Book excerpt: Disagreements concerning the nature and extent of the universe constitute a focus of theological debate which permeates buddhism at every level. While there have been numerous attempts to catalogue the details of the Buddhist cosmologies, none has attempted a general interpretation of their underlying intention. This work attempts to begin the process of interpreting the major phases of Buddhist Cosmological speculation by seeing in them various dramas of salvation tailored to the philosophical and theological predilections of their respective traditions. To a large extent, this interpretation relies on an examination of continuities between the Buddhist cosmologies and those of the hellenistic world as a whole. In the course of this study, two major cosmological traditions emerge; those which rely on metaphors of time and those which rely on metaphors of time and those which rely on metaphors of space. The former are associated with the Hinayana and the latter with the Mahayana forms of Buddhism. Each draws on images of motion and light to articulate its vision of the drama of salvation.

Download or read book Psalms of the Early Buddhists written by A F Rhys Davids and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Psalms of the Early Buddhists" or "The Psalms of the Early Buddhists" it is a compilation of verses from the Pali Canon, the oldest collection of Buddhist scriptures. The Pali Canon is the primary religious scripture of Theravada Buddhism, and it contains teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha. In this particular collection, A. F. Rhys Davids has translated and compiled verses that express the thoughts and aspirations of early Buddhists. The term "psalms" draws a parallel with the Psalms of the Bible, indicating that these verses have a similar devotional and reflective quality. The book provides insight into the spiritual and philosophical aspects of early Buddhism through the words of the Buddha and his disciples. It offers a glimpse into the practices, beliefs, and ethical principles of the early Buddhist community. If you are interested in Buddhist scriptures and want to explore the foundational teachings of Buddhism, "Psalms of the Early Buddhists" can be a valuable resource.
Book Synopsis Framing Intellectual and Lived Spaces in Early South Asia by : Lucas den Boer
Download or read book Framing Intellectual and Lived Spaces in Early South Asia written by Lucas den Boer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this book address a series of ‘confrontations’—debates between intellectual communities, the interplay of texts and images, and the intersection of monumental architecture and physical terrain—and explore the ways in which the legacy of these encounters, and the human responses to them, conditioned cultural production in early South Asia (c. 4th-7th centuries CE). Rather than an agonistic term, the book uses ‘confrontation’ as a heuristic to examine historical moments within this pivotal period in which individuals and communities were confronted with new ideas and material expressions. The first half of the volume addresses the intersections of textual, material, and visual forms of cultural production by focusing on three primary modes of confrontation: the relation of inscribed texts to material media, the visual articulation of literary images and, finally, the literary interpretation and reception of built landscapes. The second part of the volume focuses on confrontations both within and between intellectual communities. The articles address the dynamics between peripheral and dominant movements in the history of Indian philosophy.
Book Synopsis History of Indian Buddhism by : Etienne Lamotte
Download or read book History of Indian Buddhism written by Etienne Lamotte and published by Peeters. This book was released on 1988 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Indian Buddhism is undoubtedly Msgr. E. Lamotte's most brilliant contribution to the field of Buddhist exegesis. The work contains a vivid, vigorous and fully-detailed description of early Buddhism and its teachings, the material organization of the Community, the formation and further developments of the writings, the conciliar traditions, the evolution of Buddhist sculpture and architecture, the origins of the sects, the Buddhist dialects and the constitution of the legends, and sets them in the historical background in which buddhist doctrines originated and expanded in India and in the neighbouring countries. Using the material evidence provided by Indian epigraphy and archaeological remains on the one hand, and taking into account the data supplied by Western (Latin and Greek) and Far Eastern (Tibetan and Chinese) sources on the other, Msgr. E. Lamotte has succeeded in producing a lucid and basic book that is unanimously considered as a classic of contemporary Buddhist studies. After thirty years, the work has retained all its value, but, in order to meet the requirements of recent Buddhist scholarship, the History of Indian Buddhism has been supplemented with an additional bibliography, an index of technical terms and revised geographical maps.
