This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholic and Protestant Bibles Compared: The Gould Prize Essays The great difference between the versions is the presence in the Roman Catholic Bible of the Apoc rypha. The collection of books so named is rejected by Protestants as uncanonical. The American Re vised Version does not even allude to the existence of the Apocrypha. Compared with this difference between the two versions all other differences are insignificant. Whatever may be the merits or the defects of expression in either, and however impor tant may be the correction of textual errors by devout and enlightened scholarship, both versions contain the same and the complete message of the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholicism, or the Doctrines of the Church of Rome Briefly Examined in the Light of Scripture The writer, in citing texts of Scripture, has noted the fact that some passages of our Authorized Version have been modified in the Revised Version of the English Bible. The Douay Version, the English trans lation of the Latin Vulgate accredited by Roman Catholic authorities, has been always borne in mind, and in proof passages where any real difference exists notice has been called to its renderings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Protestant's Appeal to the Douay Bible, and Other Roman Catholic Standards, in Support of the Doctrines of the Reformation Protestants need instruction as to the Scriptural ground upon which rest the doctrines of the Reformation. Protestants are too ready to receive the unwarranted assertion made by the defenders of Romanism, that antiquity is altogether on the side of the Papacy. Protestants are not sufficiently aware that it is impossible to sustain the peculiar dogmas of of the Roman Catholic Church, by an appeal even to her own versions of the Bible. Protestants, moreover, entertain a too lenient view of the principles and practices of Roman Catholicism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Catholic Church This sublime purpose of Christ has always been the main object pursued by the Church. It is the highest aspect and aim of Christianity. But Christianity has two aspects: one, partially described above, is all divine, and looking to God; contemplating man, not in his temporal existence, but in the eternal state of being. This is the direct object of the existence of the Church. But it may be easily shown that the Church, which appears to have been intended exclusively for our happiness in a future life, is also to serve for the furtherance and maintenance of our well-being here below. Download or read book The New Version (Classic Reprint) written by George Chainey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Version To their unsophisticated minds, this busi ness is seen in a far different light than by ambitious theologians desirous of increasing their income and glory by a place on the translators' staff. Hitherto, they have really believed the Bible from the first verse in Genesis to the last in Revelations. They supposed that God was the author. The idea that he had left the proof-reading to fallible man had never entered their heads. But now every one is familiar with the fact that there are thousands of different read ings that can only be settled by majority vote. They cannot but reflect that, if these men can change it today, other men may do so again to-morrow. On finding what were to them some of the sublime passages left out, they will naturally ask themselves, If man composed these, why may he not lie the author of it all? The Bible in many a house, regarded in the light of a fetich, will lose much of its sacred character when the revealing light of the new version falls on it. This new version will also set thousands of people to reading the Bible. The reason why many think so much of this book is because they never read it. They have imagined that all the good, true, and beautiful things the ministers find in it are really there. By reading it for themselves, they will discover the deception. I think that, if any one would read the Bible for the purpose of deciding the ques tion of its divinity, they would find a ver dict against it long before reaching the New Testament. The Catholic Church obeys the law of self-preservation by withholding the Bible from the laity. The Pope knows better than to countenance a new version. The friends of humanity can congratulate them selves that Protestantism likes the taste of the poison that will destroy it. Book Synopsis Fifty Years in the Church of Rome (Classic Reprint) by : Father Chiniquy
Download or read book Fifty Years in the Church of Rome (Classic Reprint) written by Father Chiniquy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a book written by Father Charles Chiniquy. Chiniquy was a catholic priest born in Quebec, Canada and this book, his autobiography, is one of the best selling books in Canadian history. Chiniquy's book tells the story of the author's involvement in the Catholic Church, beginning with scenes of a little boy memorizing passages from the Bible. Chiniquy so loved the words of Jesus that he dedicated his life to the scriptures and became a Catholic priest. While serving as a priest, Chiniquy grew increasingly disillusioned with the institution of Catholicism and disgusted with many of the other men that served as priests. Chiniquy tells tales of the alcoholism, womanizing, and abuse that was common amongst other priests. The book discusses Chiniquy's split with Catholicism, excommunication from the church, and eventual rebirth as a Presbyterian pastor. The book also details Chiniquy's relationship with a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln, and the author's hypothesis that the Jesuits were responsible for his assassination. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a fascinating account of life in the Catholic church. A controversial book since the day it was published, Chiniquy's work is not an unfair or biased account of Catholicism. It is clear that the author still holds Catholicism in high regard, however was simply unable to overlook the misdoings of other religious men within the Church. This book holds historical significance, as it brought to light many controversies that still dog the Catholic Church many years later. Readers interested in Catholicism and the religious path of a former priest will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Touching and ripe with emotion, Chiniquy's work was a sensation upon its original publication and remains a highly important work to this day. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is highly recommended.
