They have been employed extensively in Japan for many years to improve land reclaimed from the sea. The advantages and disadvantages of using sand compaction piles are compared with other vibro-compaction techniques such as stone columns. Methods are described for construction of sand compaction piles on land and over water. Design theories are given for the utilization of sand compaction piles at sites underlain by both cohesionless and cohesive soils. For sites underlain by cohesionless sands, procedures are presented for estimating the increase in standard penetration resistance in both the sand compaction pile and the surrounding sand. Techniques are described for estimating stability and one-dimensional consolidation settlement of sites underlain by cohesive soils that have been improved with sand compaction piles. Finally, typical applications of sand compaction piles are described, and practical design criteria and practices are given.

One of the reasons of the above is that SCP method can be applied to both sandy and clayey soil. Complicated soil strata in Japan have also contributed to the development of this method. This paper evaluates and verifies the applicability of the design procedure of SCP method to sandy and clayey grounds by comparing the measured data with designed values. Moreover the latest technolgy of SCP method, that is the Mechatronic Consolidation System which can set up sand compaction piles in accordance with the variation of soil properties, is also introduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of the method of installation of centrifuge model sand compaction piles (SCPs) in soft clay are studied. The comparative study involves the frozen pile method, a 1-g displacement method, and a high-g displacement method. The results show that, although all the SCP-improved models exhibit higher strength compared to the unimproved models, both displacement methods confer additional enhancement in strength to ground improvement, which was not present in the frozen pile models. In addition, wavy settlement patterns were also observed in the frozen pile models, but not in the displacement models. The observed differences were explained by the postulated differences in stress states of the improved models. For the frozen pile models, thawing during reconsolidation was postulated to lead to a reduction in effective lateral stress, resulting in further softening of the clay. On the other hand, the cavity expansion effect caused by the displacement methods was postulated to lead to a set-up in the strength of the clay, thereby resulting in better integrity in the response of the improved ground to loading.
