It describes the birth of the new state at the Peace Conference of Versailles and follows its development under the international government up to the autumn of 1934. Dr. Florinsky describes fully the labor conditions in the Saar Basin, which present some unusual features and are largely responsible for whatever degree of success the international government has achieved. The struggle for the Saar has entered into a new phase with the establishment of the Hitler régime in Germany and the approach of the plebiscite which in January, 1935, is to decide the future of the territory. The nature and character of this struggle are described by Dr. Florinsky from personal observations. He spent the summer of 1934 in the Saar Basin and had ample opportunities of discussing the situation with the members of the international government, leaders of the political parties, representatives of religious organizations, industry, trade unions, as well as the rank and file of the people. The book examines the probable economic and political consequences of the alternative solutions of the plebiscite from the point of view of the Saar, Franco-German relations, and the peace of Europe and the world.

Distanced in the beginning, the Catholic Church and the Nazi party drew closer as Hitler's popularity increased. At the ratification of the Concordat in Rome, a commitment not to interfere with the Nazis' 'Final Solution' to the 'Jewish Question' was traded for a verbal promise from Berlin to exclude the baptized converts. While the Nazi government violated the Concordat at every turn, the Church kept zealously its promise. Pope Pius XII never mentioned the persecuted Jews by name and denied any knowledge of the annihilation of the Jews. Even after the war, Pius XII refused to condemn anti-Semitism and Germany's role in the Holocaust. Instead, the Vatican engaged in the protection of genocide perpetrators and assisted in their mass escape. Book excerpt: Antifascism is usually described as either a political ideology of activists and intellectuals confronting the dictatorships of Hitler and Mussolini, or as a cynical tool that justified the Stalinist expansion of communism in Europe. Andreas Agocs widens our understanding of antifascism by placing it in the context of twentieth-century movements of 'cultural renewal'. He explores the concept of 'antifascist humanism', the attempt by communist and liberal intellectuals and artists to heal the divisions of Nazism by reviving the 'other Germany' of classical Weimar. This project took intellectual shape in German exile communities in Europe and Latin America during World War II and found its institutional embodiment in the Cultural League for Democratic Renewal in Soviet-occupied Berlin in 1945. During the emerging Cold War, antifascist humanism's uneasy blend of twentieth-century mass politics and cultural nationalism became the focal point of new divisions in occupied Germany and the early German Democratic Republic. This study traces German traditions of cultural renewal from their beginnings in antifascist activism to their failure in the emerging Cold War.
