Slotnick show in this comprehensive survey, the history of Alaska’s peoples and the development of its economy have matched the diversity of its land- and seascapes. Alaska: A History begins by examining the region’s geography and the Native peoples who inhabited it for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The Russians claimed northern North America by right of discovery in 1741. During their occupation of “Russian America” the region was little more than an outpost for fur hunters and traders. When the czar sold the territory to the United States in 1867, nobody knew what to do with “Seward’s Folly.” Mainland America paid little attention to the new acquisition until a rush of gold seekers flooded into the Yukon Territory. In 1906 Congress granted Alaska Territory a voteless delegate and in 1912 gave it a territorial legislature. Not until 1959, however, was Alaska’s long-sought goal of statehood realized. During World War II, Alaska’s place along the great circle route from the United States to Asia firmly established its military importance, which was underscored during the Cold War. The developing military garrison brought federal money and many new residents. Then the discovery of huge oil and natural-gas deposits gave a measure of economic security to the state. Alaska: A History provides a full chronological survey of the region’s and state’s history, including the precedent-setting Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, which compensated Native Americans for their losses; the effect of the oil industry and the trans-Alaska pipeline on the economy; the Exxon Valdez oil spill; and Alaska politics through the early 2000s.

Benicia's deep water harbor attracted Pacific Mail and Steamship Company, the first major California industry, the famous Matthew Turner shipyards, tanneries, and the Central Pacific Railroad, which made Benicia its transcontinental terminus. State legislators made the town their third state capital in 1853. That oldest surviving capitol building still stands along with many historic buildings, including the stately structures of a U.S. military base that began with the Benicia Barracks in 1849 and continued to serve until 1964.

There was a great deal of skepticism about this affair throughout much of 19th century California; after all, Concha wanted to escape California, yet Nikolai wanted to plant the Tsar's flag here. Concha wished to see the world's great cities and institutions while Nikolai saw California as a Garden of Eden that could supplement Russia's colony in Alaska. The arc of this story also follows a present-day professor who is seeking answers to this unresolved scandal. In old California Mission days, there was little news of the outside world, and boredom was an aching reminder of isolation. The one joyous pastime was their fandangos with lively dancing to break the monotony. Two hundred years later the professor finds archival materials containing musical notations written by a mysterious character, as well as old documents and notes that shed new light on this debated romance of long ago and answers the question; did they truly love one another? This is not a romantic novel per se, but a story of a devoted but unfulfilled love and a life set in difficult times. The hardships and uncertainty faced by Concepcion and Nikolai will resonate with the reader.

Historically the role of the armed forces in Alaska has been large and diverse. Alaska was one of the two principal territorial purchases made by the United States between 1803 and 1867 adding nearly 1.5 million square miles to America’s national domain. They fell in love and intended to marry. Because they were of different faiths, permission to marry had to be granted by Rome and by the Russian Orthodox Church. Nikolai returned to St. Petersburg to seek permission. On the jounrey, he fell from his horse and died in Siberia in 1807. Concepcion rejected many other suitors and dedicated her life to charitable work. She entered the cominican order at Santa Catalina Convent in Monterey, California. The convent moved to Benicia in 1854. Concepcion died in the convent in 1857 and is buried in St. Dominic's Cemetery in Benicia.
