Paul Talling investigates how these rivers shaped the city - forming borough boundaries and transport networks, fashionable spas and stagnant slums - and how they all eventually gave way to railways, roads and sewers. Armed with his camera, he traces their routes and reveals their often overlooked remains: riverside pubs on the Old Kent Road, healing wells in King's Cross, 'stink pipes' in Hammersmith and gurgling gutters on streets across the city. Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Rivers uncovers the watery history of the city's most famous sights, bringing to life the very different London that lies beneath our feet.

This is the land of long-forgotten tube stations, burnt-out mansions and gently decaying factories. Welcome to DERELICT LONDON: a realm whose secrets are all around us, visible to anyone who cares to look . . . Paul Talling – our best-loved investigator of London’s underbelly – has spent over fifteen years uncovering the stories of this hidden world. Now, he brings together 100 of his favourite abandoned places from across the capital: many of them more magnificent, more beautiful and more evocative than you can imagine. Covering everything from the overgrown stands of Leyton Stadium to the windswept alleys of the Aylesbury Estate, DERELICT LONDON reveals a side of the city you never knew existed. It will change the way you see London. ______________________________ PRAISE FOR THE DERELICT LONDON PROJECT ‘Fascinating images showing some of London’s eeriest derelict sites show another side to the busy, built-up capital.’ Daily Mail ‘Talling has managed to show another side to the capital, one of abandoned buildings that somehow retain a sense of beauty.’ Metro ‘Excellent . . . As much as it is an inadvertent vision of how London might look after a catastrophe, DERELICT LONDON is valuable as a document of the one going on right in front of us.’ New Statesman ‘From the iconic empty shell of Battersea Power Station to the buried ‘ghost’ stations of the London Underground, the city is peppered with decaying buildings. Paul Talling knows these places better than anyone in the capital.’ Daily Express ‘[London has an] unusual (and deplorable) number of abandoned buildings. Paul Talling’s surprise bestseller, DERELICT LONDON, is their shabby Pevsner.’ Daily Telegraph ______________________________

Book Synopsis The Royal Arsenal Railways by : Mark Smithers
Download or read book The Royal Arsenal Railways written by Mark Smithers and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Smithers has written a number of definitive books and magazine features on the history of locomotive construction and the development of narrow gauge railways. This book looks at the history and development of railways at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich, which evolved from humble roots in the 1820s into three separate railway systems, serving the Gun Factory, Laboratory and Carriage Department. The three systems originally had their own fleet of locomotives and rolling stock and were constructed using three different track gauges: standard gauge, 2ft and 18in. The Arsenal and its railways played a major role in both world wars and continued to hold an important place in gun and propellant manufacture until the late 1950s, when the complex was gradually run down. The Royal Arsenal and its railways were finally closed in 1967, when the last train of material left the site. This book covers the history of the system from its beginnings through to its demise and also details the significant remains of a once mighty network.

Book excerpt: A history of the Gunners told through in-depth biographies of the team’s key players on and off the pitch, from its late 19th century beginnings to today. Arsenal: The Story of a Football Club in 101 Lives tells the history of the team through the biographies of key individuals associated with the club from its formation in the gas-lit days of Victorian Britain through to the present day. From David Danskin, the Scottish mechanical engineer and footballer who was the driving force behind the team raised at Dial Square, a workshop at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, to Arsene Wenger, the longest-serving and most successful manager in Arsenal’s history. The in-depth stories of the characters—players, managers, chairmen—here paint a fascinating picture of how the club—indeed, the game of football itself—has developed from workers playing for fun to today’s multi-million-pound business.

Book Synopsis Geordie Armstrong: On the Wing by : Dave Seager
Download or read book Geordie Armstrong: On the Wing written by Dave Seager and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George 'Geordie' Armstrong served Arsenal for 27 years as both a player and a coach, before being cruelly taken from his family and his club whilst coaching the Arsenal reserves at London Colney - he collapsed suddenly on the training pitch having suffered a brain haemorrhage in October 2000 - and never recovered. At the request of Geordie's daughter, Jill, Dave Seager has worked towards capturing the essence of George Armstrong: the player, the coach and the man. He has not chosen the conventional biography route, instead he tells the story of Geordie Armstrong with the assistance of those who knew him best - and the end product reads like a veritable who's who of Arsenal Football Club from the past 50 years. Seager successfully paints a remarkable picture - reliving stories and recollections of those who loved him; those who were fortunate to call him their friend; those who played alongside him; those who watched him play week in week out and those who were coached by him. There are also dozens of never before published action shots and pictures from George's own personal photographic collection to enjoy. The interview roll-call includes: Bob Wilson, Frank McLintock, Charlie George, Eddie Kelly, John Radford, George Graham, Liam Brady, George Cohen, Arsene Wenger, Dennis Bergkamp, Lee Dixon, David Dein, Gary Lewin, Vic Akers, Stewart Houston, Pat Rice, Martin Keown, Kevin Campbell, Frank Stapleton, Steve Burtenshaw, Ken Friar, Steve Sidwell, Perry Groves, Peter Simpson, Brendan Batson, Bob McNab and many more -
