Book excerpt: Seven gripping tales of murder, mystery and intrigue featuring Satyajit Rayýs inimitable super sleuth, Feluda Feludaýs Last Case collects seven cases which span the career of Pradosh Mitter, a.k.a. In some of the stories Feluda and Topshe are assisted by Lalmohan Babu, alias Jatayu (a bumbling writer of crime fiction), who adds a touch of humour to the gripping action and high drama.

Book Synopsis The Last Prince of Bengal by : Lyn Innes
Download or read book The Last Prince of Bengal written by Lyn Innes and published by Saqi Books. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nawab Nazim was born into one of India's most powerful royal families. Three times the size of Great Britain, his kingdom ranged from the soaring Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. However, the Nawab was seen as a threat by the British authorities, who forced him to abdicate in 1880 and permanently abolished his titles. The Nawab's change in fortune marked the end of an era in India and left his secret English family abandoned. The Last Prince of Bengal tells the true story of the Nawab Nazim and his family as they sought by turns to befriend, settle in and eventually escape Britain. From glamourous receptions with Queen Victoria to a scandalous Muslim marriage with an English chambermaid; and from Bengal tiger hunts to sheep farming in the harsh Australian outback, Lyn Innes recounts her ancestors' extraordinary journey from royalty to relative anonymity. This compelling account visits the extremes of British rule in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, exposing complex prejudices regarding race, class and gender. It is the intimate story of one family and their place in defining moments of recent Indian, British and Australian history. 'I was captivated and surprised by this bitter-sweet history as it twists and turns down three generations, through many astonishing changes of fame and fortune, from a glittering Bengal palace to an Australian sheep farm. Lovingly researched and meticulously told, The Last Prince of Bengal is notable for its candid revelations of British colonial attitudes and hypocrisies across two centuries. A rich, delightful and unexpectedly thought-provoking saga.' -- Richard Holmes Lyn Innes explores her ancestors' history in moving detail, capturing the tragic story of the dethroned princes of Bengal who had to make their lives in foreign lands, marked forever by the harsh legacy of Empire.'-- Shrabani Basu, author of Victoria and Abdul: The Extraordinary True Story of the Queen's Closest Confidant

Book Synopsis Critical Essays on English and Bengali Detective Fiction by : Debayan Deb Barman
Download or read book Critical Essays on English and Bengali Detective Fiction written by Debayan Deb Barman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Essays on English and Bengali Detective Fiction brings together three strains of detective fiction: British, American, and Bengal. The import of detective fiction from Britain has influenced generations of writers of Bengali detective fiction. In this anthology of critical essays by scholars on detective fiction, we have divided the contents into three groups. First, there are essays on classic British detective fiction, with essays on Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, P.D.James, Kate Atkinson, and Margery Allingham. The second section is on American hard-boiled fiction with essays on Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. The third section is on Bengali detective fiction with essays on Hemendra Kumar Roy, Saradindu Bandyopadhay and Satyajit Ray. Together, these essays bring three strains of detective fiction into conversation to show the gradual postcolonial attempt of Bengali detective fiction to outgrow colonial influences and create an original and organic tradition of regional and vernacular detective fiction.
Book Synopsis Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Feluda by : Anindita Dey
Download or read book Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Feluda written by Anindita Dey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Feluda: Negotiating the Center and the Periphery presents a postcolonial reading of Conan Doyle’s canonical detective texts—Sherlock Holmes adventures, and some lesser known detective texts written by two Bengali (Indian) writers—Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay (1899-1970), and Satyajit Ray (1921-1992). The book proposes that in a postcolonial reading situation, the representation of Holmes problematizes the act of reading and also the act and discourse of inquiry. The fact that the Holmes adventures contribute to the hegemonic culture of “Anglo/Eurocentrism” is seen as a reinforcement of racial superiority among the “colonized.” This book studies how literary texts function as a signifier of a particular national identity, and can indicate the cultural construct of a state. It contends that only those texts which cater to the standards of global hierarchy are considered canonical, and indigenous texts, however significant, remain as "Other" literature. The book highlights colonial and postcolonial discourse in the Bengali detective texts and examines, how far Holmes has been able to reinforce racial dominance over the Indian detectives Byomkesh Bakshi and Feluda.
