Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Roll-Call (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This ebook follows the life of the young Clayhanger's stepson, George. George Edwin Cannon - he soon drops the surname Clayhanger, given to him upon his mother's marriage - becomes an architect, and represents what his stepfather Edwin Clayhanger wished to become. The characters of Edwin and Hilda are not developed further in this book: Edwin - now elevated to Alderman - appears only briefly. The central character displays an unattractive arrogance because of the wealth behind him. In an early chapter, he thinks about adding electric light to his London dwelling, and decides that he - or rather, his stepfather - can well afford it. Bennett seems to have felt that the children of the successful bourgeoisie, unless their excesses are suppressed as Edwin's were, will become spoilt. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English journalist, novelist, and writer. After working as a rent collector and solicitor's clerk, Bennett won a writing contest which convinced him to become a journalist. He later turned to the writing of novels, including his most famous Clayhanger and Anna of the five towns.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Complete Rougon-Macquart Cycle (All 20 Unabridged Novels in one volume)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Les Rougon-Macquart is the collective title given to a cycle of twenty novels by French writer Émile Zola. Subtitled Histoire naturelle et sociale d'une famille sous le Second Empire (Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire), it follows the life of a fictional family living during the Second French Empire (1852–1870) and is an example of French naturalism. Table of Contents: 1.La Fortune des Rougon (1871) 2.La Curée (1871-2) 3.Le Ventre de Paris (1873) 4.La Conquête de Plassans (1874) 5.La Faute de l'Abbé Mouret (1875) 6.Son Excellence Eugène Rougon (1876) 7.L'Assommoir (1877) 8.Une Page d'amour (1878) 9.Nana (1880) 10.Pot-Bouille (1882) 11.Au Bonheur des Dames (1883) 12.La Joie de vivre (1884) 13.Germinal (1885) 14.L'Œuvre (1886) 15.La Terre (1887) 16.Le Rêve (1888) 17.La Bête humaine (1890) 18.L'Argent (1891) 19.La Débâcle (1892) 20.Le Docteur Pascal (1893) The series began with La Fortune des Rougon (The Fortune of the Rougons), which introduces the Rougons and the Macquarts. Zola examines the impact of environment by varying the social, economic, and professional milieu in which each novel takes place. La Curée (The Kill) explores the land speculation and financial dealings that accompanied the renovation of Paris during the Second Empire. Le Ventre de Paris (Savage Paris; also translated as The Fat and the Thin) examines the structure of the Halles, the vast central marketplace of Paris. Son Excellence Eugène Rougon (His Excellency Eugène Rougon) traces the machinations and maneuverings of cabinet officials in Napoleon III’s government. L’Assommoir ( Drunkard) shows the effects of alcoholism in a working-class neighbourhood by focusing on the rise and decline of a laundress, Gervaise Macquart. Nana follows the life of Gervaise’s daughter as her economic circumstances and hereditary penchants lead her to a career as an actress, then a courtesan. Au Bonheur des dames (Ladies’ Delight) depicts the mechanisms of a new economic entity, the department store, and its impact on smaller merchants. Germinal depicts life in a mining community by highlighting relations between the bourgeoisie and the working class. A quite different work, L’Oeuvre (The Masterpiece), explores the milieu of the art world and the relationships among the arts through an examination of the friendship between an Impressionist painter, Claude Lantier, and a naturalist novelist, Pierre Sandoz. In La Terre (Earth) Zola depicts what he considered to be the sordid lust for land among the French peasantry. In La Bête humaine (The Human Beast) he analyzes the hereditary urge to kill that haunts the Lantier branch of the family. La Débâcle (The Debacle) traces both the defeat of the French army by the Germans at the Battle of Sedan in 1870 and the anarchist uprising of the Paris Commune. Finally, in Le Docteur Pascal (Doctor Pascal) he uses the main character, the doctor Pascal Rougon, armed with a genealogical tree of the Rougon-Macquart family published with the novel, to expound the theories of heredity underlying the entire series. Émile Zola (1840 – 1902), French novelist, critic, and political activist who was the most prominent French novelist of the late 19th century. He was noted for his theories of naturalism, which underlie his monumental 20-novel series Les Rougon-Macquart, and for his intervention in the Dreyfus Affair through his famous open letter, “J’accuse.”

This early work by Sherwood Anderson was originally published in 1917. Marching Men is the story of Norman "Beaut" McGregor, a young man discontented with the powerlessness and lack of personal ambition among the miners of his hometown. After moving to Chicago he discovers his purpose is to empower workers by having them march in unison. Major themes of the novel include the organization of laborers, eradication of disorder, and the role of the exceptional man in society. The latter theme led post-World War II critics to compare Anderson's militaristic approach to homosocial order and the fascists of the War's Axis powers. Sherwood Anderson (1876 – 1941) was an American novelist and short story writer, known for subjective and self-revealing works. Anderson published several short story collections, novels, memoirs, books of essays, and a book of poetry.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Mint (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Mint concerns the period following the First World War when Lawrence decided to disappear from public view. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name, becoming 352087 Aircraftman Ross. The book is a closely observed autobiographical account of his experiences in the RAF. He worked from a notebook that he kept while enlisted, writing of the daily lives of enlisted men and his desire to be a part of something larger than himself: the Royal Air Force. The book covers his initial training at RAF Uxbridge in 1922 and a part of his service at RAF Cranwell, 1925-26. The book's title likens the R.A.F. training to a coin factory, with the men as 'The Raw Material' and life in the training camp as being 'In the Mill' that stamps the coins out of the blank metal. Lawrence appears to have wanted to have his past life and fame obliterated, when he wrote "The Air Force is not a man-crushing humiliating slavery, all its days. There is sun & decent treatment, and a very real measure of happiness, to those who do not look forward or back." Lawrence stated that the book should not be published until after his death; in note by his brother, A. W. Lawrence, who edited the text for publication, a letter from T. E. Lawrence to E. M. Forster is summarized "he felt unable to publish the book because of 'the horror the fellows with me in the force would feel at my giving them away... Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was a British archaeologist, military officer, and diplomat. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916-18. Throughout his life, Lawrence was a prolific writer.

Book excerpt: Following his acclaimed Guide Through Balthasar's Aesthetics, Aidan Nichols summarizes and illuminates the five volume series Theo-Drama, which develops the heart of Balthasar's theological theory - his exploration of the Good and of the dramatic interplay of finite and infinite freedom. Theo-Drama builds upon the earlier achievement of The Glory of the Lord and transcends it, opening up new horizons for theological and cultural reflection in the twenty-first century. Aidan Nichols' succinct commentary enables the reader to grasp the main themes of one of the most important theological works in several generations. Introduction>

Book excerpt: Sparks fly between two teens as they grapple with grief, love, and the future in this unforgettable debut novel sure to entice fans of Jandy Nelson and Jennifer E. Smith Eighteen-year-old Amelia Griffin is obsessed with the famous Orman Chronicles, written by the young and reclusive prodigy N. E. Endsley. They’re the books that brought her and her best friend Jenna together after Amelia’s father left and her family imploded. So when Amelia and Jenna get the opportunity to attend a book festival with Endsley in attendance, Amelia is ecstatic. It’s the perfect way to start off their last summer before college. In a heartbeat, everything goes horribly wrong. When Jenna gets a chance to meet the author and Amelia doesn’t, the two have a blowout fight like they’ve never experienced. And before Amelia has a chance to mend things, Jenna is killed in a freak car accident. Grief-stricken, and without her best friend to guide her, Amelia questions everything she had planned for the future. When a mysterious, rare edition of the Orman Chronicles arrives, Amelia is convinced that it somehow came from Jenna. Tracking the book to an obscure but enchanting bookstore in Michigan, Amelia is shocked to find herself face-to-face with the enigmatic and handsome N. E. Endsley himself, the reason for Amelia’s and Jenna’s fight and perhaps the clue to what Jenna wanted to tell her all along. Ashley Schumacher's devastating and beautiful debut, Amelia Unabridged, is about finding hope and strength within yourself, and maybe, just maybe, falling in love while you do it.
