Book excerpt: A manual on the art of casting the runes by a leading expert on ancient divination practices. From the author of the bestselling Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic and Runelore comes the foundational handbook on rune work, a practical manual for novice and adept alike. A well-known expert on this ancient divinatory art, Edred Thorsson shows how you can create and cast your own runes. The word rune means “mystery.” Casting the runes enables the runecaster to penetrate the mystery of the relationship between the gods and humans. Based on the same ancient glyphs that have been used for centuries to preserve that connection between mortal and divine, Thorsson traces the evolution of runecasting, showing its historical, spiritual, and cosmological significance. In the Runecaster's Handbook, he teaches you how to divine your own fate, as well as the fate of those around you, and guides you on a journey of merging your internal and external environments to truly learn the runecaster’s art.

She spends her days daydreaming of sailing away and exploring the world instead of studying the runes and learning her spells. The villagers consider her odd, in looks and in manner. She’s nothing like her talented sister, Sýr, keeper of the sacred moonstone that ensures the village’s continued survival. But when a rival clan led by an evil witch raids the village and kidnaps her sister, Runa is forced to act. With a fallen Valkyrie by her side, and the help of a gorgeous half-elf Runa is not quite sure she can trust, the apprentice must travel to the site of an ancient runecasting competition to try to win back the magical gem. But the journey will not be easy; the three unlikely companions encounter malevolent and supernatural creatures at every turn. Somehow, Runa must summon the courage and strength to face her destiny, a destiny she never wanted. Or die trying.

Part 1 gives, among other things, a fair summarizing historical overview, whereby corresponding finds and their possible interpretations are not left out. Part 2 offers many passages in related mythology and the Norse sagas where runes occur, the corresponding quotes are included. These two parts form an important foundation for the third part, which deals with the use of runes in modern magical-practical usage. After decades of study of various western streams and schools of magic and a thorough study of the runes, the author has managed to combine both. The result is a unique modern rune magic, which is presented in the third part of the book.

Book excerpt: Everything You Need to Know to Begin Working With Runes The human language gives us the power to create. It is possible because we can use a different combination of words to express unique meanings or ideas. Today, it is still debated how many words are in the English language, with some sources such as the Oxford English Dictionary assuming that the official number is close to 750,000. Runes are a set of alphabets, just like the alphabets that exist in the languages practiced today. They prominently feature vertical and often slanted lines. This arrangement of lines serve a purpose, and they are: 1.Parchments were an expensive commodity back then, so writing on them was not a viable option. Ink wasn't cheap, and for that reason, using it was uncommon. Therefore, runes were carved into objects and surfaces instead. 2.Since carving was used, using straight lines was much easier than curves. 3.While using straight lines, runes avoided the inclusion of horizontal strokes, as those lines could look like the natural lines of surfaces like wood, thereby removing any trace of the line itself. No one can establish with absolute certainty when the runes originated. One of the most popular theories is that it was developed by the Goths, a race of East-Germanic people. Historians also believe that runes have taken inspiration from the Latin alphabet. While this does not narrow down its time of origin, it gives a rough estimate, placing it in the 1st century BC. In this book you'll discover: ✓ History of Runes ✓ The Power of Runes ✓ Runes of the Elder Futhark ✓ The Art of the Runestave ✓ How To Successfully Runecasting for Beginners ✓ Advanced Runecasting Techniques ✓ and much more! Book excerpt: This is guaranteed to be completely unlike any other occult text you've ever read, whether it be some wussified "New Age" book about crystals and guardian angels, or some classic tome of barely decipherable ceremonial evocations. No, this book is really "something different." You will find no references to potions, poppets, or pendulums; nor shall you find illustrations of magic squares, voodoo ververs, or Enochian script. Incantations, folk magic, numerology, and the Seals of Solomon have also been excluded from this work. What, then, remains? Quite simply, a magical philosophy which can be applied, with great success, by students at any level of advancement. Great emphasis has been placed upon self-knowledge and common sense-secrets have also been divulged as to various tried and true methods which will enable a besieged magician to kick the boogyman's ass. Although presented as a work of fiction, this extensively researched text contains within it a great deal of occult Truth-and it is highly entertaining as well! The author is clearly either a genius or a madman-perhaps both.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and practical guide to the ancient oracle based on the runic alphabet of the Norse • Reveals the symbolism and divinatory significance of the 24 rune "staves" • Provides clear instructions on how to craft your own rune stones • Explains the role of runes in the Norse wisdom tradition and its influence on such works as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Nordic runes are a potent and profoundly transformative magic system that gives contemporary readers access to the ancient wisdom tradition of Northern European cultures. The runes have deep resonances within the pagan Norse world of gods and goddesses, giants, dwarves, warriors, and wizards, which have greatly influenced the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, among others. Norse tradition attributes the discovery of the runes to the "All-Father" Odin--a god of inspiration and secret wisdom and the mythical prototype for runecasters, who established the pattern for gaining his knowledge. Nordic Runes addresses three major areas: Runelore, the history of this 2000-year-old Norse oracle; Runestaves, the meaning of the individual runes of the Elder Futhark alphabet and their powerful mythological, magical, and practical lessons for daily life; and Runecasting, a comprehensive guide to the oracular application of the ancient runes, including their crafting, divination, and self-development. As Nordic Runes shows, the runes do more than simply reflect the path of fate; they help develop and enhance intuition. By learning to cast and interpret the runes, the user becomes receptive to the energy currents in material reality and empowered in the arts of its transformation.

Book excerpt: After the Singularity, everyone and everything is sentient and telepathic. Aliens notice and invade Earth. In Rucker's last novel, Postsingular, the Singularity happened and life on Earth was transformed by the awakening of all matter into consciousness and into telepathic communication. The most intimate moments of your life can be experienced by anyone who cares to pay attention, or by hundreds of thousands of anyones if you are one of the Founders who helped create the Singularity. The small bunch of Founders, including young newlyweds Thuy, a hypertext novelist, and Jayjay, a gamer and brain-enhancement addict, are living a popular, live-action media life. But now alien races that have already gone through this transformation notice Earth for the first time, and begin to arrive to exploit both the new environment and any available humans. Some of them are real estate developers, some are slavers, and some just want to help. But how to tell the difference? Someone has to save humanity from the alien invasions, and it might as well be reality media stars Thuy and Jayjay.
