artists and the authors who inspired him, and giving life to his comment: 'Books and reality and art are the same kind of thing for me.'

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanity of William Blake And if we are to judge William Blake's sanity by the limited arguments of mind specialists, we shall most certainly find him lacking; though we may wish the world were less sane if the loss of its wits would bring it nearer to the Kingdom in which Blake lived. But more than this. He was mad if we are to judge him by those many wise Whose only idea of living in perfect sanity is to take in one another's washing, and yet not wash it in public. He was mad if no man may see further than his neighbours with out the sanction of the Lunacy Commission if no man has right to prophecy; if none may use terrific metaphor without being accused of coarse realism if none may call the devil black without being stigmatized as small-minded; if none may light a candle without the sane world disputing his right to find road through the darkness.
