It covers West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut and England. It was the B & O Railroad in Grafton, Taylor County, WV that brought our Phelps family to that state from Baltimore, MD. Actually, Phelps came to the western part of Virginia right before it became the state of West Virginia. I dedicate this book to the Phelps men in my family: My dad, Robert I Phelps, my brother, Sherman Cecil Phelps, my granddad, Walter Watkins Phelps II, my great granddad, George Phelps and my great-great granddad, Walter Watkins Phelps. I give special thanks to our heavenly Father, our Creator and His heavenly team and to both of my parents, Robert & Vernie (Shomo) Phelps.

This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1750 a young man boarded a boat traveling alone from France to America. He became friends with a family traveling to America from Germany. During this 6 month journey, he and the young lady of the family he befriended fell in love and married after their arrival to this new country. In France the Shomo name is called "Chaumontet," and Joseph Chaumontet Shomo married Anna Maria "Fricker" from Germany. He, this couple's sons, her brother and others fought in the Revolutionary War for our freedoms. This family first settled in Berks County, PA and attended church near the Reading Railroad. They started their own business. Many of their offspring moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia. From Virginia, some of this family moved to the part of Virginia which later became West Virginia, and many of their descendants fought in the Civil War and many other wars for our freedoms. The descendants who lived in Rowtown (Junior) and Belington in Barbour County, West Virginia were influential in becoming mayors, organizing banks, theaters, coal miner workers and some owned coal mines. Many of these family members were the "pillars of their communities." Some were teachers, postmasters, ministers, farmers, blacksmiths, business owners, home makers, carpenters. Many were members of the Knights of Pythias. Many raised large families. One descendant, Peggy Shomo Joyner wrote a book called "Ancestors and Descendants of Joseph Shomo (Shammo), Immigrant to Pennsylvania, 1750." This book had 439 pages, was published by Gateway Press in 1983, original from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. This book is now out of print. All of the information in this book is a big help to those of us who want to learn more about our Shomo family. Now Stella (Phelps) Forinash has written this 414 page book called "Roots of a Family from West Virginia the "Shomo" Family and is working on another book called "Shomo Family Book 2 - From France and Germany to the USA." Stella was born in Taylor County, WV and lived in Philippi, Barbour County, WV from 1952-1963. Stella is the daughter of Robert I and Vernie B (Shomo) Phelps and the granddaughter of Eugene and Stella (Cross) Shomo. These books are naming the thousands of Shomo descendants from West Virginia and other states with some photos and obituaries which various family members have shared with the public. It is just another tool in our journey to learn more about our family. Stella and her husband, Ken visited Reading, PA in Berks County and New Market, VA in Shenandoah County in 2017. In 2018 Stella fell and broke bones in her left hand while typing and writing this book and was wearing a cast on her left arm. The actual credit for these books go to all of the Shomo descendants who share photos and family information in person, in family Bibles, on Ancestry, Find a Grave, on the Internet, in books, on Facebook as well as to our country's US Federal census records, military records, passenger and Immigration Lists Index from 1500s to 1900s, tax records, church records, public school records, wills, state and county court records, obituaries, etc. Modern DNA is now proving even more about our ancestry. All credit goes to our Creator and His team.

Book excerpt: "Making the "America of Art" demonstrates that beginning in the 1850s, women writers challenged the terms of the Scottish Common Sense philosophy, which had made artistic endeavors acceptable in the new Republic by subordinating aesthetic motivation to moral and educational goals. Harriet Beecher Stowe and Augusta Jane Evans drew on Ruskin to argue for the creation of a religiously based national aesthetic. In the postbellum years Louisa May Alcott, Rebecca Harding Davis, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and Constance Fenimore Woolson continued the process in a series of writings that revolved around three central areas of concern: the place of the popular in the realm of high art; the role of the genius; and the legacy of the Civil War." "Sofer significantly revises the history of 19th-century American women's authorship by detailing the gradual process that produced women writers wholly identified with literary high culture at the century's end."--BOOK JACKET. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the late colonial period and the Civil War, the countryside of the American northeast was largely transformed. Rural New England changed from a society of independent farmers relatively isolated from international markets into a capitalist economy closely linked to the national market, an economy in which much farming and manufacturing output was produced by wage labor. Using the Connecticut Valley as an example, The Roots of Rural Capitalism demonstrates how this important change came about. Christopher Clark joins the active debate on the "transition to capitalism" with a fresh interpretation that integrates the insights of previous studies with the results of his detailed research. Largely rejecting the assumption of recent scholars that economic change can be explained principally in terms of markets, he constructs a broader social history of the rural economy and traces the complex interactions of social structure, household strategies, gender relations, and cultural values that propelled the countryside from one economic system to another. Above all, he shows that people of rural Massachusetts were not passive victims of changes forced upon them, but actively created a new economic world as they tried to secure their livelihoods under changing demographic and economic circumstances. The emergence of rural capitalism, Clark maintains, was not the result of a single "transition"; rather, it was an accretion of new institutions and practices that occurred over two generations, and in two broad chronological phases. It is his singular contribution to demonstrate the coexistence of a family-based household economy (persisting well into the nineteenth century) and the market-oriented system of production and exchange that is generally held to have emerged full-blown by the eighteenth century. He is adept at describing the clash of values sustaining both economies, and the ways in which the rural household-based economy, through a process he calls "involution," ultimately gave way to a new order. His analysis of the distinctive role of rural women in this transition constitutes a strong new element in the study of gender as a factor in the economic, social, and cultural shifts of the period. Sophisticated in argument and engaging in presentation, this book will be recognized as a major contribution to the history of capitalism and society in nineteenth-century America.
