Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Old New England Churches Meeting-houses and ministers Whose names and aspects are more or less familiar to the general reader. If ministers' sons and daughters also have a place here it is because they were bound to be in such a work. And if once or twice space is given to churches and preachers who can not lay claim to even the one hundred and fifty years of life which passes in this country for antiquity, it is because they seemed to me really to' belong in the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old New England Churches and Their Children In telling the story of New England Churches, I have been greatly assisted by the kind cooperation of many New England people: public-spirited citizens and pastors of churches; and by reference to pamphlets, books of general history, ecclesiastical histories, town records, old sermons, and the like. Especial thanks are due the trustees, librarians and to the least of the staff of the Boston Public Library. I wish eagerly to acknowledge the hospitality of the trustees and here to thank the librarians for their efficient help in placing well classified and helpful material in my hands. I wish to thank the attendants for their cheerful comings and goings, their fetchings and carryings in the interest of this work, and to express the pleasure I have felt in observing how indiscriminately willing they are to serve all those who work within that rare library's gates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a New England Church and People Chestnut Street, where the tall graceful Spire, one hundred and sixty-five feet in height, was seen against the delicate tracery of the top branches of the old elms, some of which had probably stood there as long as the church. On both sides of the street are some of the finest of the colonial houses for which Salem has been famous. It is near the centre of the city, very accessible, but very quiet, a block away from cars of all sorts. I remember that many years ago a gentle man of the neighborhood spent two years abroad and on his return said, that he had seen nothing in Europe that he liked better than Dr. Emerson's steeple. Spoken of in that way during the life of the old clergyman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of the New England Churches, Vol. 1 A few words will sufficiently explain to the reader of this book the design of the author. The history of Protestant Christianity in the United States Of America is the history, not of a national church, but Of voluntary churches. I have attempted to show how it began, and to trace the origin and development of the idea which generated the churches Of New England. It is hardly necessary to say that the Baptist churches - a name which, in the United States, comprehends more churches than any other save oneu - are constituted on the same platform Of polity with the church which came in the May ower. I have had no occasion to speak of them or of their in uence in giving character to our American civilization; inasmuch as the history Of churches bearing that name, on this side of the Atlantic, begins later than the latest date in the volume now submitted to the public. It has been claimed for those churches that, from the age of the Reformation onward, they have been always fore most and always consistent in maintaining the doctrine Of religious liberty. Let me not be understood as calling in question their right to so great an honor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Establishment of the Church in New England The object contemplated in this small volume of Sketches, was, to give as succinct an account as possible of the introduction of our Holy Religion, and the foundation of its early churches, to assist, at least partially, the future historian, who will write of the several Dioceses, of which there are already five, where a few years ago there was but one, embracing the six New England States. To the honor and glory of God, and to the spiritual advantage of thousands, as already seen, has been the erection of these Dioceses, in which so many churches, academies, convents, schools, confraternities, and other religious, literary, and benevolent Institutions have been introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church History of New England, From 1620 to 1804: Containing a View of the Principles and Practice, Declensions and Revivals, Oppression and Liberty of the Churches, and a Chronological Table Few Of his favoured brethren Of this generation, are adequately impressed with a sense Of their indebtedness to the labours Of this departed champion Of their cause. He was unquestionably one Of the most useful ministers that has ever appeared among the American Baptists. For fifty years, he was a laborious servant Of their churches; and for more than half this period, he diligently devoted what time he could spare from professional du ties, to historical researches. The vast fund Of materials which he thus accumulated, must have sunk into entire Oblivion, had it not been for his unwearied care. As a preacher he was entirely evangelical: pungency, pathos and power, characterized many of his discourses, which though unornamented with rhetorical language, were richly stored with scriptural truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promises of Alice: The Romance of a New England Parsonage William Alden had been called to the West Meadows church just as he completed his course in the theological school. The very day the call came, he proposed seeing his future assured to a pretty cousin, Mary Alden, who, to his astonish ment, refused him emphatically. She said she wasn't good, enough to be a minister's wife, and she didn't like the idea, anyhow. I want to be free to talk in my own way. If I should say 'darn it' all the Old maids in your church would hold up their hands! No, William; I'm fond of you, but I won't marry a parson! Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Old New England the Romance of a Colonial Fireside The stories that were told on old red settles by chimney fires in old New England days had a peculiar spirit and coloring. Quaint as many of them were, they carried deep spiritual meanings. Reward or retribution was somehow associated with the queer tale of the country grocery store, the ordinary, the husking party, or of the neighborhood or town. I used to hear many of these tales when a boy in the old home farm in the Pokanoket country on the Mount Hope and Narragansett Bays. They have always haunted me at such times as my mind wandered back to the past, and I have liked to reproduce them in my own way for the magazines and papers. Of the stories in this volume, A Hallowe'en Reformation (Captain Tuttle and the Miracle Clock) and A Regular Old-fashioned Thanksgiving (The Haunted Oven) appeared in the Century Magazine, and are used here by permission of the Century Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endura, or Three Generations: A New England Romance The author conceived the idea of making a rascal, unwittingly, furnish the sin ews of war, with the full hope and expectation of enjoying the fortune, as the result which was accomplished, according to the following story, would never have been reached if a great many heirs had been interested and consulted. It was a great stake for a gambler to play for, and, had not Providence interfered, he might have won. Such an accident as the friend of the family's discovering the fraud, could easily have happened. But it was a great question with the author, as to whether the lawyers who had the case in charge, having received retaining fees and large amounts of money from time to time, could honorably abandon his interests, even though the conviction was forced upon them that he was an impostor. The author consulted a number of able attorneys upon the subject, whose opinions differed greatly. And there appeared to be no better way out of the dilemma than that the impostor, himself, should be put out of the way; and nothing was more natural than that his accomplice should be the one to make way with him, when said accomplice became convinced that he had been robbed and fooled by the cunning rascal.
