Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russians at the Gates of Herat In my "Russian Advance Towards India," published in 1882, I made these remarks: - "In my writings on Russia I try to be impartial. I know I have a greater love for Russia, the country of my youth, and a better appreciation of the Russian people, than the so-called 'Russophile' traders in politics, who lauded her indiscriminately in 1877, from motives of self or party interest, and abandoned her afterwards to false attacks; and the public know, from my writings, that I am a vigilant and anxious observer of the Russian advance toward India. I am thus, I suppose, both a Russophile and a Russophobe. As for my local opinions, my youth was passed in a country which has no political parties corresponding with our Liberal and Conservative factions, and does not want them; while my studies have led me to survey politics from the standpoint of one who considers himself more in the light of a citizen of the English Empire - of that great empire that embraces the five empires of England, of Canada, of Australia, of South Africa, and of India - than merely a Liberal or Conservative Englishman of Lesser England only. Being, in this sense, an Imperialist, and a non-party writer, I claim immunity from any charge of unduly favouring Liberal or Conservative policy in my remarks on the Central Asian Question. If the war which has reddened Europe has achieved no other result, it would have been worth its dreadful cost in blood and treasure. The liberation of the Slav has changed the trend of universal thought, and will affect and underlie the coming centuries. It wrote on the walls of the world the solemn warning that Autocracy's. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Advance Towards India: Conversations With Skobeleff, Ignatieff, and Other Distinguished Russian Generals and Statesmen, on the Central Asian Question IT is obvious that a writer who records the con versations of his contemporaries is liable to be unintentionally indiscreet, particularly when they place themselves under no restraint in expressing their opinions to him. Nothing would pain me more than to find I had in any way been guilty in this respect, in describing my interviews with the leading Russian authorities on the Central Asian Question; and if any opinions have been published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Advance On the author's return from a journey made in 1901 through Manchuria and the Far East, preceded by a visit to Russia and Siberia, a series of articles was published in the Saturday Evening Post, of Philadelphia, setting out things seen and observed in the regions of Russia's latest Asiatic advance. A description was also given of the apparent situation of China as affected by the operations there of two or three European nations; and what then seemed to be the probable conflict between Russia and Japan was particularly pointed out, with the causes of it. These articles form a considerable portion of this volume; and, indeed, the seeming advisability of their publication in book form, and certain requests therefor, are the occasion and apology for this work. They are reproduced practically without change. It was believed that a more comprehensive understanding of the whole subject might be given if other chapters were added briefly describing Siberia and certain conditions and tendencies in Russia itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Railway Advance Into Central Asia: Notes of a Journey From St. Petersburg to Samarkand Anglo-russian relations, I have not written from the exclusively political point of View. It has always seemed to me that prejudice and confusion of ideas about Russia are due in a very great measure to this purely political treat ment. An impartial book of a general character, such, for instance, as Schuyler's Turkistan, which in my opinion has not been superseded by any subsequent work, may be more useful in helping Englishmen to draw their own poli tical conclusions than many of the writings of professional politicians and journalists. This merit, at least, I hope, I may claim for the results of my own humble efforts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of the Russian Democracy Russia that volumes are written with the special purpose of proving that there is a Ukrainian culture in existence. The Ukrainians are justly proud of their great poet, Shevchenko, but the Great Russians love him and consider him their own. On the other hand, the greatest writers of the Ukrainian nationality, Gogol and Korolenko, wrote in Russian and will live forever in the history of Russian literature and culture. The beauty and the power of Russia's culture may be best illustrated by the fact that it drew to itself even nationalities far distant from the Russian in their historical and cultural traditions. From this point of view, of special interest are the Jewish and the Caucasian problems, as cultural problems in Russia. The press and the platform are open to you to give publicity to your support, and if you have means you can help in the dissemina tion of pamphlets to keep alive public feeling to the danger of the Russian advance. By Russian, as used here, is meant the Great Russian, inhabiting Central Russia; the White Russian, living between Poland and Russia; and the Little Russian, from what was formerly South Rus sia. It does not include the Jews, Poles, Finns, Letts, Lithuanians, Ruthenians from Galicia, or other Slavic races.
