Download or read book Women in American Cartography written by Judith Tyner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although women have been involved in mapping throughout history, their story has largely been hidden. The standard histories of cartography have focused on men. A woman’s name is rarely found. In Women in American Cartography, Judith Tyner argues that women were not deliberately erased but overlooked because of the types of maps they made and the jobs they held.Tyner looks at over fifty women exemplars in American cartography and their maps. She looks at teachers who made school atlases in the early nineteenth century; at pictorial mapmakers and book illustrators who created popular maps; at women who pioneered social and persuasive mapping, promoting causes such as suffrage; at women travelers who recorded their trips and mapped unexplored places; at women whose maps helped win Word War II; at women academics who studied, taught, and wrote about cartographic theory at colleges and universities; and at women who worked in government agencies and commercial mapping companies. These are just a few of the stories of women in American cartography.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in association with the Royal Geographical Society, this authoritative Philip's Essential World Atlas presents the world in cartography of exceptional quality. The 144 pages of physical and political maps - fully revised and updated - have been selected to provide balanced coverage of the continents, while giving prominence to densely populated and economically or strategically important areas. Projections and scales have been chosen to maximize legibility and minimize distortion over the largest regions. Acclaimed by geographers everywhere, Philip's physical maps combine relief shading with layer-coloured contours to give a stunning visual impression of the Earth's surface, while charting physical features, settlements and communications with meticulous accuracy. Included also is a superb new 26-page 'Images of Earth' section, showing 25 of the world's most important cities and regions in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Americas in breath-taking satellite imagery. In addition, the atlas features a series of fascinating maps depicting our ocean seafloors in stunning detail. Completing the atlas, and with full latitude and longitude co-ordinates along with letter-figure grid references, the extensive index of over 64,000 names includes geographical features such as mountains, rivers, lakes and deserts, as well as provinces, towns and cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of one of the great pioneering women adventures of the 19th century. Intrepid journalist Nellie Bly raced through a ‘man’s world’ — alone and literally with just the clothes on her back — to beat the fictional record set by Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days. She won the race on 25 January 1890, covering 21,740 miles by ocean liner and train in 72 days, and became a global celebrity. Although best known for her record-breaking journey, even more importantly Nellie Bly pioneered investigative journalism and paved the way for women in the newsroom. Her undercover reporting, advocacy for women's rights, crusades for vulnerable children, campaigns against oppression and steadfast conviction that 'nothing is impossible' makes the world that she circled a better place. Adventurer, journalist and author, Rosemary J Brown, set off 125 years later to retrace Nellie Bly’s footsteps in an expedition registered with the Royal Geographical Society. Through her recreation of that epic global journey, she brings to life Nellie Bly’s remarkable achievements and shines a light on one of the world's greatest female adventurers and a forgotten heroine of history.

Book Synopsis The Great Global Puzzle Challenge with Google Earth by : Clive Gifford
Download or read book The Great Global Puzzle Challenge with Google Earth written by Clive Gifford and published by Carlton Publishing Group. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the many wonders of the world in this amazing illustrated tour of some of the most interesting places on Earth. Each spread focuses on one destination, and the amazingly intricate artwork gives readers a visual flavour of the place, with masses to look at and discover the more you look. There are links from one place to the next - historical, geographical, natural history or just simple proximity - for example, there is an ancient Egyptian obelisk in NY's central park, with two sister obelisks in Paris and London. Find the one in the Central Park using Google(TM) Earth co-ordinates and it gives you the clue to where you will be going next. The pyramids at the Louvre in Paris will whisk you off to the temples of Ancient Egypt, then find a connection from the Colosseum of Ancient Rome to the hot plains of Tanzania that team with wildlife, from flocks of flamingos to herds of wildebeest to prides of lions. The crater is actually a collapsed volcano; this knowledge then helps speed you to Mount Fuji and Tokyo. . . and so on. In each location you have to find a souvenir to take with you. You will also need to solve a puzzle with the help of Google(TM) Earth to collect co-ordinates for your final secret location - again on Google(TM) Earth. For instance, the puzzle tells you to visit the Statue of Liberty on Google(TM) Earth and to count the number of points on its crown. This number is one of the co-ordinates you need to find your final destination at the end of the book.
