Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question He took from an envelope a little Wafer, like those used in the Catholic Church, remarking that the communicant was not allowed to touch the wine cup, this being retained by the priest, who after the service generally got drunk on what was left. Romanists say that these wafers are the real Christ - these little bits of cracker, which are easily broken, that become lost, that fall in the mud, that are eaten by rats. If, as is claimed, each one of these wafers is Jesus Christ, then there are a hundred thousand Jesus Christs all over the known universe. There is no power ih them, shouted the impassioned doctor, as he came to the edge of the platform and bent his body until his head almost touched his knees. If there were, I could not say these things against them. To show you it has no power, I will roll it over and break it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools The address upon The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, which has the first place in the following pages, was delivered in connection with the now somewhat famous text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888, and was published at that time in pamphlet form. The address upon the question, Has the Parochial School Proper Place in America? Was given before the National Educational Association, at Nashville, in July last. The writer declined the invitations for its publication at the time, as it was his desire to expand and strengthen that portion of the address devoted to the subject of moral training in the public schools. The leisure for this revision has never come, and the address is given here almost untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Question: Catholics and Education The problem of arranging our free education in harmony with the true spirit of American institutions has long occupied the attention of all patriotic and thoughtful citizens of this Republic. The political tactics of the day have brought forward this question into great prominence. The desire to understand the position of Catholics on this subject is widespread, and there is a demand among Catholics themselves for more abundant information. These considerations have induced the Editor of The Catholic World to reprint the following series of articles from the pages of that magazine. In presenting them to the public, he is led to express his conviction of their value, and to call attention to the facts upon which this estimate is based. Most of these articles were written before the present political agitation arose. They have therefore the merit of being free from all partisan bias. They are the productions of various writers from all quarters of the country. As a whole, the collection will be found free from any local prejudice. They are, furthermore, the deliberate utterances of the most intelligent Catholic thinkers; they will be found to contain accurate information and mature thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Catholics and the Roman Question The following pages are an expansion Of an article published by me on the same subject in the American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1892. Certain qualified judges, whose desire was for me a command, having urged me to publish it separately, I felt it my duty to somewhat enlarge its scope and reinforce its argument. It is unnecessary to say that I have by no means either the intention or the pretension of exhausting such a subject in so few pages. I have proposed to myself primarily to Show clearly and frankly the Catholic point of View from which the Roman question should be regarded, indicating the principal considerations which should be taken into account in a true conception and solution of it, and thus to disengage it from those prejudices and ambiguities with which the best intentioned people sometimes surround it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem and the Catholic School One of the outstanding problems in American rural life today is to be found in the decline of the rural church. Surveys conducted in recent years point to this defect as one of the cancers that are eating the Vitals out of American public life. Religion must enter into the hearts of the people or evil looms up for the future. It is, indeed, only too true that the country church, both in Catholic and non-catholic circles, is not fulfilling the mission for which it was intended. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Educational Problem: The Jewish Population and the Protestant Schools The second important step in educational matters was taken in 1824, when the Fabrique act was passed authorizing each Roman Catholic parish to devote one quarter of its annual Church revenue to the support of a school for the parish. Under these two acts temporary provision was made for elementary education in a large number of the English and French sections of the Province during the first quarter of the past century. The first public elementary school act for the Province was passed in the year 1829. This act provided that five trustees, elected in each parish or township, should have the management of schools in that district. The act provided for a limited number of schools and a grant of 20 was paid by the Government to each teacher on condition that the school was in operation at least 90 days, and had an average attendance of 20 pupils. These schools were for the rural districts, they were voluntary, free, and without taxation. Although the schools established under this act took their colour as to language and religious teaching, from the communities which maintained them, they were common schools, recognising no religious distinction in the community. As these schools were supported by the Government and the grants were paid through the local member of the Legislature, the people in the French districts of the Province regarded this system as a political propaganda for the destruction of their language and religion. The schools, therefore, under this act met with only a moderate measure of success. About 1300 schools, however, were established under the provision of this act with an attendance of about 36,000 pupils. They were in the possession Of the Church from the earliest days, and their application antedates by centuries the formulation Of theories that are now widely accepted as the psychological basis Of education. It is indeed interesting to note that as a clearer insight is Obtained into the activity and development Of the mind, the principles which the Papacy has followed in its teach ing are seen to be the best sort Of applied psychology. On the other hand, the rejection of these principles by many who nevertheless desire that Christianity should prevail, explains in some measure the difficulties pre sented by the question Of religious and moral instruo tion. At all events, it has been claimed that the teaching Of religion must be kept apart from the teaching of other subjects on the ground that its methods are incompatible with those that are employed in the regular work of the school; and it is worth while inquiring whether the Church in her long experience has not made use of meth ods that are free from any such Objection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Schools: A Discourse on the Modifications Demanded by the Roman Catholics; Delivered in the North Church, Hartford, on the Day of the Late Fast, March 25, 1853 Lev. 24:22. Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the strangers, as for one of tour own country: for I Am the Lord Your God. It is my very uncommon privilege and pleasure to speak to you, for once, from a text already fulfilled, and more than fulfilled in the observance. For we, as a people, or nation, have not only abstained from passing laws that are unequal, or hard upon strangers, which is what the rule of the text forbids, but we have invited them to become fellow-citizens with us in our privileges, and bestowed upon them all the rights and immunities of citizens. We have said to the strangers from Germany, France, Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, and indeed of every land, "Come and be Americans with us, you and your children; and whatsoever right or benefit we have, in our free institutions and our vast and fertile domain, shall be yours." Thus invited, thus admitted to an equal footing with us, they are not content, but are just now returning our generosity by insisting that we must excuse them and their children from being wholly arid properly American. They will not have one law for us and for themselves, but they demand immunities that are peculiar to themselves, and before unheard of by us; or else that we wholly give up institutions for their sake that are the dearest privileges of our birthright.
