Our revolutionary leaders urgently sought better access to their continent. Rivers were the only avenues open to them, but going west against the current was hard. Washington and Jefferson and Franklin and other founders turned to James Rumsey, a genius living at the edge of the wilderness. Rumsey had an invention that addressed their necessity. It was a steamboat. It inspired solutions that would open the continent to settlement.

Download or read book Steam written by Andrea Sutcliffe and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1807, Robert Fulton, using an English mail-order steam engine, chugged four miles an hour up the Hudson River, passing into popular folklore as the inventor of the steamboat. However, the true first passenger steamboat in America, and the world, was built from scratch, and plied the Delaware River in 1790, almost two decades earlier. Its inventor, John Fitch, never attained Fulton's riches, and was rewarded with ridicule and poverty. Considering there was not a single working steam engine in America in the early 1780s, Fitch's steamboat's development was nothing short of remarkable. But he faced competition from the start, and he and several other inventors fought a string of bitter battles, legal and otherwise. Steam tells the dramatic story of Fitch and his adversaries, weaving their lives into a fascinating tale including the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. It is the story behind America's first important venture in technology, the persevering and colorful men that made it happen, and the great invention that moved a new nation westward.
Download or read book Without a Prop written by David S. Yetman and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hinckley, Hunt, Little Harbor and Lyman-Morse are names that conjure up visions of sleek luxury yachts, comfortably slicing through even the roughest ocean waters. In the quest to offer the latest technology, many of their designs now feature water-jets instead of traditional propellers. But the latest thing in propulsion isn't new at all. Today's water-jets are the result of more than two centuries of trial and error, exhilarating successes and frustrating defeats experienced by a cast of inventors, entrepreneurs and adventurers who weren't afraid to lay it all on the line. They include a self-taught craftsman backed by the Founding Fathers, the engineers of the Royal Navy, a small-town Ohio genius, a New Zealand sportsman and an American industrialist. Their efforts, which ranged from back-yard tinkering to daring international expeditions contributed to the spectacular technology that now powers everything from fishing boats to frigates. The water-jet is here to stay. David S. Yetman has been a prolific, award-winning boating writer for more than 15 years. He has written four books and more than 200 articles for a broad range of boating magazines including Boating World, Motor Boating, Offshore, Power & Motoryacht, Sail, Soundings, Trailer Boats and Yachting. As a young man, he was involved in several start-up ventures in design, manufacturing and retail sales before embarking on a career in mechanical design and engineering, rising to the level of Engineering Manager for a high-technology company before retiring in 2001. He has been awarded patents for designs of a wide range of products, including motorcycle frames, laboratory apparatus and automated instruments used in DNA research, and enjoys applying his broad technical experience to boating and writing. He and his wife, Pat, live on Hodgdon Island, Maine and cruise the New England coast on CURMUDGEON, their Albin Tournament Express convertible.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 15 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 15 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume 15 Jefferson, a veteran of the councils of his own country's revolution, becomes an eyewitness of the opening events of the great upheaval in France in 1789. The Archbishop of Bordeaux and his colleagues of the National Assembly ask Jefferson's aid and counsel in drafting a new constitution; he declines in July but gives a private dinner in August for Lafayette and the moderates who wish to form a coalition and thus avoid civil war. He is catapulted into the limelight by Mirabeau's attack on Necker for the shortage of grain and flour. He advises Lafayette about the latter's proposed draft of a Declaration of Rights and proposes a compromise charter for France in order to gain time, to consolidate the advances already made, and to allow public opinion to ripen. Jefferson dines with De Corny and learns at first hand what happened at the fall of the Bastille. Three days later he is among the crowds with Dugald Stewart, the young Scottish philosopher, as Louis XVI is "led in triumph by his people thro' the streets of the capital." He writes long dispatches to Jay and private letters to Thomas Paine and Richard Price, among others, detailing the events that he regarded as "the first chapter of the history of European liberty." Early in September Jefferson becomes ill and, treated by a philosopher-physician, is possessed by the idea that "the earth belongs in usufruct to the living." He urges Madison to develop this concept and to apply it to American legislation--but his ostensible purpose is supported by arguments addressed wholly to the situation in France, whereby he furnishes justification for the abolition of ancient debts, the public appropriation of feudal grants, the wiping out of hereditary privileges, and the eradication of monopolies. Late in September, with Polly, Patsy, Petit, and two servants, Jefferson leaves Paris for a six months' leave, unaware that the same day the United States Senate confirmed his nomination as Secretary of State. Four weeks later he lands in Norfolk, where he is greeted by the officials--and finds that politics and anti-federalism are far from inactive in Virginia.
